Nintendo 3DS: My Nintendo 3DS UK Review Unit Impressions

As many of you know I was invited in January to attend the Nintendo 3DS conference in Amsterdam to test out the 3D device but sadly I was unable to make it. I felt left out that I hadn’t been able to experience what other people cited as an truly awe inspiring device. A device that relegates the need for 3D glasses on a hand-held games console.

Thankfully today was the day when I was able to witness the machine with my own eyes and find out just how impressive the 3D aspect of the device actually is. Nothing could quite prepare me for turning on the machine and viewing the initial 3D logo that popped out at me. The sense of depth was amazing and this was only starting up the machine for calibration.

Whilst I was setting up the device as prompted I couldn’t help but show members of my family just how impressive and immersed you become with the 3D. The entire 3DS menu has been developed in eye popping 3D so the icons and words literally jump out at you. It’s even more impressive if you switch back to 2D and then to 3D to just grasp how extraordinary the 3D actually is.

Once I’d become familiar with the menu I became completely engrossed in the Augmented Reality games that come pre-installed with the system. You literally place a flat yellow card on a surface and point your Nintendo 3DS at the said card. The card is then transformed into a three dimensional object with which you can shoot at or interact with. Mind-blowing stuff.

Another game that was pre-installed on the Nintendo 3DS is a game called Face Raiders.  This game prompts you to take a photo of someone’s face it then turns that face into a 3D object. Your 3D nemesis starts flying around your room and you have to use the 3DS’ camera to find them and shoot them. Perfect family fun and a game that I’ll be playing for a long while.

If you’re on the fence about purchasing a Nintendo 3DS then I highly recommend that you find a demo station in your area and test the device for yourself. It truly is as impressive as everyone has said it is. The fun factor is immensely high and if Nintendo keep pumping out quality software for the device it’s going to be an enormous hit.

  1. I had the chance to test the device myself on CeBIT this year. While I was already sure to buy it when it comes out, testing it with my own hands – and eyes – was just the best kind of confirmation possible. It is really amazing, especially if you think before that “it can’t be that good”. But it really is, it is a lot more amazing than I expected and I recommend everyone who hesitates about it to test it somewhere and get overwhelmed by the effect as I did.

  2. Pre-ordered mine (live in Sweden, so it arrives 25 mars).. Can’t wait!!! I’ve never been this excited about a Nintendo console before, and I’ve been a proud owner of every single one.

  3. I know that I’m going to buy for sure, but I’m on the fence about whether to get it on launch day or wait until I have job. I have enough money for it atm, but I think I should wait until I have a continuous supply because of all the awesome games that are going to be released over time. Plus, there aren’t any good games(that I’m interesting in) out currently, so LoZ Ocarina of Time will be the first one I get.

  5. Hey guys I am from South Africa(surprised?) and I have been wondering because we get it on the 25th and it costs R2700($385)which is a super rip-off and I have family in the UK who can get it for £187 but will need to send money electronically(dunno about that). To make matters worse I only have R500($71) and I will still need R2200($314) and I am selling my Wii. But my family comes out in a month so wat should I do I don’t have much more time! Thanks
