Sony: It’s Too Early To Talk About The End Of This Console Generation

Although the Wii and PlayStation 3 released roughly six years ago, Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, says it’s too early to talk about the end of the current generation of video game consoles. However, Nintendo will be launching the first next generation video game console, the Wii U, on November 18th, which is less than two weeks away.

“The life of consoles is also extended by services online, which continue to make a new offer cloud and new social functions. It is therefore too early to talk about the end of this generation of consoles.”

      1. I don’t think its late to not bring a new system to the market this is to long its not werth wating its all ways the same thing 4 years was a long enugh this is to long to not have new systems fuck sony snd a 10 years life span

    1. I will explain what happened here….

They say its too Early because they are NOW starting to plan out their new consoles and you know why? because they were and are still waiting to see what Nintendo’s Wii U is bringing to the table so they can copy Nintendo’s ideas as they ALWAYS DO! so now you all know why Sony says its too early to talk bout next gen consoles.

Fact is that if you think about it Sony and Microsoft are always behind… they are always waiting for nintendo to make the first jump like they did with the Wii, then why then see that Nintendo is doing great ( and of course Nintendo innovating and risking their asses ) Then they say oh ok its safe to jump now… we will just copy what nintendo is doing and we will obviously have the that small success we need to gain a bit of profits…

Yup copycats So there you have your answer.

      1. GET RAPE BY A PACK OF SAVAGE NEGROS! XBOX CAME FIRST TWICH YOU BITCH ITS SHITENDO THAT COPY XBOX AFTER IT WAS RELEASED! WERE DO YOU LIVE I WANT TO FUCKING KILL YOU AND RAPE YOUR MOTHER MULTIPLE TIMES

        1. XBOX CAME FIRST?!?!??! YOU KNOW SHIT BOUT HISTORY COME HERE YOU MOTHER FUCKER IM GOING TO KICK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU THEN GET A HORDE OF WALRUSES TO FKING ASS RAPE YOU PIECE OF SHIT I HOPE THEY CUM INSIDE YOU AND GET YOU FKING PREGNANT YOU USELESS PIECE OF MONKEY DOUBLEDECKER SHIT!

          1. OBVIOUSLY MY COMMENT GOT YOUR BUTTHOLE DRIPPING AS FCK THE WALRUSES ARE WAITING BITCH! GET YOUR ASS HERE PRONTO!

        2. Holy shit, you need some serious anger management… actually scratch that, they should just lock you in an insane asylum right away. Nintendo made video games like 20 years before the first Xbox came, but you wouldn’t know that of course, since you’re 10 years old at most.

    2. Eh, I have to agree with them. The Wii,though very fresh, did feel like it was half a generation behind. Nintendo’s just stepping up to the current generation and the way I see think, I don’t see this generation ending anytime soon.

  1. Sony news on My Nintendo News again. >.<

Anyway, it is a bit to early to talk about the "end" of this current gen, but you can also start talking about the next gen. Just because the next-gen starts for some, it doesn't mean that the current gen has to immediately stop for all.

The PS2 was still widely supported well into the PS3's launch.

    Back to Ninty news:

Meanwhile, Pachter says that the Wii U is last-gen

    http://gamerxchange.net/2012/11/05/pachter-wii-u-a-new-console-using-last-gen-technology/

    1. I have to say, the parts of that article about patcher I do agree with is that Nintendo should put there GBA games and that on mobiles. They’d make a fortune. I know I’d be buying every single on of them.

      Or…. they could just hurry up and release it on VC on 3DS! ;~;

      1. Yeah, it’s been long enough. Doesn’t really seem fair to those of us who didn’t buy a 3DS at the beginning. Exclusivity over a year is way more than enough.

        1. That and the fact there are so many games they could put on there. Like the old pokemon games I desperately want to see on there, why the heck doesn’t Nintendo do it? They’d make shit loads.

        2. Loving Metroid 4 (Fusion)!!!!

Sorry, didn’t mean to gloat, maybe I did. I’m an ass. An ass playing GBA Games! Yippee Ky A!

    2. Who gives a fucking shit what Pachter think ?? Does he know the specific specs of wiiu ??? Cus it Almost certainly isn’t using Last Gen tech. I mean what the fuck is the gamepad ???? Is that something the ps3 and 360 have had for years now ???

What a load of ass hurt horse shit again from Pachter.

Also it sounds to me as if Sony are butthurt. Their fucking console is a RAM bottleneck. How long is a typical console generation anybody ?? 5-6 years typically. So Nintendo are the only ones sticking to tradition whilst Sony are trying to Rinse the Flannel which is the ps3.

They said recently they want the ps vita to last 10 years !!!!! I LOL’D The succesor to the succesor of the 3ds will be out by then!!!!!

Good luck to them overlaping typical Generation cycles , I expect the 720 out this time next year.

      1. You say Sony sounds “butthurt” but the way you write your statements make it sound like you’re the one suffering some sort of discomfort from their statement.

The PSOne, PS2, and PSP all had very long life cycles. There’s no reason the PS3 and Vita cant either.

        1. Sony is butthurt.

By lifecycle I mean from the start of one console to the begining of the next one. With sony that is typically 5-6 years.
I don’t care how long they continue selling there console.
The ps3 and 360 feel old now. They need replaceing with succesors just for the sake of it.

Like ubisoft said , They need a new cycle to start so they can start making new IP’s and all that jazz.

        2. I think sony need to addres the technicals problem they have whit the ps3 soner than later his memory probles will not allowd it to be push that long has they like and microsoft is the more dire need of a tune up

          1. They’ll likely announce new systems in the next year or two but that doesn’t mean they have to stop supporting their current ones – especially in the case of Sony, they usually support it well after the successor arrives on the scene.

I’m sure next generation, they’ll implement the things that they learned from the mistakes of this generation.

              1. I think at this stage, talking about it may do more harm than good. They’re still trying to sell the system they have now.

If consumers start hearing rumbles of a new system, they may become apprehensive about purchasing the current one. It is all business, after all.

                1. I agree but also not telling are making many to transfer to those that did so if you say they are making it they are screw if they do they are screw too lol sound like they are having the same troubles nintendo is having

          2. The PS2 sold way past its generation because everyone knew it deserved every bit of its success. However, nobody really cares about the PS3; all they care about it is that it beats the others. It’s like everybody is forcing themselves to like the PS3, because they know if they don’t, then the PS3 is dead. And let’s face it, its hype and appeal drummed up by the zealots rather than by its quality of games is what’s keeping it afloat. And Sony knows this too, that’s why they too are also trying to keep it alive by not releasing the PS4 any time soon, as if the absence of the PS4 is supposed to keep making the PS3 relevant or something. You can talk over and over again the number of exclusives the PS3 has, or how much power the PS3 still has yet to show (and probably never will), and make so many other empty arguments, but none of that will matter if nobody cares about the PS3. When marketing a product, always remember that it’s not what you make that matters, but it’s what the people see. And they see something that is not relevant or important to them.

        3. I don’t know about any of you guys. But I am litteraly sick to fucking death with the PS3, 360. and wii. They’re old now. Sure I am looking forward to GTA5 and Metal gear rising and ground zeroes , but that’s it. It’s time for some new systems with new innovations which is why I can’t w8 for the wiiu!.

        4. What people don’t realise is that, Sony and MS have tried to make this Current gen, span out for as long as possible, they weren’t ready to move on.
I’m actually an ex Microsoft (Xbox 360 in particular) rep, not a fan boy, but it paid well, and it was a job. I moved on since, and my heart lies with Nintendo. Anyways… the Kinect was launched and brought out and marketed, and had a marketing budget, in the same regard as a brand new console. I’m assuming the PS Movie was the same. The point of those gimmicks were to basically avoid bringing out new consoles and extend the life of the current ones by about 5-6 years. Nintendo has their attitude set in stone, 6 year cycle, and new hardware. Which is great. They sold the Wii at a profit bnecause it was old hardware, they absolutely smashed the sales, and they’re ready to move on, right on their 6 year mark…basically to the day.
Sony and MS will no doubt present their next-gens at next year’s E3, the following E3 drive the hype…probably for launch end of 2014.
          Wii U = HUGE advantage.

as for Pachter, he just gives an opinion on his thoughts, that is all. There is nothing to support his arguments. He knows as much as the rest of us, until the companies themselves actually release statements and numbers on paper. He’s been saying the same thing about Wii’s downfall for years and he was wrong about it all the time.

          1. I wholeheartedly agree with all of this comment!

Sony and Micro can drag their consoles for a few more years. Nintendo will gain an Anchor in the industry an unstoppable one.

      2. My response to that page:

“Patcher, I’m going to be frank with you: You do not know what is best for Nintendo.

You also do not understand the reason why first-party IP’s are supposed to STAY first-party, especially in Nintendo’s case.
If anything, your idea of a smart profit move would do nothing more than drive people AWAY from purchasing a Nintendo system.

Why buy the latest Mario and the official Nintendo handheld it’s on when you can get a licensed Mario game on your phone, after all?
Your plan would literally take one of Nintendo’s most profitable IP’s and make it work against hard-ware sales for the company.
And in case you had not noticed, unlike Sony and Microsoft, NINTENDO’S MAIN BUSINESS IS GAMING SYSTEMS.

They’ve already stated they will never go full software.

Your suggestion is nothing more than a veiled push in the direction of going full software.

It would be harmful to the company, especially if you take the gateway theory into account; allow Mario to be licensed out freely, and suddenly everyone stops buying the rest of Nintendo’s other lucrative first-party IP’s on Nintendo’s systems because they assume Nintendo will break their promise and license those out to other areas, as well.

There goes half the reason they became a gaming company.
And it would be the fault of an analyst, you, who has little understanding of why Nintendo has succeeded for so long.

To put it bluntly, Patcher, your suggestion would easily ruin Nintendo in the long run.
If you were as smart as you believe yourself to be, you would retract it and rethink your stance before trying to tell Nintendo what is best for them.”

      1. When 2/3 7th gen consoles are still performing very well? While I’m all behind the Wii U, it’s hardly going to be the death of the PS3 and Xbox 360 quite yet.

      1. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Because I’d be fucking livid if I thought my console of choice had only survived 4 years.

        1. I think if you look into generations prior to this one you’ll see that 4 years in has traditionally been the time where people have started to speculate about the next gen…

This gen has been called abnormally long for a reason.

    3. Well they say that the PS3 will have a 10 years of life span, so… yeah, for them, it´s to early to start thinking in release a new console.

      1. it’s a good idea to release a new console before the life cycle of the old one actually ends.. or else they’ll have nothing

      2. Well, the PS3 does not have to die before they can launch their next console. The PS2 is coexisting with the PS3 as well, after all. So I’m guessing it will be the same with the PS3 and PS4 too, for a few years maybe.

      1. Yep, and that’s why they’re shipping their kits for their next console already, hm ? Because they can’t afford it, right ?

            1. ok, let’s asume they did the specs…now, wheres the money to make it possible?

obviously not from vita sales…sure they’re a big company so they can afford to make, mass-produce and sell, at loss of curse, keep waiting to 2014-2015 or whenever they think this gen is done.

            1. If you only knew. See I know because unlike you, I actually have friends at the corporate level inside Sony.

I have 2 community managers and 4 developers on my friends list.

Me and my clan run community events and tournaments for Sony too :>

One should know 100% about something before talking about it.

              1. I’m not sure if you replied to me by accident or not or if it was a misunderstanding, but just in case:
My comment was meant for TheDragon234. :3

              2. So you waste your time on a junk product. Given the braggart that you are, I’m not really surprised. You’d probably make a better investment shitting money in a hole,

            2. It’s a rumour. Every one on IGN creamed their pants because the ps3 dev kits had 8-16GB of RAM and was using a mediocre CPU….. great…

Dev kits don’t mean shit. The early wiiu dev Kits were using 3-6GB .

              1. Did I say the mentioned specs are going to be implemented ? I did not.
Did I say the mentioned specs are true ? I did not.
Did I say anything about the specs at all ? I did not.
I merely said that development kits are being distributed to developers.

              2. The 8-16gb was actually a typo. Instead of 8-16 Gigabytes it was supposed to be gigabits, which (i think) puts it at aroun 1-2 gigabytes.

                1. lol. 1-2 gigabytes! I think the PS4 will have a bit more RAM than that. But a Console does not need 16GB or even 8GB of RAM lol. 4GB of RAM for a dedicated console would be about the equivalent of 16GB for a PC..

      1. Year over year ps3 sales fell slightly but more games were sold. Sonys Playstation branch actually made more profit this year than last year. Playstation is completely fine. Sony sufferers more in the TV business and other branches.

Unlike Microsoft. Their Microsoft game studios branch is actually in debt and has yet to make a gain.

        1. that may be so, but the sales figures of the ps3 show that the market for the ps3 is near saturation
if that isn’t a sign that a new console generation should start soon i don’t know what is

          1. What are these so called sale figures you keep mentioning? cause as far as I know the PS3 is selling well in EU and in the U.S.

    4. Naturally Sony would say that it’s too early to talk about the end of the generation. They don’t have the resources to launch another game capable system after their last one committed identity theft, their current one is shorting out, and Sony is dealing with the fallout of blaming their consumers for being stupid rather than making products that actually work for once.

      1. It was their network. Not the console. And I can assure you, if any other competitor had anonymous go after them, they’d be as screwed as Sony.

      1. I doubt that. It tends to about six years and it’s about that time. Nintendo’s making a more powerful system and the smart thing for Microsoft and Sony to do right now would be to release new consoles from the risk of losing sales because of the systems being outdated.

    5. Great point sony. Your right. & while the Loyalty fanboy argue about what last gen console better waiting for there next gen console i’ll be on my next gen wii u geting a better experience from the game they have & are exclusives. Haaaa anit have sense & not being a fanboy great.

    6. It is a bit early since this generation doesn’t officialy end until all next gen systems are out and the current gen stops receiving support. Technically the 6th gen is still going on since the PS2 is still being supported.

    7. It wont be a good idea to release a PS4 when PS3 sales are still good. It’ll require more expensive hardware and reduce profit, plus just take a look at Sony. So no PS4 soon. Nintendo on the other hand needs a new console….. and so do nintendo fans

    8. “However, Nintendo will be launching the first next generation video game console, the Wii U, on November 18th”

Wrong, the 3DS was the first Next Gen console, as said by Nintendo themselves.

    9. blablabla, fuck you sony
oh and fuck you too, microsoft, for destroying RARE, u fucking piece of shit

      that is all
      oh wait, it’s not

love you big time Nintendo <3

    11. Too EARLY?!? Try 1-2 years LATE! The big three should have had their next gen consoles out by now. This current generation is stretching out waaaay too long, we need new hardware to shake things up and give developers new toys to work their magic on. Every huge franchise had its orrigins during the launch of a new console, and I see every day that this generation drags on for as just one more day prolonging the next big thing in video games. Props to Nintendo for giving us the innovation we need when we need it.

    12. In one sense, for Sony it may be too early because they can pretty easily support the PS3 for a while longer. And putting out the PS4 quickly could result in some lost sales of PS3’s and PS3 games.

However… They don’t want to give Nintendo too much of a head start. It wouldn’t be wise to give Nintendo 2 years of being the only next generation console.

Yup copycats So there you have your answer.

    14. This generation will only last as long as consumers will make it last. Who decided how long the Virtual Boy would last? The consumers who realized how crappy it was. Who decided how long the PS1 would last? The consumers who realized that the PS2 could do everything the PS1 did, with a lot more stuff. Who decided how long the Atari 5200 would last? The consumers who realized the console was shit, so they ended up going back to the 2600! As for the PS3, I’d give it one more year, but during that one more year, Sony better have some news of a new console out fast, cuz if that year is gone and they have nothing new, the PS3 is going to TANK. TANK HARD. And that’s because, try as you hardcore Sony fans might, you just won’t have the patience with the PS3 for 3-4 years longer. 3-4 years more is unrealistic, but Sony already knows this, that’s why they said it, so PS3s can still be seen as having more appeal. They artificially drummed up appeal for the PS3, even though it’s clearly near the end of its appeal among consumers. But all the hardcore fans will be moronic as fuck, and they’ll see this news as saying that the PS3 still has appeal for more years. Remember what I said in a comment above? It’s not what you make, but what people see? Sony is using that to their advantage. They’re saying the PS3 has longer value, not because it actually does, but because they know their dumbass worshippers want to hear that sort of thing all the time. They provide you with validation, and you’ll be too busy feeling proud to realize that they’re feeding off you with both money and soul. Remember this, if somebody on the developer end is telling you how long this generation will last, don’t believe them, cuz they’re bullshitting you. A generation ending or not is never up to the developers. It’s up to all of us as consumers.

      1. i dissagree its not the consumer who brings up the new consoles, its the developers aka Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo. Not us. What you are saying doesnt make sense….

        1. I think he’s right and makes perfect sense, it’s usually the consumers that direct when a new console is needed, However, developer’s do have a much louder voice now a days. When a console begins to loose its appeal (The Wii for example) the consumer’s let them know buy no longer purchasing the hardware or software associated with the console. Which inevitably lights a roaring fire under the company’s ass(Nintendo). Consumer reports sprinkled with developer input is the reason a new console is released.

      2. by not telling us the consumers what plans you are bringing and if you are willing to bring a new console like in the case of ps4 you are forcing us to stick to the ps3 so we really dont have the choice here.

      3. This is where Nintendo shines, because it has put a big amount of pressure on the 2 competitors to get their acts together.
They can criticise Nintendo for releasing early, and low end specs and not conforming with them all they want, it’s basically jsut to try and keep the attention on themselves and try to maintain their user base, but in reality, they’re shitting bricks, because they know that any new hardware sparks insane amount of interest, enough to put a massive dent in their sales. Which is why you’ll notice now that Sony found the perfect opportunity to release their slimmer PS3 at a lower price and Xbox scraping the barrel with their dirt cheap consoles.

      4. You say the consumer chooses how long a syatem stays around, but turn around and say that sony needs to hurry into the next gen?

Last I knew, you weren’t the voice of the consumer. SALES are, sony is actually making a profit off its PS3 and that alone tells you what the consumer wants.

Now ofcourse the PS4 will be out, the dev kits have already surface, so just calm down and take you’re meds. Everything will be ok.

    15. if nintendo wii u sell’s a massive range of games like in the 50 million’s and same with the wii u console ceo of sony, Shuhei Yoshida will have to make sony ps4 come out 6 months erly

      1. My PS3 is only around for one reason: Journey.
        that’s it.
Was thinking about Playstation All-Stars, until I came across those photos taken in Sony dev studios, where they have Wii consoles set up in there, getting all their ideas from.
They hate piracy, yet they’re practically pirating a game an charging money for the hack.

      1. D: You think that’s bad? I was robbed and went without a proper pc for a MONTH.

A netbook. Can. Only. Open. TWO TABS AT ONCE IN CHROME.

Also congrats on the new case :D!

    16. Nintendo is doing their own thing. They don’t care if Sony and Microsoft are moving onto their next gen consoles or not. Nintendo does what Nintendo wants to do. If they want to go next gen THAN THEY WILL!! Regardless lf their so called “Competition” wants to or not.

      1. But the thing is, Nintendo IS moving towards competition, look at the games announced, the majority are versions of games that will compete with the 360, PS3 and PC versions.

    17. I have to say, with Sony saying this, we may get a fragmented console generation this time around, with a new console being released every two years, instead of being more or less grouped together for release like this generation was. And to be honest, I have no idea what will happen because of that. Nintendo might get ahead because of a big fan base before the other two, Sony might because they will most likely release their console last and (probably) have the best graphics, or Xbox might as a good middle ground. Next gen is going to be very interesting.

    18. Sony has lost too much money on PS3 and PS Vita, they need to discontinue PS Vita and sell Playstation brand and studios and IP to Nintendo.
