Cave Story+ Coming To Nintendo 3DS eShop, Separate From Cave Story 3D

Developer and Nicalis CEO Tyrone Rodriguez has announced that Cave Story+ will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Cave Story+ is apparently a remake and a completely separate game from Cave Story 3D which was released on Nintendo DSiWare.

A version of Cave Story+ launched on Steam, but Rodriguez says that this iteration is different. The 3DS version of Cave Story+ can’t handle the ‘Steam HD art’ or new music, but the sprites will be rendered in 3D. The game will feature the originals soundtrack.

“I fought really hard to try to get it to be just a ‘simple’ update; I feel that Nintendo wanted the same thing too, but the logistics behind it are pretty huge. The good thing is that if you already bought the DSiWare version on your 3DS and ever delete it, you’ll still be able to download it. The update won’t stop you from playing the prior version of the game.”

    1. for me ,, Nintendo should slowdown in developing games ,, they should atleast accept mobilegames to gain sales from Indie developers ,, I dont want mobile gaming to dominate handheld gaming industry ,, They need some casual games from other developers ,, Binding of Isaac was sick but Nin was being to kiddy ,,

        1. Nintendo wasn’t being to kiddie. It was the religious fanatics fault. Do you have any idea how much hell nintendo would get if the media started saying that nintendo supports anti-Christian games. They are already in enough of a hard spot, and all it takes is one little kid downloading it and showing it to their mom or dad and for them to blow it out of proportion.

  1. Ugh. I love Cave Story as much as the next guy (I own every version of it to date) But, aren’t they trying too hard to siphon money out of this game?

      1. It’s a great game and definitely worth the time and money. There’s just so many damn versions of it. There’s the original Freeware, Cavestory Wii, Cavestory DSi, Cavestory +, and Cavestory 3D. They’re all pretty much the same game with different music and graphics and maybe an easter egg or two.

        1. I’ve got to agree. Cave Story is a really good freeware. But when you have to put a price on it, you can find much much better game for the same price.

I think PIXEL should start doing new games, or a sequel/prequel to cave story, instad of porting it over and over again. And I don’t really get the point of doing it on the eShop since it’s already on it through DSi Ware. :/

I’m a huge fan of this game, but now I feel abused. He’d rather try to milk the small fanbase instead of doing something new.

          1. A Cave Story prequel would be much more interesting. We never really got too much information on Quote’s past or about the war that took place.

  2. too bad i already bought the dsiware version and put it on my 3ds. not paying for this game twice.

        1. The quote is misleading. You would have to re-purchase the new one. None of the features for the actual 3DS version will be added to the DSiware version–which they still had the guile to sell on the 3DS eShop knowing they would be soon releasing a proper port for the system. (Source: Someone who bought the DSiware version prior to it being removed from the eShop.)

  3. for all you idiots out there–ITS A FREE SOFTWARE UPDATE!!! IF YOU HAVE THE GAME ALREADY THEN THIS IS TOTALLY FREE!!! Thank you for your time

Gawd I swear children today are so blind. I dunno, maybe you just trollin

        1. As a civil disagreement, I read it as it being a new game/download. But, if you already own the DSiWare version and delete it, you aren’t forced to buy the new one. That’s how I interpretted it, anyway.

Apparently it’s an update for the DSiware version on the 3DS. Or is it a new version? Update can mean a fresh look that is separate from the original.

  5. WTF cavestory is penis!! Who plays that game anuyway! Besides now you gortta pay another 1000000 dollars for a crap mouth game. Great job dickalis.

  6. Um.. is there any reason to buy Cave Story 3D now?

I mean, there’s the free PC software, the DSiWare, the 3D game.. and now this. They should’ve just made a new game instead.

  7. Haha, fuck off Nicalis. Stop milking every opportunity to re-release cave story. Cave Story Wii was a failure, Cave Story 3D looked like a pile of wank and wasn’t suitable for retail, Cave Story + was probably as close as you would get to a proper re-release. But coming up and saying that the 3DS version can’t handle the updated artwork is just bullshit. You’re so lazy that you have to take somebody else’s game and violate it for all it’s worth, the 3DS is capable of a lot of things, it’s just your lazy excuses just so you can make a quick buck off of one man’s 5 years of hard work.

Cave Story was a free PC game. I intend never to pay money for a free game. Especially when a company like you is distributing it.

  8. Sweeet. Have yet to see Cave Story 3DS AT ALL in stores and my order pre-order with amazon was finally cancelled due to not being able to stock it.

  9. Sweet! I bought the DSIware version and was prepared to be disappointed if I couldn’t update; but this is amazing news

  10. This is rather unclear, to be honest… Can’t tell if it’s an update to the DSiWare version or not. I think it is… Otherwise, I’ll be disappointed.

I gotta admit that this is starting to get old, though. I love Cave Story as much as the next guy, but they could’ve stopped at the DSi version…
