Nintendo Wii: Nintendo Wii Officially Outsells Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Nintendo have officially confirmed that the Wii has outsold the NES, making it “the best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time.”

“Family Computer System, called Nintendo Entertainment System or NES in short in overseas markets, had sold 61.91 million units, which was the largest unit sales figure for any Nintendo home videogame consoles.

The cumulative sales of Wii hardware from Nintendo to our distributors and retail customers reached 67.45 million units as of the end of December 2009. It has replaced NES to become the best selling Nintendo home videogame console of all time.

Among handheld hardware, GameBoy series have sold through 118.69 million units in total since the launch, which was the largest unit sales figure among all Nintendo’s hardware products.

As of the end of December 2009, when Wii marked the record LTD sales as the number one selling Nintendo home console, the life-to-date shipments of Nintendo DS series reached 125.13 million units, which has now become largest sales figure among all of the Nintendo’s videogame hardware.

Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone.”

Nintendo: Nintendo President Turned Down Project Natal

According to reliable online gaming publication, CVG, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata turned down the motion sensing device that became Project Natal due to the initial price tag in late 2007.

Despite being impressed with the prototype, Iwata was reportedly unsold on it as a peripheral for Wii – leaving the door open for Microsoft to snap up the technology and its creator a year later.

“Iwata-San only ever invests in something he can guarantee will work for a Nintendo audience,” the exec told us.

“3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition – but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay.”

“Honestly – I’ve heard Iwata describe the prototype he saw at length, and it’s definitely Natal.”

“What we witnessed at E3 was smaller and the facial reading stuff had improved, but it’s the same technology. We remain unconvinced Natal will deliver on the more sophisticated elements of what Microsoft is promising at the price they’re aiming for.”

Nintendo Wii: Red Steel 2 Pushed Teen Rating To The Limits

According to the Entertainment Software Rating Board Ubisoft’s eagerly awaited Red Steel 2 has pushed the Teen rating  to the limits.

“During the course of the game, a female character with exaggerated-size breasts wears a low-cut shirt that exposes deep cleavage; the character’s breasts jiggle slightly during cutscenes (there are no comparable physics applied to male characters). The expletives “bada*s,” “punk-a*s,” and “dammit” can be heard in the dialogue.”

“Overall, the game’s highly stylized cell-shaded graphics blunt the sense of realism, increasing the fantastical nature of battle sequences; in some ways, the graphic-novel art style (skinned with hand-drawn-like textures) lessens the impact of the violence—though the game is still considered a high-end Teen.”
