Retro Studios Is ‘Too Busy’ To Work On Zelda

Shigeru Miyamoto says that Retro Studios is far too busy at the moment to be working on a Zelda game for Wii U. However, Miyamoto wouldn’t rule out the possibility of them eventually handling the beloved franchise.

“Retro is very busy right now, but I’m afraid I can’t say exactly what it is that they’re very busy [working] on.”

“In terms of them working on a Zelda, it’s not out of the question, certainly, for them to work on an entire Zelda game amongst themselves. Traditionally I think that the Zelda team has always had a close contact with anyone who’s working on a Zelda game. If you were going to have that happen in the US at Retro, that would be kind of difficult for them to be able to coordinate. Certainly they’re too busy for that sort of thing right now. It would probably require me to be involved to a great extent as well, so I would have to get over quite a bit too. I’d probably have to live in Texas… [laughs]”

    1. Uhh it could be Donkey Kong also. Retro did make a DK game. Plus at the pre-e3 presentation a picture was taken of Saturo Iwata looking at a bunch of Bananas. I think It”s very possible it could be another Donkey Kong Country game

      1. Nope, they said they are not doing a Donkey Kong sequel. I’m sure it’ll happen eventually – but that’s not Retro’s current project.

      2. DK was I think confirmed. Have you seen the pictures of DK in a 3DS case with Luigis Mansion and Smash Bros 3DS beside it ?

    2. More likely Star Fox, which I think would be great to rejuvenate and revive the franchise. Another DK from Retro I would be excited for as well.

  1. Finally. People can stop talking about a Zelda Wii U. I love Zelda, but its too soon for one to come out.

    1. The games are usually in development for years, so even if they had started immediately after E3 2011, it wouldn’t be released until 2014 at the earliest.

      1. The time is right for a portable entry, though. It’s not a Retro-developed game given this article, but it’s possible that Grezzo could be working on it. They could be the new Flagship, the Capcom stuido that made the Oracle games, Four Swords, and Minish Cap.

    1. There are a lot of hints that suggest Retro’s project will come out soon enough. I love that idea- that game would be a great showcase for the Wii U’s potential

  2. i hope they are working on a starfox game and that time with ultra graphics.i want that game to be at maxinum power of the console

    1. That’s not possible that close to launch, consoles only get games developed to their limit at about the half of their lifespan.

      1. It certainly is possible, just not likely. We don’t know how long Retro has been working on this game or how early they got their devkits.
Just because no one has done it before does not make it impossible.

  3. Whatever it is Retro is doing, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. I hope it’s Star Fox. Maybe it’s a new IP. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Every Retro game rocks. The Prime games rock. Mario kart 7 rocks. Donkey Kong Country Returns rocks. This one will rock, too.

      1. Mario Kart 7 wasn’t even completely a Retro game. Just because they only worked on part of it doesn’t mean it’s theirs. Nor does it mean they were responsible for what made it good.

        1. Doesn’t matter. They touched it, it became gold.

(Nah, I know what you mean. His point is still valid, though. Retro has some of the best critical average in the whole industry)

  4. I’m not sure if this is a good thing or not. I mean, I’m really glad that they’re busy working on other projects, I love all the games they’ve made so far. At the same time however, I would really like to see how they would handle the Zelda franchise. They could really bringe some much needed freshness into the series.
I personally have the the suspicion right now that they are working on an F-Zero game, due to things that have been said and their role in MK7’s development.

    1. There is always a possibility that they could do like they did with Mario Kart, and give Nintendo a hand on it and just have a smaller role. I think some of the touches they could add would be great.

    2. Much needed freshness? You mean, new art style, new way of play, and so on? That happens with every Zelda.

  5. “Too Busy.”

That means Retro Studios is making a very great game, to match the wonderful power of the Wii U. Metroid Prime 4? Donkey Kong Country Returns II? Hell, a new IP!

  6. I think a deep Starfox mulitplayer experience could put the Wii U on the radar for online multiplayer. But no matter what they do, they’ll pull it off. Very few studios can take an old franchise and completely change it while still keeping most of the fans happy.

  7. I’d love me some Metroid, but I’d love me some StarFox even more, that series REALLY deserves a new game, Metroid can wait a year or 2.

    1. Never going to happen. They were created with the purpose of making Nintendo games. So even before they were officially made into a Nintendo first party, they already were de facto Nintendo first party.

    2. No Mircosoft would end up killing Retro studio creatively like they did with Rare, although Rare was loosing their touch prior to Nintendo selling them off.

  8. Haha Miyamoto living in Texas would be awesome, since Retro is like 20 minutes away from my house. Maybe I’d be lucky enough to run into him grocery shopping or something. pwahaha.
    Only a dream…

      1. I’m in San Antonio, I’ll meet u there in 45 min to help u..hahaha! Hey why don’t you hang out at the bars in Austin I’m sure you’ll run into some Retro game developers that can spill the beans while drinking….

  9. I wish they would tell us! Maybe it’s an unannounced game for Wii U. Last Metroid game from them was in 2007. Nearly 5 years, that’s long enough for me.

    1. It’s too soon for a Zelda Evan, we just had Skyward Sword, Zelda games typically take 3 to 6 years to develop, so chances are, somewhere around 2014 to 2016 we should be seeing a new Zelda, I’d be surprised if we get one early

  11. I’m glad it isn’t Zelda – we celebrated his 25th last year, we need a break.

It’s not Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 – Retro has indicated they are not making a sequel.

As much as I love Star Fox, I doubt it’s Star Fox – I think Nintendo is putting Star Fox on the back burner for a while, I have a feeling the 3DS remake of 64 didn’t sell enough.

I’m willing to bet that it’s a new Metroid game. I’m hoping it’s a Wii U game that makes full use of the new Gamepad (scanning, visors, etc – it just works perfectly! Point the screen at the screen to use the special visor – no changing on the main TV!) I’m also hoping it is a First Person Game, like the Prime trilogy, however I hope it takes place after Fusion.

  12. It’s gonna be Metroid Prime 4 and they’ll bring back multiplayer. Nintendo will want a good shooter to use with the GamePad.

  13. that’s too bad… I always had this stupid hope that they had been hiding an amazing Wii U Zelda from the world… Oh well. That’ll come later, I suppose.

  14. Logic of Nintendrone retards

Hmm a game everybody wants well based on SALES it must be Mii sports cuz it sold as much as caca wii -_-

  15. ^this yup mii outsold them all its greatest game it pwns mario zelda and metriof shit. Mii kids oh yeah

  16. They’re probably working on multiple projects. Regardless, this is exciting news. Retro is an amazing studio.

  18. Why does everyone want Star Fox? I have never found the game the exciting…not to mention we have had like 4 iterations in the last 5 years, even if some were rehashed…nor do I want to see DK, as the one they just did was great and that will do for now…

I want to see something new…either a new IP, or, what I really want to see, is Retro do a new Earthbound…I don’t see why that is so farfetched…people right now may be shouting DK, Metroid, and Star Fox, but these boards about 3 years ago were loaded with people shouting for an Earthbound…

    We can hope…
