Industry analyst Michael Pachter has looked at todays financial reports that were provided by Nintendo and unsurprisingly he doesn’t agree with them. Pachter says that the projected Wii U hardware figures were disappointing and that the Wii U software guidance is simply unrealistic.
“Nintendo has guided to Wii U hardware sales of only 5.5 million units in FY:13, below the 6 – 7 million that we had previously expected. In addition, guidance for 24 million Wii U software units in FY:13 implies an attach rate of over four games, which we view as highly unrealistic given pricing and release slate. Wii U will fight for holiday wallet share with the existing consoles (which have the bulk of their most compelling releases in the December quarter), Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, and Apple’s iPad Mini, among a slew of other devices.”
“The launch schedule is better than we had initially expected, with notable launch day titles including Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II, EA Sports’ FIFA Soccer 13, Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land, and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III and ZombiU. However, demand will probably wane once Nintendo’s core fan base has purchased the first 5 – 6 million units, negatively impacting long-term hardware and software sales as well.”

Unfortunately, I also agree with him. We still have yet to see a string advertisement. While they’re safe in Japan, specially because of the brand and the amount of core gamers, in the entire world (including Japan) there’s a lack of advertisement and news on internet. All we have are rumors, and most of them only say things we’re not pleased to hear, such as the Miiverse not being included at day one (And we haven’t heard any official words regarding this, yet).

I do a lot of work on a macmini, and i love it, imovie and logic, to pieces, but no one seems to care about anything but the portable stuff.
Hell, they openly gave snowleopard away on a 2 dollar update disc and next to no one even knows what that is, much less why thats pretty cool.

They’ve already tried making a console: the apple pippin. It was a commercial failure, wiki it if u want to find out about, but at this point in time it seems plausible. However, apple’s current market for gaming is basically arcade type-like gaming, so the huge apple community (and appstore developers) would either have to adjust to the console-style games, which would definitely limit the existing fanbase. With major third party support, they could maybe be successful. Only time will tell.

By March, if Pikmin 3 and Rayman are released, i wouldve bought about 8-9 games, not including eShop titles.
Nintendo are right in predicting a lower amount that originally expected. If they have too much confidence, it could hit them in the face, but if the demand is higher than they expect, they can react quickly, so its good that they’ve gone for a safe number.
As for the price, for the love of all that exists, does this guy even have a brain? Ps1, Ps2, wii, wiiu: ALL $250-300!!

Complain about what you want, but the Wii U has a bargain price that any holiday shopper would totally melt for, it is launching with MANY AAA-titles from both Nintendo and its third-parties, and the launch window is so rich, I can’t imagine one gamer being left out of the equation during the launch window period.
For the first time in a console launch, there are going to be games that are absolute MUST-HAVES. Why wouldn’t there be a high attach rate to coincide with that? Most “casual” shoppers, such as parents buying gifts for their kids, buy anything with Mario on it. Nintendo Land is included in the packaging, which would also count as a game as well. Then, considering that the parents want to keep with the Wii tradition, Wii Fit U is a major seller as well. So on and so forth. Not going into TOO much detail here because we all know how rich the Wii U launch is compared to any other console or portable system launch in the history of video games.
Why do you think the Wii U preorders sold out worldwide so fast to begin with? I won’t be surprised if it becomes THE best Nintendo console ever made in terms of first-party games, third-party support, innovation that it brings to the gaming industry as a whole, and the idea of a gaming social network.
Miiverse and the Wii U GamePad are both major selling points, and I can’t wait to see how the console will be advertised on television and across the Internet. Paired up with the Nintendo 3DS, it is going to be one heck of a major blow out this holiday season. Let’s hope we get the Pikachu-themed Nintnedo 3DS XL in time for Black Friday (in fact, that may be IGN’s upcoming announcement this Thursday) in North America.

Also, whem I was browsing the Nintendo 3DS website to come to a final decision on whether or not to purchase a Nintendo 3DS XL, I just noticed something at this Nintendo America page for the Nintendo 3DS. It seems as if the Nintendo 3DS has had its Aqua Blue and Flame Red variations discontinued in the states due to the Nintendo 3DS XL being available in Blue and Red. My guess is that this is to avoid consumers from thinking that the Nintendo 3DS XL is the same Aqua Blue/Flame Red Nintendo 3DS variations.

I wouldn’t expect sales to drop off that rapidly. In one sense they will, just because the holiday season is over, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t have good, steady sales. In the long term, I’m sure they’ll be fine. You know, sense they pretty much always are.
However, i will agree that those software sales are unrealistic. People won’t buy 3-4 games on average by march if their estimate of 5.5 for hardware is correct. Of course, if they exceed that estimate, then the 24mil for software becomes more reasonable.
As for fighting with current consoles… technically yes it will be. But never underestimate how much people want the new thing. And at the current prices, you’d have to be a fool to buy a current gen console over the Wii U. Even the most uneducated consumer understands the difference between old tech that won’t be supported in a year or two, and new tech that will be supported for at least 5-6 years.
I just pre-ordered a Wii U and so did a buddy just for Zombie U, mainly. But I did buy a 3DS as well last year. Im not a Nintendo fanboy, I just buy stuff that looks great and worth the price. So there goes this guy’s theory. I also own an Xbox and Ps3.
