Wii U GamePad Turns Off When You Access Wii Mode

In order to play Wii games on the Wii U, you must perform a system update on the new console. The Wii U GamePad shuts off when you access Wii Mode, as Wii games cannot be played with the Wii U GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller. Also, Wii Mode seemingly excludes some Wii Channels; the only Wii Channels available for download are The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword fix and the System Transfer application.

To access the Wii Shop Channel on Wii U, you need to sign in with your Nintendo Network ID.

    1. Not too obvious though. I mean, it would’ve been nice if we could have been able to let somebody else use/watch TV, then put the GamePad on the stand in front of us and have its second screen receive the output of the Wii game in the Wii U rather than the TV – kinda like Off-TV Play.

  1. Wait, I though you could play some Wii games just on the gamepad? I remember reading somewhere that games like New Super Mario bros. Wii could be played entirely on the gamepad.

    1. No, New Super Mario Bros. U can be played but not Wii as only Wii U Software works with the GamePad, Wii Software is loaded in a separate mode which basically shuts off the Wii U Functions. Similar to how when loading Gamecube Games on Wii the Wii shut off Wii Functions.

  2. who cares.. off to bed..wake up..smoke up and 9am visit to gamestop to pick up my 2 Wii U’s and my 5 games and pro-controller ………sick of thinking of the Wii U……need to smoke myself to sleep!!!

        1. 4:21 here! Man, I need to go to sleep! fucking Rice pudding and coffee is a deadly, ecstacy like combination. Guess I will watch another episode of southpark and then fall asleep with my 3dsxl in my hands….. again…..

29 minutes till launch! (For Walmart pre-orders) Gamestop peoplez like me have to waitz tillz tomorrowz… Lol this is fun… IF I HAD MY WII U I WOULD BE HAVING MORE FUN!!! I’m going crazy waiting……..

  3. I find this pathetic. Are you serious Nintendo? So let me get this straight,we can’t play the Wii Virtual Console games,WiiWare games, and the Wii games with the Wii U GamePad?You better make an update for the Wii U that would let us play Wii Virtual Console games,WiiWare games, and the Wii games with the Wii U GamePad because that’s pathetic Nintendo!

    1. Why are you talking to a fucking mirror? I find your comment cowardly and pathetic. You can play the Wii Virtual Console, but only if you transfer your Wii data onto the new Wii U. Just because they didn’t add that onto the Wii U GamePad doesn’t mean there’s no chance at all. Nintendo will come with an alternative to fix the situation… perhaps a Wii U Virtual Console for you to play it either on the HDTV or GamePad. For now, just relax!!!!!!

      1. I Guess because you can charge the gamepad … anyway, i agree that people needs to relax because if nintendo work on to get the games to work on the gamepad, the wiiu will never been released.

      2. Listen man I love Nintendo and I love the Wii U.Why do you think i’m mad that the Wii Virtual Console games,WiiWare games, and Wii games.can’t be played with the Wii U GamePad.The Wii U GamePad is the most interesting controller I ever saw and/or tried.Honestly,I couldn’t care less how the GameCube games can’t be played with the Wiimote/Nunchunk,Classic Controller,or Classic Controller Pro on the Wii because those controllers are no where near as interesting as the Wii U GamePad.I hope they make an update for the Wii U to play Wii VC games,WiiWare games, and Wii games with the Wii U GamePad.

  4. that’s a lie, i email nintendo and they said you don’t need to update , you JUST need to update if you want to to use miiverse , tv etc…..

  5. You mean I can’t play Wii games on the GamePad? My tube TV has some problems with lighting, and everything bright becomes blurry. I wanted to use the GamePad’s LCD widescreen to play Wii games in better quality! =/
