Nintendo Making Super Mario 4?

Nintendo purchases domain names all the time, but when they register one for Super Mario 4 everyone’s interest picks up. We already know that Nintendo currently has a new 2D Super Mario game in the works for the Nintendo 3DS and that they’re most likely to show it off at E3 in June. Do you think the new Mario game for Nintendo 3DS could be Super Mario 4?

      1. “Nintendo currently has a NEW 2D Super Mario game in the works for the Nintendo 3DS”
The key word there is “new” so it probably won’t be a SMW remake.

        1. So they should probably call it 5 to be correct. Then again they called the 3DS Mario Kart MK7, and some folks believe it should be 9 because of the arcade games.

        1. Well they remade games that defined of lot of people’s childhoods. Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64. There are remakes of other classic games that weren’t developed by Nintendo, like Goldeneye 64. A remake of Super Mario World wouldn’t be too difficult, in my opinion.

    1. I Hate Net Explorer

The same idea has applied to Final Fantasy but I won’t go into detail about that franchises confusion. Anyway if this is the case for Super Mario 4 then it’ll probably be 5 in Japan.

    2. Well you see that’s the keyword “bros” there is Super Mario Bros and Super Mario, there is a difference. For example the first Super Mario was Super Mario 64 the second being Sunshine the third being Galaxy and since galaxy 2 was a direct prequel to Galaxy than it isn’t considered a main number. Like CoD 4 and Modern Warfare 2. The First Super Mario Bros game was the one on the NES.

      1. Outside of Japan, you’d be right, but in Japan the game was Super Mario Bros. 4. Thus the fuss.

    3. Yeah but in America is totally different, like when Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan is actually Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels, and the american version of Super Mario Bros 2 is actually Doki Doki Panic.

  1. I’d love that and they did say a 2D Mario was planned for the 3DS this year, but yeah as stated SMW is Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan.

    1. Yeah but in America is totally different, like when Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan is actually Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels, and the american version of Super Mario Bros 2 is Doki Doki Panic.

      1. Which is why it would be a problem if the game was called SMB4 in all territories, including Japan.

    1. You do realize the DS was 3D (not in the same sense the 3DS is, but still) right and so was the Wii and they both got 2D Marios. So….what’s odd about that? FYI: Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion also coming for DS this year and its 2D.

      1. So you are defining 2D = side scrolling platform… Is that correct? So, Epic Micky won’t have 3D backgrounds at least?

        1. yes thats exsactly right

2D gaming is defined as Side scrolling or birds eye gaming

Classic Mario and Sonic games are 2D side scrollers and a good exsample of a Birds eye would be classic Final Fantasy games

      1. dafuq? How is he a CoD gamer if he wondered why a 2D platform was going to be on a 3D system. It’s not like he was saying it’s impossible. I can understand where he’s coming from. Sonic Generations and Mutant Mudds were both 2D platformers, but they were 3D.

        1. Just because it’s a 2D game, doesn’t mean it won’t use the 3D depth… 2D refers to movement in 2D. Mario can still smash a koopa and send him towards the camera in the distance, or even use the neat tricks from Mutant Mudds.

          1. THATS what some of us were unsure about. How the fuck were we supposed to know a 2D game can still have 3D depth.

Maybe we missed the memo, but give us a break folks!

    2. It means the gameplay will be similar to that of a 2D platformer. 2D simply means a game where there are only 2 dimensions ofcourse, left/right and up/down. Since its on the 3DS it’ll just have a bit of a 3D effect to make it look like its standing out from the screen.

  2. In America It was just Super Mario World, so we could be getting a Super Mario 4 while the Japanese gets something like “Super Mario Desu Mitsumishu Empire” or something

    1. Funny name, but what what could happenis the game being called SMB4 in all territories, including Japan.

  3. Yea! I could’ve sworn SMw was smb4 so now I’m guessing they might re…release it? I mean it came out for the gba so maybe it could come out on the Nintendo store for the 3ds?

  4. Which can only mean that we’re getting a Mario game set in Dinosaur Land! It makes perfect sense right? Right?! IT HAS TO BE TRUE, SO PLEASE GIVE ME MY CAPE NINTENDO!!

  5. It would be cool if this is a launch title for the Wii U. They need a powerful first party title at launch to bring in the core Nintendo crowd.

    Leave luck to heaven.

  6. Sounds great! I hope it’s a sequel to Super Mario World, it’s the best 2D Mario platformer they ever made.

  7. Makes sense… 3D Land was essentially the sequel to SMB3.. Are we really going to get a sequel to SMW?

  8. Wasn’t Mario World already Mario 4? If I remember correctly, SMW’s Japanese name IS Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World, furthermore, it is a direct sequel to SMB3, as its backstory refers to the events of SMB3 and we even know what Became of Bowser’s airship in World.

My belief is that Nintendo simply trademarked the name internationally to avoid bootleg games with that name (myself, I saw plenty of Mario 4’s in my country -that is, Mexico- during the NES and SNES days) with that title, just like they do all the time with Pokémon games names.

  9. Probably that “new” 2D Mario they hinted at in the investor meeting earlier this year.

Sounds awesome already. Whether it is SMW or another sequel is great. I’d rather have a different adventure though.

Remember that Yoshi’s Island is a sequel to Super Mario World. So that shoots down any other sequel to SMW.

    1. It’s a 2D game, so it’s not part of that series. It’s part of Super Mario, Super Mario 2, Super Mario 3 series. Not sure where NSMB is, or that in Japan that SMW is Super Mario 4. Lots of issues with that.

  10. I personally thought Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Land 2 were the best 2D platformers Nintendo ever made. World was a bit of a step back if I’m honest. However, this is exciting news.

It’s just called Super Mario 4. If Bros is Land, and technically there was never a Land 4 (Land 3 was Wario Land, then it carried on using the Wario Land connotation), and I wouldn’t say 3D Land was a true sequel to Super Mario Lands 2 or 3…

Leave luck to heaven indeed. They certainly know how to tease and get the world of gaming talking about it.

  11. 3308-5494-1135 add me

I like the sound of this game already. I can’t wait for Ultimate Super Mario 4 Turbo Edition.

  12. As long as it doesn’t end up being another terrible “New Super Mario Bros.” game, I’m pretty excited!

  13. If this news is true, I can’t wait to see what Nintendo will say about it at E3 2012.
I’m looking forward to finding out all the details about the Wii U final model, and hopefully the prices and release dates too.

    1. Exactly. It’s the game that was being played in the demo video of the WIi U. Remember when the kid is playing and the dad comes in and wants to watch tv. I think it’ll be that complete game.

  15. I don’t really care what it is. As long as the Koopalings are in it.
    I’m happy they brought them back for NSMB Wii, but they’re just too good to waste. And I’ve always been a huge nostalgiafag about them. ;__;

  16. Let’s make a 2D game for our 3D handheld.
I had no desire to upgrade from my DS to a 3DS, and I have virtually every system. However, now I’ll lprobably upgrade for one game, New Super Mario Bros. 3DS – or whatever they call it.

  17. Nintendo sure is thinking hard for the next mario game… but is it true…

    Now you’re playing with power

  19. 64supermarioreturns

You know this could mean the fourth series for Mario as in:
    1. Super Mario 64
    2. Super Mario Sunshine
    3. Super Mario galaxy 1 and 2
    4. Super Mario 4
And this could mean it is for the Wii U, the 2D Mario game for the 3DS can be totally unrelated to Super Mario 4.

This may be that new Mario game we heard about back at E3 when the Australian Nintendo site reveled a new Mario game for the Wii U, this could be a sequel to the Super Mario games that were on the past home consoles like 64, Sunshine, Galaxy & Galaxy 2, and now the untitled Super Mario 4 HD on the Wii U.

  22. I hope the game has some real depth and freedom to it. Like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, etc.. I mean Super Mario 3D Land was great and all, but I don’t just want to play through a bunch of cool levels and save peach for the 500th time. I want to explore new areas, have plenty of things to unlock, extra features, and just a world that is complex enough to spend hours exploring it all. Their next Mario game should really be a good one.

  23. I personally believe that Super Mario 4 belongs on a console. I mean I will still get it if it comes out on 3DS but I think the core Mario series should remain on consoles.

  24. a new super mario bros. sequel! i’m so excited!!! i want all power-ups of mario: from penguin suit to the feather, from tanuki leaf to the p balloon!!

  28. Wait, what? I know Nintendo registered Super Mario 4 as a domain, and I did speculate about this myself, but I think everyone’s jumping to conclusions a bit by assuming it refers to the next Mario game in development.
