Nintendo 3DS: Paid Downloadable Content Coming To Nintendo 3DS And Wii U

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has stated that paid downloadable content will come to both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Nintendo most likely won’t offer paid downloadable content but no doubt third-party developers for both systems will. What’s your opinion on DLC?

One investor asked Iwata about his thoughts on paid download content. Nintendo is currently preparing a paid item transaction system for both 3DS and Wii U, Iwata revealed. For 3DS, this will be available to developers by the end of the year.

Nintendo may not end up using this system for itself, though. Later in his response, Iwata said that while pursuing paid download content opportunities would likely increase short term profits, it would not allow them to build along term relationship with customers. Therefor, Nintendo feels that it should not have this type of paid charge system for its own content.

Iwata denied that he is critical in general of the concept of paid downloads. He did, however, question the concept of free-to-play games, where you start playing the game for free and are charged for item purchases. He feels that this type of system would damage the premium value Nintendo’s content.

On the topic of digital downloads in general, Iwata noted that the 3DS internet connection rate is far beyond that of the DS. However, it’s still not at the one hundred percent satisfaction level, and furthermore, only a fraction of those people actually download paid content. He hopes that over the next three years, Nintendo will make the Nintendo e-Shop, the online shop that’s accessible from the 3DS, into a larger presence. He wants this to amount to a more drastic change than something like increasing ten percent from the current five present. Additionally, Iwata said he has a great desire to create a future where players will pay for digital content just like normal with no reservations. This will be a major point for Nintendo over the next three years, said Iwata.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently told investors that the company is busy developing new features for Mii Plaza and new Mii related games for the Nintendo 3DS.

Iwata was told by an investor that there was very little left to do on the app which prompted Iwata to reveal that Nintendo is working on new content for the application which will arrive later this year. Satoru Iwata also mentioned that Nintendo is also developing a number of new titles that make use of all the Miis people have collected on their Nintendo 3DS console. Wonder what those will be?

Nintendo 3DS: Street Fighter X Tekken ‘Is Possible’ For Nintendo 3DS

Street Fighter producer, Yoshinori Ono has revealed to Siliconera that there’s a distinct possibility that the eagerly awaited Street Fighter X Tekken could come to the Nintendo 3DS. I’d certainly take Street Fighter X Tekken over the proposed Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. How about you?

“It’s possible. For the 3DS, I wanted to do an [Super Street Fighter IV:] Arcade Edition version, but I haven’t had a chance to do that because of all the other things I’m up to. At the company, we’re debating should we go for an AE port on 3DS? Should we skip that and go straight to Street Fighter x Tekken? There are a lot of things up in the air, so I can’t say for sure what our next 3DS project will be.”

Nintendo Wii: Wii Is The Most Popular Console For Netflix Streaming

This may come as a surprise to many but it’s true, Wii is the most popular games console for Netflix streaming. 42% of all Netflix customers use the PC, 12% use the Xbox 360, 13% use the PlayStation 3, and 25% use the Wii. It’s not too difficult to see why the Wii is the most popular due to the console’s humongous user base. Great news for both Nintendo and Netflix.

Nintendo 3DS: EA Believe 3D Is A Waste Of Time

EA CEO John Riccitiello has told Games Industry that the company plans to move away from the 3D space as they see very little return on investment. EA are more interested in pursuing the social and online gaming marketplace. Wise choice?

“We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations,” Riccitiello told stockholders at EA’s annual meeting.

“Frankly we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home, at least not yet. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers are looking for.”

He also spoke about the problems faced by Nintendo’s 3DS.

“It was perceived to be the next big thing, there were complaints about is causing headaches and nausea and all sorts of things. Frankly, it didn’t do that for me, but there were complaints, and it’s not performed as well as they would like.”

Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Needed To Take Drastic Measures With The Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has explained to shareholders that Nintendo needed to take drastic measures with the Nintendo 3DS as sales of the console were falling far below their initial expectations. Iwata pointed out that Nintendo will reassess the situation four months after the price cut to work out what needs doing next.

As we announced at the E3 show, which was held in Los Angeles this past June, we have a strong software lineup for Nintendo 3DS toward the end of this calendar year, with which we were thinking that we would be able to boost the hardware sales, but in terms of the current situation, for us to be able to help Nintendo 3DS to become a sound successor to Nintendo DS, and to get it back on track to its originally-anticipated sales pace for its wide expansion, we concluded that we needed to take drastic measures, and we decided to make the markdown.

First, since the launch of Nintendo 3DS, one of the things we have learned is that it has taken longer than we had originally expected in order for the appeal of this product to widely spread.

Another reason is, we thought that eliminating the concerns of future hardware expansion early on would make a great difference to how retailers and software publishers will allocate their energies.

In short, we have concluded that, for Nintendo 3DS to expand enough to become the successor of Nintendo DS, we have to take a drastic approach.

More specifically, I hope you will at least try to see how it will play out over the next four months, until the end of the year-end sales season, before making any judgments.

On the other hand, a drastic markdown like this, before the mass-production effect can take place for the hardware, will naturally generate red ink on the hardware sales. As a result, a significant minus effect is expected on the profitability of the current fiscal year. Even though we understand this, for us to elevate Nintendo 3DS to be the platform that can sustain our business, we have concluded that we need to take the best possible measure we can take now, even at the cost of short-term profitability.

It is quite unusual for us to change the price in less than half a year from a product’s launch. I am aware that realizing both the short-term and the mid-to-long term profits is one of my responsibilities as part of the management. I feel greatly accountable for having to make the markdown shortly after the launch, for having damaged our consumers’ trust, for having made a significant impact upon the financial forecasts, for the annual dividend now being expected to be significantly less than originally expected and for now forecasting that there will be no interim dividend.

However, for the management to show its accountability for the level of the operating loss of this time and the prospect of no interim dividend, we decided at the directors’ meeting yesterday that we would reduce the compensation we will receive as the directors of the company.
