‘Nintendo Is Creative But Sony And Microsoft Have Little Incentive To Be’

Rodney Greenblat, the lead designer of Parappa the Rapper and Wii game Major Minor’s Majestic March, believes that Nintendo are the kings of creativity, and that both Sony and Microsoft lag behind the Kyoto based company. Greenblat went on to say that developers are prepared to take risks with their intellectual properties, but consumers aren’t prepared to buy into them.

“I don’t find any lack of creativity in the game makers, but there is a lack of creativity in the game buyers. I think developers would like to make a wide range of interesting games, but they are difficult to sell, so they don’t get made. So it is a problem of economics.”

“The question really becomes how to open up video gaming to a wider audience,” Greenblat continued, “Nintendo works on this question 24/7. Playstation and Xbox have little incentive to do that. The frontier right now is phones and tablets, but once again it comes down to the buyers.”

“What are people willing to pay for a game on a phone or tablet? Will these fees generate enough income for the publishers and developers? I hope so.”

    1. Really? I’ve had fun with Gravity Rush, Sound Shapes and most of their ips, Plus their new IP that just got announce are some of the most original things I’ve seen in a while.

      1. Is that the game on the vita with the cardboard art style? After playing sound shapes and watching that video of the new game almost made me want to get a vita.

  1. “What are people willing to pay for a game on a phone or tablet? Will these fees generate enough income for the publishers and developers? I hope so.”

The answer to that is a resounding no so far. The most successful phone/tablet games (so basically, Angry Birds), don’t get close to making as much money as the most successful home console/handheld games, and it’s not like the costs are scaling up that much on consoles to account for the massive chasm.

  2. Talk about confusing wording.
So…basically Sony and Microsoft customers are boring? Well, cant argue with that. Duno what phones has to do with it..oh, nothing? Yeah i thought so

Im sorry, what does being creative have to do with economics? Its just gamers are stupid, and youve been feeding them the same shite for years that now theyre brainwashed into thinking that the “be all end all”, but its okay, because they make money.
      Fucking disgrace.

      1. Creativity has to with economics because people want to buy stuff that they feel safer with. If you already know a brand of shoes are good, why risk buying new shoes from another company? We’ll just have to wait for time that people will have more money to spend, or the prices of games go down (On consoles, PC’s already have lowered prices.).

      2. In all honesty, both the consumer and Publisher are to blame. The lack of creativity in some games aren’t the developers fault in most part, but the publishers that don’t let them expand their creative mind, and just to cash in on what’s currently cool. That beign said, the consumer that buys all these bland games are at fault as well.

      3. What I thought is that this is bad wording on Sickr’s part. He didn’t say Sony and Microsoft were uncreative regarding games, he just said that they aren’t trying to branch out their audiences.

  3. well you have to admit. games on phones and tablets evolves constantly from a crappy childrens game to a console-type worthy games. yes it is a problem of economics, people tend to be more economical of using their phone for web browsing, messaging and games instead of buying a seperate one for only playing games. both sony and microsoft have products in the phone/tablet era. it is now up to nintendo if they would still stick to its beliefs or join the race as well (create games for these types of gadget) or even produce its own type of tablet since nintendo is well known for its innovations compared to a trigger-happy-sue-all-of-them company.

  4. So basically he is saying people really dont want to play any real games and just want the same cod bullshit over and over and dont want to play any game with a real heart to it. Its a damn shame, gaming is turning into shit because of people like that and now video game makers are scared of making something unique because of that , but that is why we have our beloved nintendo for!!

      1. Im just saying nintendo is the only one that has a broader selection of unique games its hard not to see that im not hating on other consoles, i own and like all 3 for fucks sakes i like little big planet as much as i like forza.

  5. I think he’s right about that. Gamers are not willing to take risks on new software. Hopefully the Wii U can breathe new life into the console gaming industry and address these issues. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Honestly, it all comes down to the WiiU. If it doesnt move the industry in the proper direction then it’s over for the gaming market

          1. how the fuck is it false idols? handheld gaming is completely different to pc gaming. think u need get ur head checked and get over it! we all want Nintendo and we want it now!

    1. LMFAO! Microsoft is going to die cause windows 8 is cheap crap and I hope to god Android takes over operating systems. MICROSOFT IS WANK!!!!

    2. I don’t know why I’m replying to you, as you’ll reply back, but…

While Microsoft’s PCs are very good systems, and are best for playing PC games, Microsoft’s PC’s are way more vulnerable to viruses, meaning broken computer. Apple’s Macintosh?

Almost none (I think, I don’t know much about computers.)

Same with Xbox 360 and Wii.

Back in 2006, there were many broken Xbox 360s because of it’s 2005 release.

      The Wii, not so.

      Just saying.

      1. actually there are viruses for mac’s and its damn hilarious because their virus’s are 10x worse than microsoft…you know why? cause all the dumb fucks believe it isn’t hackable and have no virus protection

      2. Apple simply does not have a tool to find viruses lol. They are there and you have almost no way of getting rid of them. Every thing connected to the Internet can get a virus even your phone. Stop repeating these myths it makes you look like some one that needs to be over charged.

  6. Maybe if games didn’t cost so much, consumers would be more willing to take risks in their purchases, and try new and creative things. Really, they have only themselves to blame.

  7. I remember when daring to be creative got Nintendo in trouble. It was when Wind Waker’s cell- shaded art style was revealed. I could not beLIEVE all the crying so-called Zelda fans were doing. And it wound up being (to me) the most amazing Zelda I’ve ever played (to be fair, I only played OOT, MM, WW, and TP).
Even if you take a daring approach and you’re 100% right, the consumer/ ‘fans’ have to like it or you’ll never see it again. And that’s a shame.

      1. As much as I can’t say I am a huge fan of LoZ (although don’t get me wrong, I still like it) but wind waked was the first legend of zelda game I played ‘properly’. And it was really good! I have been a nintendo fan since I was 5 and I don’t intend to leave them. My bro owns a PS3, and as much as I enjoy it, there really are only a few really creative games (LBP obviously, and modnation racers was incredible) but most are same old same old… I think this more so for Xbox though… All I hear about Xbox HALO, HALO, HALO… I’ve played the god damn thing and it’s ok for a day then it’s just old… Square enix somehow still entertain me though, with bravely default next year!!!

  8. sony will make the playpad and micro the xpad and claim innovation and the industry will acknowledge this because of pure favortism only a moron would truly believe that sonysoft is on nintendo’s level every playbox game would of been better on wii

    1. Says the ass hurt graphics whore who doesn’t know jackshit about innovation. Nintendo is the king of innovating video games. Sony (losing $6.4 billion and laying off over 20,000 employees) and Microsoft are just wannabes.

  9. aka. People buying the same old crap. However, yes nintendo is always on the front for new innovated ideas and that is part of why i like the company. The other is they make damn good games.

  10. I love Nintendo. But creating the wii u isn’t creative. From a specs point it’s not innovative or creative. Now if you look at the controller aka a tablet. It’s disheartening because I’m not gonna take it to bed when I have a girlfriend. Now don’t get me wrong Xbox and play station arnt doing jack either. But Nintendo claiming they are more innovative because they can bump up specs and add a tablet for a controller all to an old generation system is like a politician getting the facts wrong. 9 out of 10 gamers I have asked (asked well over 100 and a lot of nintendo fanboys btw) think the same aka it’s just a wii with an upgrade. Where’s the innovation and creativity about that.

    1. Coming from a PRETENDO reject who doesn’t know spit about innovation. Nintendo wants to create a brand new game system that revolutionize the way we play games. If you look at the Wii U Game Pad, it can do a lot of things the ordinary controllers don’t have. Touchscreen, built-in camera and mic, play games on the ‘Pad, gyroscope and asymmetric gameplay, and Near Field Communications technology. You can even socialize with friends and family using their own social networking known as Miiverse. Nintendo is using innovation in not only games, but also for social gaming and entertainment. They want to make a system suitable for casuals, intermediate, hardcore, and passionate gamers no matter what age, race, or gender.

      1. As much as I like what the WIIU offers, and I’m a nintendo fanboy, I plan to get a vita for Christmas. I have had thoughout the years: a sega mega drive, master system, GBA SP, DS lite (broken hinge after 6/7years), DSi, PS3 (my brothers), PSP (my bro’s, but we sold it after it lost the ability to save after one drop) , PS2, GameCube (dog chewed TV/AV wires), GBC, 3DS and a WII (had it for about 6 years now i think) with a broken disc drive… But i still prefer nintendo. All of the consoles I mentioned (without note of their damages) work fine still. Even the mega drive and GBC. But nintendo has entertained me forever and I WILL get the WIIU, I’m just biding my time. My B-Day Is jab 31st, so if price drops after initial dash I can grab one cheaper. But this Christmas, sony will give me 2 or 3 games for a while… Then I get bored :3
