The Official Nintendo Magazine Says Super Mario Galaxy 2 Is The Greatest Nintendo Game Of All-Time

The official Nintendo magazine believes that the sublime Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the greatest Nintendo game of all-time. The publication has compiled a list of the top 100 Nintendo games, which contains the likes of The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario Bros. Do you agree with their decision to list Super Mario Galaxy 2 as the greatest Nintendo game of all-time?

          1. Sunshine wasn’t better than either of the Galaxies I don’t think. It had its merits but the voice acting was horrible and shouldn’t have been included, and galaxy was just a better game. Galaxy 2 was not the best game though

    1. I can understand why they said SMG 2 is the greatest of all time, but my favorites in order are still OoT 3D, SMG, Skyward Sword, SMG 2, and Mario Kart Wii (MK7’s item system is a bitch, if it wasn’t it would’ve beat out Mario Kart Wii).

    1. Your right. Anyone will fight and say “this is the greatest game ever” but it really comes down to opinion. Like GTA V, I dont think that is a great game. It feels like the other games. But others think its the best game of all time.

  1. Terrible pick, any of the last ten Zelda games beats super Mario galaxy 2 and every other Nintendo game, but most Nintendo games suck anyway

    1. Terrible pick? For choosing a game that has an average Metacritic score of 97 out of 100? Most Nintendo games suck anyway? Lol You’re an idiot. It’s simple.

  2. I think one of the ONM editors put it best
“If you had to show somebody a game that perfectly sums up Nintendo it would be Super Mario Galaxy 2”

  3. Yes. It was a truly beautiful and remarkable game that surpassed the WII’S graphic limit and ANY LIMIT! it was truly a masterpiece

  4. Super Mario World doesn’t exist now?

I honestly love Galaxy 2. Definitely my favourite Wii game, but Mario World is just so much better.

    Also, Skyward Sword? Really?

  5. As much as I liked SMG 2 I wouldn’t rate it in as my personal number 1 Nintendo game. I wouldn’t even say its in my top 10. I always think when a game reaches number 1 in charts like this it has to have done something new, something fresh something we haven’t seen before thats why I think a game like Super Mario 64 would be my number 1. Though everyones opinion is different so yea :)

  6. I like Galaxy 2, but I liked 1 better. Still though, I wouldn’t say either of those are the best Nintendo game. Actually, I can’t really think of what would be my favorite…

  7. I actually agree here, a little bit of a debate whether skyward sword was better, but Galaxy 2 was an excellent game, definitely one of my favorites.

    1. Retro fag. Almost all games from the “past” do not come close to modern. Look at the N64. Look at all the games people thought were good back then that are complete garbage now. The only N64 games that hold up are the two Zelda titles, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Paper Mario.

      1. Modern is great don’t get me wrong I’m playing Mass Effect 3 while I write this (Retro Fag?). I am saying that some older Nintendo games have better design elements then some of the newer.

What will be more popular at the end of 2020 and have more sales?
Mario Galaxy 2? or Zelda Ocarina of Time?

FYI Mario Galaxy 2 sold less then 7 million copies
Mario Galaxy sold over 10 million

Zelda Ocarina of Time sold 7.6 million in 1998
nobody can count how many sales have been made seen all the ports.

  8. I think that Sunshine is the best Mario game so far.

Also all the Zelda home-console-games since OoT are much better.

    1. That’s exactly what I love about the Galaxy series; it gets straight to the gameplay. It doesn’t bother itself with B-movie plot, in a National treasure knockoff. It deserves praise because it sets the pinnacle and acts as a paragon for 3D platformers.

        1. Ocarina of Time was AMAZING in 1998 and is still today. But GoldenEye. Go play a good modern shooter (BioShock, Crysis 2), the go play GoldenEye, one word will come to mind. OUTDATED!

    2. This list is for Nintendo games, Not Sega, Sony or any others. Purely Nintendo.

The title of this article states it. READ BEFORE YOU WRITE!

  9. fuck off mario galaxy 2 was fun but not what id call a GREAT game. ocarina of time, super metroid, super castlevania iv, majoras mask, twilight princess, wind waker, luigis mansion, mario sunshine, mario world, a link to the past, metroid prime, metroid prime 3 corruption, star fox 64, golden sun, castlevania dawn of sorrow, castlevania portrait of ruin, golden sun 2, pokemon emerald, pokemon white, smash brothers brawl, mario land 2 6 gold coins, mario 3d land, wario land 2, metroid prime 2 echoes, metroid fusion, metroid zero mission, metroid 2 return of samus, donkey kong 64, donkey kong country, banjo kazooie, banjo tooie, mega man x, megaman x 2, megaman x 3, megaman 2, megaman 7, megaman wily wars, megaman 5, super c, contra 3 alien wars, metal slug anthology, new super mario bros, links awakening, phantom hourglass, skyward sword, donkey kong country returns, contra… all better than mario galaxy 2

        1. You do. SMG 2 in my opinion was a great game, and I don’t think all of those are better than it, but it most certainly doesn’t beat the likes of Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, and defffinitely not Super Mario Bros.

          1. i see you’re point, i understand a lot of people really do like SMG 2, i did really enjoy it but it lacked something that would have made it special. it just felt a bit cheap that it was exactly the same (almost) as SMG just with different levels and the odd new addition. it felt more like an expansion to SMG than an all new game. But yes i also agree OoT, SM64 and SMB were all better than SMG 2.

    1. It say Nintendo only stupid and plus if you like skyward sword one problem motion controls and golden eye is not Nintendo when this came out ass

  10. For me, SMG will always be better than its sequel. Sure the level design was slightly better in SMG2, but in terms of the epic intro and epilogue, music, originality and sheer ‘wow’ factor SMG was just all around better.

If I were making a top Nintendo games list I’d make sure that Majora’s Mask, Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64), Metroid Prime (trilogy), GoldenEye 007, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom et al.

  11. Calum Nicholson-Walker

I’d concur it’s a serious contender. I’m not sure what the definitive best Nintendo game is though.

  12. Games have too many different styles to consider one single game the greatest of all time. It’d be like telling someone my homemade chili is the best food in the world if that someone didn’t like chili. They wouldn’t agree with it no matter how good or bad it was. These comments reflect that.

Instead, you have to categorized these things with thinks like it; compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. That said, SMG2 is definitely in the running for one of the best 3D platformers out there.

  13. Livin' Ain't Eazy When You Cheezy

Way too many games to say for certain. LoZ definitely needs to be up there but Mario is also worthy. Then there is Pokemon Yellow. Oooooooh

  14. I agree, I fave my own favs like Zelda, but Galaxy 2 was amazing. I was surprised how different it felt from Galaxy 1, yet still managed to fit the nostalgia factor pretty well.

Also, it’s too unfair to call a game the greatest since there are too MANY great games!

  15. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was awesome, but it was pretty much just more levels of the first game. While fun, I don’t think it was ground-breaking or creative enough to be considered the best Nintendo game ever. Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 not only revolutionised platforming with their vast maps, interesting structure and impressive graphics, but they are truly timeless in that we can still play them every now and then without thinking “ya know, these games are more flawed than the games of today”.

  16. Like some had said before me, the under appreiciated Super Mario Sunshine, and then Super Mario World are my favs, although Mario 3 holds a special place also.
My other top Nintendo games would then include A Link to the Past, F-Zero GX and Donkey Kong Country Returns. I obviously still have alot to play though!

    1. I agree with you.

Metroid and Zelda has epic games that will be in the top 3.

Metroid, Zelda and Mario should be top 3.

      1) Metroid Prime

      2) Zelda OC

      3) Mario Galaxy 2

That should be the list ;)

    1. O_O

We are not surprised that a Nintendo game won because this is a Best Nintendo game list. Every game on this list is a Nintendo game.

  17. i agree galaxy 2 then 1 then super mario bros and brawl i guess those are the only good nintendo wii games

  18. Pingback: Super Mario Galaxy 2: El mejor juego de Nintendo de todos los tiempos según The Official Nintendo Magazine

  19. Someone knows a website where i can download the Nintendo Magazine? im from outside the US so, i really want to check it

  20. And there will be no Mario Galaxy without the CLASSIC THAT STARTED IT! MARIO BROS!

Really though, Not starting game wise I prefer Mario Sunshine… it was the best.

  21. super mario 64 which symbolise amazing evolution of game industry from 2D to 3D, which is not only Nintendos’ ,but overall best game of all-time.

  22. I think we can all agree that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is perfect, there are no flaws and is long, but that doesn’t mean is more enjoyable than other games, for me, i find Sunshine more enjoyable, even though it had some problems.

  23. There isn’t a best. Maybe one for each genre, but I personally like Zelda a bit more than Mario, so I’d always say Oot is better, or Lttp is better.

      1. Ancient Hero you forgot to things about the game its motion controls and the simple story but only thing positive its the crazy character it added to Zelda

  24. SMG2 = Greatest game of all time? LOL FUCKING WUT

Sorry, but that spot was taken 8 years ago….by Half-Life 2. WIN

  25. Imo, no one should even try to pick the one “greatest game of all time”. Everyone has their own opinion, their own taste in games. As for myself, I prefer Skyward Sword, Majora’s Mask, and Pokemon Black/White to Super Mario Galaxy 2. However, they (The people who wrote the article) have their own opinion, and I’ll respect that.

  26. I actually consider Super Mario Galaxy to be the best game of all time but I do admit that Super Mario Galaxy 2 had a lot of features that were better than the first. I was hoping for a Super Mario Galaxy 3 on Wii that took all the best qualities of the first one and use all the new features of the second one. I was hoping it would be on Wii but I wouldn’t mind a Wii U version of Super Mario Galaxy 3.

  27. Since I got the 120th star & found Yoshi on the castle rooftop, I looked forward to the day that I got to play a sequel with a “rideable” Yoshi. There was no Super Mario 64 II & Yoshi was only a tease in Sunshine. Galaxy 2 fulfilled that “future dream” & much more. Having Luigi playable was also pretty awesome for me. I can see why others would disagree, but “Super Mario Galaxy 2” replaced Resident Evil 4 as my favorite game of all-time. “BEST” game of all time? THAT is debatable unto infinity. My personal favorite game where everything felt perfect? Yes.

  28. Skyward Sword, nor Super Mario Galaxy one or two deserve that top spot. Brilliant games? Yes, but we all know that Nintendo has created dozens of masterpieces, and the likes Ocarina of Time, Earthbound, Super Metroid, among others probably deserve that spot. Every list is entirely subjective though

    1. I’m going to have to disagree with you there. They are completely different styles of storytelling and gaming, and have entirely different atmospheres. They are not competing against each other, but rather embracing what they are made for. Zelda is made to be more serious and epic, with a little bit of humor thrown in every now and then. Mario is made to be more light-hearted fun, rather than big, epic stories (although let’s face it, the storytelling in the SMG games was pretty epic). Personally though, my favorite Nintendo game is Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, which is a bit more like Zelda in terms of storytelling, but maintains the quirky Mario like atmosphere and characters that we all know and love… And maybe because it made me tear up a bit when I beat it… That may or may not have something to do with it…

  29. I gotta say, I’ve never played SMG2 so I can’t comment on it. My favourite Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 3 and my favourite Zelda game is Wind Waker. But in terms of importance and ease of play I would say the best Nintendo game of all time is Super Mario Bros.

If i was going to introduce a person who has never played video games to games, I would put on Super Mario Bros.

    Leave luck to heaven.

  30. Not a big fan of Mario even though I really enjoy SMG2 as a great game.
But I don’t agree with the standard of “One Game Beats Em All”.
WANT lots of (at least) good (or better) games, not “Limited Edition of Only One Great Game”.
This “Greatest Thing” looks based on selling promotion etc.

  31. It’s hard to rank Nintendo game because they’re all so unique. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is way up there; I’m not sure if I like it or Skyward Sword more.

But, when it’s all said and done, I must say that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is my favorite Nintendo game of all time.

  32. Zelda majoras mask, most underratted game ever and is my fav ever. Metroid prime 1,2,3. Skyward sword and twilight princess are good to.

  33. Got that maagazine yesterday and was pretty dissppointed in it in general. While I agree that Super Mario Galaxy 2 is great it’s not the best one. But the rest of the list was kinda random and seemed to favour newer games. Wii Sports Resort as one of the best ones yet the likes of Blast Corps and Mario + Luigi never even got into top 100. Final Fantasy 3(Not the American one) got in yet Final Fantasy 4 didn’t. Really?

Also no sign of the likes of Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents, Earthbound, Pokemon Red and Blue (HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE RED AND BLUE!?) and a few others. At first I thought it was exclusives but then saw the likes of DJ Hero 3, Rock Band and Tony Hawk on the list so

  34. Etecoons and Dachoras

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a fine game, but greatest Nintendo game of all time? I dunno, that’s a pretty hefty title if you ask me.

In my humble opinion, Nintendo’s greatest game of all time is a tie between Super Metroid and Zelda: A Link to the Past.

    1. Why does it matter if something is an incremental improvement? If its better then its better. If someone had played neither, which should they buy? I don’t see how anyone can rate 64 so highly; the cameras are just too flawed. Sunshine had nothing like the feelgood that the Galaxies have. I’m still playing SMG2 and its in my top ten. It leaves me with a smile. Other gamers can keep their driving sims and FPS, I play to enjoy.

  36. SMRPG>SMS>SMB3>64>SMG>M&LSS>Paper Mario TTD>Paper Mario>Mario Kart Series>SMB>SMG2>the rest

And that’s just the Mario side of the list if you ask me…
