Nintendo Wii: Wii MotionPlus Won’t Be Backwards Compatible With Older Titles

Nintendo have clarified to gaming press that its forthcoming Wii MotionPlus won’t be backwards compatible with older games.

The device sadly won’t allow you to revisit older games for a more precise and intricate play session, rather it’ll only work on new titles that have been developed from the ground up to work with the peripheral. Software updates could be issued when connected to Wii Connect 24 to allow future backwards compatibility, but nothing of this nature has been mentioned.

  1. This one seemed obvious to me. Who was confused about this? Games wouldn’t have new functions unless they had new programming inserted.

  2. It’s just been officially clarified for those who were unsure, hence the reason I posted it : ) I for one wouldn’t lament a software update for the original Wii Sports with incorporated Wii MotionPlus controls though…

  4. yea, but can you imagine the size of the update? The update would account for the entire game. Pretty big update. I can’t see them doing this for free, or in one convenient download.
