Mass Effect 3 Wii U Developer Really Doesn’t Want To Screw Up

Mass Effect 3 Wii U developer Straight Right has explained that his team are extremely conscious about messing up such an established franchise with the Wii U version. The developer acknowledges that the Wii U GamePad gives the team something new to bring to the series, but concedes that there is always the possibility that things might not go as planned. The team says it’s ultimately about enhancing the original experience.

“We’re very conscious of not wanting to mess up. Given the level of expectation and the fact that we’re taking something which, on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and PC, was exceptionally good.”

“You look at the game and think ‘how could I possibly make this better?’ The Wii U gives you that opportunity with the GamePad. But first and foremost you say, ‘well, I don’t want to screw this up’.

“You want to replicate the experience on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as sympathetically as possible. But then you say, ‘how can I enhance this experience?’. We tried to get the game looking great and singing on Wii U, and then use the GamePad to complement this.”

  1. Well technically you already did by not making it 1080p, but whatever. I find it hard to believe you can screw up porting over a game, but i commend their effort into having new features in the game. If a shitty company can port a game over and add new interesting game features that make the game better, then people like Capcom, Konami ect have no excuse

        1. idk about the ps3 but no game on the 360 has EVER been in 720p HD its always sub-HD, probably only exclusives for the ps3 games that are hd aswell

      1. Well the ps3 is 720p but the 360 is sub-HD, but the fact is they clearly dont know how to use a system properly, if Ubisoft can do 1080p easily, it just shows that the games got a bit wasted potential.

        1. 360 is not “sub HD”, do your research you fucking idiot. In fact, both consoles have outputted a few games at 1080p NATIVELY.

For whatever fucking reason this site prevents me from posting the thread with ALL known resolutions the HD consoles library are running at, I’ll never know. Just go on Beyond3D forums, you’ll easily find the info.

          1. Actually I did some research and found that the PS3 and Xbox 360 run at 720p natively and only a small margen of PS3/360 games can run at 1080p.

The Wii U on the other hand runs games at native 1080p with only a few 720p games that have been announced, most of which are by Nintendo (Some by Ubisoft as well).

            1. There are only two known games on Wii U running at 1080p. Toki Tori and fucking Scribblenauts. Everything else is 720p.

RESEARCH, FAGGOT. DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IT?

              1. Rayman legends is 1080p. and llikely others to be confirmed.

ubisoft producer said the console can easily maintain 1080p 60fps on the tv , whilst running 60fps on the gamepad in what ever resoloution the gamepad is.

launch titles are NOTORIOUSLY horrible looking.

ridge racer 6 on 360 from 2005 looks worse than most wii games for example. no joke.

give it 1 year , and the wiiu will blow us all away.

like the 3ds did with resident evil

                1. I beg your pardon? In previous generations people pushed the hardware very damn well on launch. Ever take a look at Gamecube? Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin were launch titles and even later in the console’s lifespan they were some of the best looking on there. Saying “notoriously horrible looking” doesn’t mean shit. It’s not an excuse. but regardless, it shouldn’t matter because 360, PS3, and Wii launch games didn’t look terible either. Realistic != good graphics. Art style matters more imo.

                  1. the gamecube is the ONLY console i can think of in history which its launch titles hold up. even then , metroid prime (2) and resident evil 4 came along and blew the launch titles away.

                    rogue squadron was pretty though.

most other consoles the launch games look like shit.
launch games typically are the worst showcase of what the console is capable of .

compare ridge racer 6 and forza 4 on 360.
nothing at the wii’s launch demonstrated it’s graphics.
red steel looked like crap and twilight princess was a gamecube game. (which was beautifull btw).

now i am begging your pardon , launch games arent an example of a console’s full potential .

                    1. Did I SAY full potential? I’m saying they can still push it and that it doesn’t need to look ‘realistic’ to look ‘good.’ There is a HUGE line between a game with a bunch of textures and a game that has a nice look to it. Some games try too hard to look ‘realistic’ while others use a particular style and it looks very pretty. Since we were using gamecube as an example: Windwaker. It doesn’t look even close to realistic, but it’s the most stylized game in the zelda franchise and one of the most technically advanced, too. It looks pretty and fits the style of the game. THAT is what matters. How you present the feel of the game. Imagine if you took Metroid prime and made it super cutesy and bright. it doesn’t work, does it? Or what if we took Kirby and made it highly realistic and horrifying. It just doesn’t potray how the game really is. I don’t know if I’m getting the point acress, but I’m basically trying to say that even if the games do look ‘better’ it doesn’t mean the old ones look like shit. Graphics don’t get ‘outdated’ or stop looking fresh when they’re done right.

                  2. i agree with your comment below which doesnt have a reply button.

my point is , the wiiu will look like a different console in 2 years time :) . the ports like mass effect are definately the worst example of the wiiu considering they are 360 games :/.

rayman legends already looks better than this Gen.
in 2 years time we will look back at the launch ports and say ”those graphics are embarassing for the wiiu”.
developers +more knowledge = better graphics

                    1. yeah, i think we’ve got a grip on what we’ve been trying to communicate now. Yes, I agree that eventually they’ll look poor compared to others, but I still see the best graphics as being the ones that potray the game so well that it feels fresh playing it for the first time. 3D has a harder time with this than 2D obviously given early 3D honestly looks extremely dated with the blocky polygons. The 6th generation had a good start on solidifying 3d graphic styles into history, especially with gamecube launch games.

                1. You’re a faggot too, the slang usage of it by the way, since you’re clearly too retarded to figure out what exactly it was being used as.

          2. Very few games, that arent technical monsters, at all, in fact a few thats actually shovelware, thats for both 360 and ps3.

But Rayman and Assassins Creed and running at 1080p on the WiiU, as CONFIRMED by ubisoft.

              1. the developer said the other day ”the wiiu can display 1080p 60fps whilst streaming to the gamepad at the sametime”.
this is the developer of rayman legends. he isnt saying the wiiu can do this but i havent. he is implying that rayman legends runs 1080p 60fps on tv whilst 60fps on the gamepad at the same time.
same article where he said the wiiu’s memory is enormous and almost has no limitation’s .

do us all a favour and remove the butt plug.

  2. LOLWUT? COME ON! This is what the gaming industry was ALL ABOUT before this generation of gaming! TAKING. RISKS. Be different. it’s not a problem. Itkeeps things fresh and if people don’t like it, try something else or go back to the old formula. The problem is when you constantly repeat mistakes. SOMETHING needs to change or else it just gets boring.

    1. Wow, somebody with some sense. ‘Bout time.
I really wish companies in not only the games industry, but the film industry as well would listen to more to people like this guy.

  3. Straight Right better best step correct on making Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U a great and unique game as well as taking advantage of using the Game Pad. Especially when playing the game either along with your HDTV while using the map location and switching weapons on the Game Pad or play the game ON the Game Pad anywhere around the house.

  4. How comes you haven’t got a like button? I couldn’t see it anywhere.. Great post you have done on the game. I normally only go for the best shoot em ups and Mass Effect 3 does look like it’s going to be as good as the last game was.

  5. The game looks pretty good so far. We’ll have to wait and see the end product before I judge. Leave luck to heaven.

  6. The fact that the dev team is express their awareness of everything possibly going wrong is actually a good sign for this port.

  7. Well its better to worry about something and do something about it than just leaving it and releasing a pile of shit game which has like 30 billion bugs in it… *cough* Skyrim *cough*

    1. I had an interview with Bethesda for my senior project in highschool. They claimed they only program for about a year while the planning can go on for an many as three or four. I wish it was the other way around because Betheda has AMAZING ideas… but they’re nothing more than ideas because they don’t take the time to actually program properly. There’s no shame in taking extra time to make something great.

EVERYONE can learn from that, however. Even Nintendo. For example, The reason some of their consoles/portables failed or lacked was due to rushing things out and/or sticking to their ‘console every 5 years’ tradition. Confused? an example:

The Virtual Boy as we know it was INCOMPLETE. Yokoi, maker of Metroid, Kid Icarus, the Gameboy, and co-director of many early nintendo games was rushed with his project so that more focus could be put on the Nintendo 64. Because of this, he quit Nintendo. They lost a hardware GENIUS because of rushing and a console with extreme potential had become a commercial failure due to pulling it out of the market before their 3rd party supporters could figure out the source code.

    2. True on Bethesda. I loved Fallout 3 but i cant even play that game again because of the looming possibility that it could freeze at any moment…

        1. I know -.-
Bethesda are terroble when it comes to coding, thats why the ps3 hasnt even got the Slyrim DLC (allegedly), they just suck ass and making the games work properly

          1. Now Gearbox on the other hand, they know how to make a console game whilst also giving PC gamers their own gameplay mechanics instead of directly porting the game straight from the consoles to the PC.

            1. Yeah, although everyone blames them for Duke Nukem -.- but forgets they make Borderlands. I hope Borderlands 2 comes to WiiU, im holding out on it in case it does, for now

              1. Actually it wasn’t their fault that DNF failed. It was passed around like the village bicycle and ended up when it was Gearbox’s turn the bicycle was destroyed beyond repair.

I don’t blame them for that, plus, they made such great games in the passed years.

                1. I know, i wasntsaying it was their fault,i knowit was, but people still blame them.looking forward to Aliens amd Borderlands 2, but jopethey move onto a non-shootergame next

        1. I had an interview with the guy in charge of Sony and he said, and I quto.

“I had a blast working with a shit company like Sony, making the PS3 non-backwards compatible with the PS2 games was a great idea.”

“Though have to say the xbox 360 is a better console and that Wii U looks like the bomb, I can’t wait to leave this shit hole of a company and move on”

As you can see from that the creator of Sony hated the company and he also told me that you like to suck a big fat one… because he said you where in his office giving him a quicky.

Also, the only reason why Monster Hunter was on PS3 because DERP and no because fans wanted it on that system.

Now, sit back as a I make the most long winded argument that won’t even make a lick of sense and have nothing to do with this article and I will brag about how my teacher gave me an A++ on this because I sucked her vag dry.

BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH I have a huge ego BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH PC is the worst BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH I like to read lil miss rarity whilst spanking myself with a rusty chainsaw BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH I have a boner for monkeys BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH Bethesda can’t make a game right BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH… DERP.

              1. I already did. Not bad but… a little… sorry a lot more darker and sexual then I was expecting it to be.

Meh, its okay… still a better story than Twilight.

                1. And wait, isn’t the whole point of MLP: FiM about “Friendship”? So why segregate the cloppers? sure they fap/clop to a little girls show but hey, that’s them so we should all just love and tolerate eachother.

Much like how I started to be happy towards trolls and not giving into their hateful comments.

  8. This is some of the best news to hear. It’s great when companies understand that the gamepad is there not as something mandatory, but as a cool way to offer new methods of control. Therefore, if you have good ideas, put them on, but if you’re just doing something for the sake of it, it will almost never turn out well.

    1. I agree with the Chill guy. Tacked-on control schemes are usually awful. Genuinely attempting to get your game to work well with different controler options is a ton of work, but enjoyable for a lot more people if you pull it off well.

  9. Mass effect on stfU will have only 1 bit memory so yes the graphics will be horrible AND THE XBOX WILL BE FLOWLESS!

    1. Ailos's pee pee is to small for sex

the wiiu has mazing memory actually. it leaves the xbox in a trail of shit.

you shoudl buy de Ouya. it will suit you more chroll .

  10. I say use the wii u gamepad as a actual real time omni-tool. As well as the biotecs and weapons wheel interface. nothing shoudl appear onf the television if game is in use..all menu items and such should appear in our hands and we can use built in camera and gyrpscope to scan for artifacts and elements, and apply medigels. ALSO our personal comm link. that would be awesome to receive messages from the illusive man directly on the game pad.

    1. WHY NOT ALL THE ABOVE BUT WHILST PLAYING WII REMOTE AND CHUCK AND HAVE THE GAMEPAD AT BASE OF TV IN A CRADLE

YES YOU GUESSED RIGHT A “”””REAL”””” CORE GAMER JUST POSTED

  11. Did you guys hear from 3ds blog and news, there is going to be more conduit news before the end of 2012.FUCK YEA!!!!

  12. CAN PS3 FANS SHUT THE F**K UP EVERYONE KNOWS MASS EFFECT 3 ON PS3 RUNS LIKE POO AND IS TWICE AS SMELLY ITS LITERATELY UNPLAYABLE ON THAT FORMAT FAN THAT YOU NEED MEDS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS A PORT IT WILL BE = TO X360 MAYBE AHEAD GET OVER YO SELVES
