New Super Mario Bros 2 Receives Mixed Reviews

Several publications have got their hands on the long-awaited New Super Mario Bros 2 for the Nintendo 3DS and the reviews seem to be a mixed bag. As previously reported Famitsu gave the game the highest score with a near-perfect 36/40. Other publications such as CVG and 3D Juegos awarded the game a solid 8/10. New Super Mario Bros 2 currently has an 81 score on Metacritic.

                1. But he’s right, when I hear “mixed” I think “Oh, it’s going to be something really low here”.. 8 is not really low. Especaily since the highest is 36/40 that’s = 9 on a normal scale. the difference between 8 and 9 is not that big.

        1. New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros Wii were in the late 80′s range and Metacritic, and there’s only been six reviews of the game counting the Metacritic reviews and other ones you listed :|

        2. Its not exactly in the sake calibur as older Mario titles, like 3, World or even the reception that the original New title got. People are bored with the New series, im skipping the WiiU version, although i might get this.

I think people are itching for another Super Mario World, with a new artstyle

          1. Get the U version instand of this if you’re going to choose one of them. The Wii U game looks really interesting and up to 5 player Multiplayer calls for some nice gaming nights with friends and family :)

            1. I couldnt really get into the multiplayer on the Wii version. My mulitplayer from Nintendo comes from games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and NintendoLand when it comes out.
I havent seen anything to really keen my interest in NSMBU, although that could change

        3. Down with sickr! Boo! Let’s all judge him because we are jealous he has an amazing wordpress!

Burn the website to the ground! Grab your pitchforks and high-and-mighty comments! Let’s get him!

        4. @ Sickr; I think the way people judge scores these days is pretty messed up, personally.
Back in the 90′s, a 5 was middle of the road, okay but not great or terrible.
Now a 7 is the line and anything below it automatically sucks?
Sorry, but I personally still go by the 90′s form; an 8 is a damned high score regardless of the game as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll only start calling a game a failure when it gets a 4 or lower.

      1. how about everyone hops off of his ****. Let Sickr do what he wants, it’s his blog, f*****g crybabies

      1. Does one need to -play- it? Just look at all of the walkthroughs and gameplay videos. It’s the same game. Stop being deluded suckers.

        1. Yes, LOOKING at something is just as credible as, you know, playing.

Fuck, I doubt you even WATCHED it either.

          1. Watch out guse, innovative and revolutionary gameplay right hurr.

Not a cut and paste at all, even the music is NEW!

            1. Go to a game store and point out sequels that don’t use the same gameplay as older titles. NSMB titles add something different to the table with each game. Usually it’s new powerups, but with NSMB2, it adds a different goal to levels. This the same with other games like Portal and Call of Duty. Portal 1 and 2 have the same gameplay, but Portal 2 adds more to it. Call of Duty games all have the same gameplay, and… well, look at MW2 and MW3.

            1. A: NSMBDS is a sequal not a reskin.
B:NSMB2 may be a reskin, but it’s still a great game.
C:Every game has the same thing in common.
Aeolus I bet you like getting a lot of attention just by being fundimentaly wicked and destructive. Is that why you post comments here? To get on everyone’s nerve and get your attention. I don’t have a problem with you, but you must be eliminated.

      1. Woo, they threw in coin centric gameplay with the same basic level design since the first game.

        So inspiring and innovative.

            1. Really? Then how come people always mention Call of Duty? Any idea? Not that you have the brain power to do so. I’ll just leave it at that.

              1. Also, nice backhanded and unwarranted statement, but your name is NintendoMasterG, so I think I’ll just drop berating you.

                1. Why am I responding? Because you’re an idiot, and I must help you, that’s why. When does a name have anything to do with what a person write? I could call myself “Genius” and it still wouldn’t matter. Wannabe troll much? If I made a spelling error, you’d probably make a big point out of that, too.

            1. Why do you respond to Aeolus? God don’t be idiot and respond to him. Well all know it’s just his opinion. Nintendo is having cars made for them while this guy is on a nintendo forum wasting his life away? Who is the winner here? Nintendo!

Just ignore him anyone that responds to him after this an idiot.

It’s like being in a sony forum an a xbox troll comes in your suppose to just ignore him.

If nobody responds who will he talk to himself? Let him expose his no life don’t waste your time. He is probably a 300 pound fat Mexican who faps to hentai.

              Move on.

                1. You’re not even worth the title of “shit”, so shut up, will ya? All these comments by you… Oh boy, it’s like you’re here all day.

              1. I take offence to that mexican “joke” you ignorant piece of shit, I hope you die from a needle to your dick you little piece of shit.

    1. I take that back. 8 isn’t generous. This game should obviously be awarded 100,never mind 8! It’s the crap known as Call Of Duty that should be rated less. Less as in 0!

    2. It’s not a piece of crap, but yes it’s very bland and no where near as original as the amazing Super Mario Bros. 3 or Mario World. Nintendo should take a few cues from those games while crafting a more original world. The 1 million coin thing just seems like a repetitive chore and the co-op is nothing new (and it’s not even available online)!

    1. I was gonna say the same thing. It IS pretty good, considering that NSMB2 isn’t as ambitious as other Mario games. I still can’t wait to play it, though!

  1. I think it’s bad that Nintendo releases so many Mario games so fast. Super Mario 3D Land was released in November last year, New Super Mario Bros. 2 is going to be released in August and when we reach Wii U’s release in November, we’ll get New Super Mario Bros. U. That means in the period of one year, we get 3 Mario platform games. Either Nintendo are going to be frequently releasing Mario games every year, or they are not going to release any Mario games for a while now..

            1. You never bought any of them, yet you got them “mostly” for free? “Mostly” is not all of them, smartass.

        1. I post too many Nintendo-bashing comments because I think I’m so clever! But I’m no longer hate Nintendo. I love Nintendo now. PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. 1985 – 1 game
        1988 – 1 game
        1989 – 1 game
        1990 – 1 game
        1991 – 1 game
        1992 – 1 game
        1993 – 1 game
        1994 – 1 game
        1996 – 1 game
        2002 – 1 game
        2006 – 1 game
        2007 – 2 games
        2009 – 1 game
        2010 – 1 game
        2011 – 1 game
        2012 – 2 games

Basically, the closest it has been was 2 games (2007, 2009-2010). This is counting real Mario platform games, no RPG-focused games nor remakes. So yeah, go fuck yourself you stupid assfag and I hope your whole family dies. You know, the usual stuff you say when you own other people. Oh and:

        Dumbass. :)

        1. It’s not the fact that Nintendo releases too many, it’s the fact that there is nothing to differentiate this game from the previous entries in the series. It’s a rehash.

          1. “it’s the fact that there is nothing to differentiate this game from the previous entries in the series”

Coin Rush, the 1 Million Coin Challenge, StreetPass, Gold Mario, World Mushroom, Flower and Star.

Let’s see how you pathetically try to counter this.

            1. Yeah, because those are meaningful and legitimate changes to the series that affect the gameplay experience.

Actually no. none of them do.

            2. Coin Rush – A new mode. This adds nothing.

1 Million Coin Challenge – This adds nothing.

              StreetPass – That’s a functionality of the 3DS.

World Mushroom – What is that even?

Flower and Star – because these aren’t in basically every other Mario game in existence.

              1. The gameplay is exactly the same, music is exactly the same, graphics and character models exactly the same, the levels still look bland.

        2. Wow, dumb ass, you STILL can’t count.

1986: Lost Levels, Vs. Super Mario Bros., All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

          All platformers. Fail, fuckwad.

          1. Right, yes. How could I forget that Lost Levels was released in the US in 1986. As well as Vs. Super Mario Bros, which is just a remake of the original. All Night Nippon is just a hack version of Lost Levels and it was as well only released in Japan.

Please, stop failing even more, you’re only embarrassing yourself. :)

            1. so what if its the same, i basically play mario because well it’s mario nd I’m sure I’ll have fun doing so..

      1. I just don’t see the need to review a game that’s been out for years and been reviewed my many publications and websites- wait, you’re telling me this is a NEW game?

          1. The game is suppose to be called New Super Mario Bros. 3, since NSMBW is the second NSMB game.

You also can’t punctuate for shit.

            1. “This game is suppose”

Yeah, you can’t use proper grammar for shit either.

What’s funny is these games aren’t “new” anymore, since they’re all virtually the same thing and premise.

    1. I’ve never played the game and I know I would score it lower. Like a comment said up top, “mixed” gets more clicks.

      1. Id score it lower, but im sure if i played it, id still enjoy it alot, and im someone thats actually bored with the New series, i want a new art style, amd gameplay changes like Kirby Epic Yarn had.

        1. That’s the problem. Many people agree this is a rehash but say they’re still going to buy it. Don’t encourage Nintendo to keep making rehashes and give them sales. At least pick the game up used, so Nintendo won’t get the sale.

          1. Just because its a “rehash” doesnt mean it is fun, but i dont speak for everyone. There isnt going to be this massive strike whre no-one buys this game, but its sales will be less, amd Nintendo will hear and mos likely have already heard, people asking for something different.

            1. Yeah! SMW3!! With flying cape and tons of secret levels. The switch palaces and all stuff! If Ubisoft and Nintendo would team up to make the game I would go nuts!

  2. If I was a reviewer I would possibly give it 7,5 as highest…
It’s not that innovative as people makes it to be and collecting coins might be fun to some but to me it’s dull and boring…
The multiplayer aspect is fun I guess but take away the few new features and well, I don’t like the same as always easy bosses in mario…

    1. I myself would propably from what I’ve seen give it 8.3 or something. It’s a really good game as all Mario Platformers, but it will propably not be a classic.

  3. “As previously reported Famitsu gave the game the highest score with a near-perfect 36/40. Other publications such as CVG and 3D Juegos awarded the game a solid 8/10. New Super Mario Bros 2 currently has an 81 score on Metacritic.”

and where’s any of that mixed? an 81 score on metacritic is pretty good

  4. I was thinking of getting it but then I saw the 54 min gameplay of it and it just doesnt interest me anymore. I will get the Wii U verison but thats it until another 3D game

      1. What is my past self going on about? You should always support Nintendo. You should worship Nintendo! *throws flowers everywhere*

  5. I agree with the people who say it’s not mixed. 8 is NOT mixed. It’s a good score. For an instance, New Super Mario Bros. has an average score of 87 on Metacritic. I still wouldn’t say it’s mixed or bad, though. This title is very misleading.

  6. According to Metacritic:
    positive – 4, mixed – 0, negative – 0.

Not sure where that headline came from…?

  7. I wouldn’t be surprised by mixed reviews, it seems a bit gimmicky to be honest. The coin thing would be exciting for a special stage, but it seems like the whole game is just coins, coins, coins…. I’m still unsure how I feel about this game, but I’ll probably get it anyways.

  8. I don’t mean to say this mean, but I hope this game and NSMBU get terrible reviews and sell bad so Nintendo doesn’t make any more. Get as mad as you want, its the same game we been playing since NSMB on DS. To me, its just a cheap easy way out to get mega bucks. Its obvious this version doesn’t have near the effort the WiiU version will have put into it. I don’t get Nintendo. The company I used to think would dare togo extreme to please fans are starting to become more and more like Infinity Ward.

  9. Sickr, I respectfully disagree. I like the new super mario bros series, but lately, it’s been used too much without anything drastically new. Yes, you get new stuff here and there, but the heart of the game is the same. So at this point, I think most people aren’t surprised by a score of 8. In fact, most people might expect it. Nevertheless, 8 is still a good score.

  10. My past self sucks. My past self is like he’s been run over by a tractor and needs he’s head checking! DOWN WITH PAST AEOLUS!

        1. Triple fail. I thought I had all my crap in, and the comments weren’t posting. Then I realized I didn’t have my information in, so I entered and then commented thinking it would work. I guess they all posted later, because they didn’t show up at first. Oh well.

  11. Wait 8 out of 10 is now mixed reviews? Did the game review scale get even more broken when I wasn’t looking?

  12. I haven’t completed it yet, only played it for a few hours (the store I work at only got the shipment yesterday). I’d give it a 7/10 so far. It’s a good game, but not great. If you liked the first one you won’t hate this one but might be disappointed if you’re expecting innovative level design or something. For better or for worse they played it safe and put out a very competent platformer. Worth a rent at the very least.

It’s only real competitor is Rayman Legends, which won’t be released anytime soon.

    1. if rayman legends is anything like Rayman Origins, then no, Rayman was on a league of its own. The Mario games are good but they’ve been lacking challenge and have been way too short lately. they’ve been dumbed down.

if your a platformer fan and didn’t see that Origins was way better than the recent marios games, then you’re obviously kidding yourself (that last statement was directed at everyone)

      1. I agree with you, Rayman Origins was better in fluidity of controls, level design, graphics, level design, and quality of multiplayer. Legends is the only real competitor because…well, if it’s anything like Origins, then yeah Mario is beaten this round (probably not in sales though, unfortunately) I worded the end of my post quite badly, sorry.

  13. Aeolus, you make me sick! This is what I hate about arrogant Sony fans like you, always having to bash Nintendo fans as if it’s your damn life. This sort of shit is what makes me hate other Sony fans and you don’t see me doing the same thing. Both Nintendo and Sony, which I grew up with, are great companies who are innovative with their hardware/designs and had much third party support. Hell, the Play Station was originally a collaboration project between them. Like everyone is saying, go crawl back to your hater troll cave or be prepared for another expulsion. I had experience having flame wars with people like you, so this should’ve be a problem or can be avoided.

      1. I suuuuure hope they do.
But seriously, as much as I like Mario games, Nintendo has gone too far with the repetitive New series. We shouldn’t buy this; we should let them learn a lesson so we can get a true sequel to SMB3/SMW.

        1. Tell me, what’s your grand plan? What’s your reason for being her? To get banned over and over again? See how many times you can do it? Simply put, you’re spending hours and hours of a day, commenting here, only for a goal you already know of. Yeah, sounds like a great plan, chief.

I am Aeolus. I am so smart. I can troll…barely.

          1. Yeah, he’s only doing it for attention. Don’t mind him, he’s small. He thinks he’s so successful for making so many people mad, when in reality, eveybody looks at him as the major asshole/loser of this site.

  14. That’s not really mixed…..

    Mixed would be….well…a mix….of high and low scores…. an 8 isn’t bad….

  15. This looks exactly like a re-hash, 2D sidescrolling Mario is my favorite type of game ever, but this just has no innovation compared to SMB3 and Mario World. Nintendo could start by not having the same basic types of worlds (grass, desert, ice etc) and maybe add a huge overworld map like in Mario world, with crazy levels, secret power ups and varied game theme. If you have played Mario world, you’ll realize just how fun and original it was. Not this bland looking cop out (there aren’t even that many more coins!).
