Pachter Claims Nintendo Will Cut Wii U Price In 2013

Michael Pachter is of the opinion that Nintendo will reduce the price of the Wii U sometime during next summer. Pachter said that pricing will be too high to sustain demand given current competition from other consoles and tablets. He went on to say that Nintendo were smart to introduce the Wii U at higher price points in order to maximize initial sales from its core audience.

“We think that Wii U’s price points are appropriate given likely demand from Nintendo’s core fanbase, but believe that pricing will be too high to sustain demand given current competition from other consoles and tablets,” he said in a research note.

“In our view, Nintendo was smart to introduce the Wii U at higher price points in order to maximize initial sales from its core audience. We expect 1 – 1.5 million Wii U units to be shipped into the US by the end of GameStop’s fiscal year (January),

“We expect demand from Nintendo’s core fan base to remain high through the end of its March 31 fiscal year. Once initial demand begins to subside, we expect Nintendo to lower prices

“We don’t expect a price cut until summer 2013, at the earliest, but do expect a cut prior to holiday 2013. Any prospective price cut will depend largely on competition, which we expect to materialize in the coming weeks.”

  1. $250 and $300 ……………. I don’t think this will happen next year though , maybe the year after. The price is absoloutly spot on the way it is . And nintendo is probably going to profit off every console sold…

    1. The US pricing is probably one of the best. The rest of the world… That’s something else. $350 – $430 in Australia is not sustainable, when compared to the current consoles available.

        1. Don’t forget that sultry Patcher man!! He is my love!! His pumpkin noodle pie is so sustainable and great for usui Takumi!!!!

          Yes.

  2. aeoluslikestosuckoffmonkeydicksandthemonkeyisicydeadpeopleandtheyalsoseemtobeidiots

And the old Pachter is back. Now to the old way of things, is he demented, it’s a next gen system (I see you looking at this comment Aeolus and co.), a PS3 is about the price of a Deluxe version, so why should they sell better hardware for less?

      1. You are not folowing the math…

        Prices from Best Buy:
        PS3 – 160GB Console, Controller, Headset & HDMI Cable Package = $299.96

        PS3 – 320GB with PlayStation Move Bundle = $349.99

        PS3 – 320GB Move Bundle, Controller, Charger & HDMI Cable Package = $449.96

        Wii U basic = $299.99
        Wii U “deluxe” = $349.99

Why Patcher thinks that Nintendo (with a better hardware) will drop the price of Wii U?

That’s why the old Pachter is back….

        1. Dude, it’s what happens everytime to every console for the past 2 generations. Even Nintendo did this with the Wii, and it was the cheapest of the 3 consoles. It won’t be a MASSIVE price drop, but it’ll still be notable. I think that’s what Int means.

          1. No, the Wii never had a price-drop in less than a year. The old Patcher is back because he’s predicting the console to drop in price less than a year on the market. Ask yourself this, why would Nintendo drop the price of the system in less than a year?

    1. Nah, he’s more neutral here. He says the Wii U will pretty much sell like hotcakes for a little bit, but at the same time the price will need to be lowered. And considering we’re supposed to be seeing Microsoft or Sony announcing their next console in 2013, that’s not surprising.

  3. Nintendo never did it with the Wii. Considering Wii U is expected to have a better launch than Wii, I’m not sure how or why they’d still drop the price.

Still buying it as early as possible.

  4. This would be foolish of them to do (3DS craze all over again) but as someone who has limited moneys, I just want a lower price.

  5. Makes sense, besides 2013 is a long year, they will without a doubt drop the price for Christmas 2013. The only question is, is the $50 savings worth waiting? For some the answer will be yes for others no. TVii was a pretty big surprise, it could be a big deal for the casual crowd, considering that a logitech harmony remote with a really crappy lcd screen will run you anywhere from $100 to $300 CAD

    1. I like the TVii thing, whenever i have to watch TV, i constantly have to change the output cable, them if i go on netflix, i need to go online, and the same with youtube, i like that its all going to be in one place, and combining it, so all the options are there together

        1. It’ll be in other countries , eventually, but you sure its an exclsuive straight away? We get Tivo with Virgin Media, and of course Netflix and Hulu

    2. Definitly don’t makes sense, if you search at Best Buy, for example, the prices of PS3 are between $299.96 and $449.96, why Nintendo with a better hardware will lower the price of a better hardware? But if Nintendo do this, I will be glad…

          1. Oh, well that’s just a Best Buy package. I mean, it’s a 320 GB PS3 with two PS Moves, a charging station, a game, PS Eye camera, HDMI cable, and all that.

The standard systems are $249.99 for the 160 GB system and $299.99 for the 320 GB systems (which are usually bundled with a game).

Retailers always make their own bundles that aren’t related to the packages from the manufacturer.

  6. Doubt it, at least not for next year, maybe 2014, but not in their first year, its unneccessary when theres no competition. If people dont own a os3/360, they see the WiiU is not much more, price wise, its just been released, so its going to be supported for a good 5-7 years, at least, not to mention, you get the controller ect, its a good price. And you can bet, the ps4/720 will cost over $350, and if its not, the “jump” in graphics is going to be even smaller.
MS and Sony are in a very tough position right now.

  7. Here’s probably the closest thing to what Nintendo (and even then it’s not even close) is offering with TVii – Logitech Harmony remote at Bestbuy:

    http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/logitech-harmony-1100-universal-remote-control-915-000075/10120093.aspx?path=7902c362809a30dce83df4bb1ce60783en02

It’s $349 for just a remote!!! If I was nintendo I would be jumping all over this. It’s a huge marketing op for all the dummies out there buying those devices.

    1. I have the harmony ONE remote, well I actually bought it for my dad but it was $399AUS when it came out but we use it for everything that has a remote. The good thing about logitech is they have a big online database for thousands of different devices (not just tv’s). But along with that, I also use my samsung galaxy as a tv remote but when I do get the WiiU it will be replacing that

      1. if i was nintendo i would get rid of these humilliated games like gaymario and i would create games exlusive for hardcore gamers

  8. It’s possible but I think it wouldn’t happen and it might be a dumb move to drop the price that early unless it isn’t selling well

    1. This.

But we will have to wait and see. I think it’s at a good reasonable and competitive price. If someone sees a brand new, next-gen console for $299 and a six-year old console for the same price, people are likely to eat up the new tech over the old.

I’m confident the Wii U will do well, especially at the current price, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see to know for SURE.

  9. I think they might drop the price for stuff like the extra game pad, hdmi cable (seeing as though the premium edition gets one, I think they might sell it as an option for the basic users), pro controllers etc.

    1. He’s an analyst who comments on various video games-related stuff. He comments on all of the Big 3 but this site only posts the Nintendo stuff, since this is a Nintendo-based site of course.

He’s right just as often as he is wrong imo, considering all he does is base claims off actual trends in the industry. Like this one for example. Of course Nintendo amped up the price a little on launch, all companies do that and then cut it shortly after a holiday season or something. This site is fueled by buttmad fanboys raging about something though, and since no one actually reads articles round here Pachter is a good source of fuel…

  10. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to foresee a price cut. Nintendo did it with the 3DS when they realized the price point was too high after sales started to suffer. The Wii U will probably go to where the original Wii was when it was released in 2006, at $249.99, in my opinion.

  11. 300-350 its a great price imo, besides the 3DS and the Vita, there arent any new consoles so my guess is that people can afford buying this while waiting a year or 2 for the next MS or Sony console.

though i just bought my 3DS XL (200 + 3 games = 300 or so) im still with some money left, so i will get this, not on launch, but maybe february or march, nevertheless i want to get the WiiU as fast as possible so i can start saving up again for the new Xbox/PS console… wich should come out on 2014 if im right

  12. Yes this is true they will have to cut the price, as i and many people i know cant justify spending $300 on a console

    Bottom line:
I hate to say it but i agree with patcher :(

      1. TheUnation, can you stop being so offensive to the people who ,in there opinion, don’t like A COUPLE of nintendo’s systems. For trolls i understand because they are annoying but reply to them a little less because that is why the trolls come back.

  13. hi there he is sooo wrong we cant wait till 2013 we waied to long we want wii u now not 2013 we dont care if we pay more too get wii u now

  14. they wont lower prices but they well just offer more with thr system, start including nintendo land and a SD card with the basic model. and maybe a free download game for the delux model.
