Michael Pachter, research analyst at Wedbush Securities, recently claimed that no developer or publisher, other than Nintendo, will support the new Wii U in the future. Pachter said he thinks that when next-gen consoles from Nintendo’s competitors are released, they are going to be better than Wii U. Pachter also said he thinks Nintendo will eventually become completely irrelevant.
“I think you’re going to see now with the Wii U, notwithstanding its early launch support, nobody’s going to support it. I don’t think we’re going to see every game on the Wii U next year. I think when next-gen consoles come out they’re going to be better than the Wii U. Call of Duty is amazing on the Wii U this year. The problem with playing Call of Duty online is it’s a community and if there’s only four people playing it on the Wii U it’s no fun. Nobody in their right mind would buy a Wii U and say ‘I’m going to play Call of Duty.’ That’s like saying ‘I gave up Facebook, and it’s Google+ now’.”
“Nintendo’s trading at about $3 billion of equity value; it was trading at about $80 billion. The market hates business models that start to show losses, and start to fail. Crappy little Riot Games, doing $150 million in revenue and wildly profitable, is worth a buttload more than Zynga, doing $1.1 billion and not making money. I think Nintendo becomes completely irrelevant. They have their niche, Nintendo’s first-party content is great content, and hardcore people will keep buying their consoles, but they’re not going to only play with Nintendo consoles.”

i know right? and since when is consistently selling out of the console “abysmal” and stores even said, the reason why the 360 has sold more in this time period is because of how highly available a 360 is compared to a wiiu. and seeing how the 360 is the second most popular consol, to the wii, it makes sense that if people weren’t able to get a wii u, they just grab a 360. a couple of my friends were in the EXACT same position on blackfriday, they wanted a wii u, but they were out of them so they got 360’s instead.

there already are a “buttload” of people playing cod on it lol. when i rented it, i was instantly put into a match that was almost full upon selecting the multiplayer option. even though the game itself was way to samey, it was pretty nice to be able to just jump right into a session full of people to make an accurate judgement on the game’s multiplayer. idk what patcher’s deal is, but the wii u is pretty great so far, and i can already see 3rd party developers jumping on board with it.

Yeah, it’s Pachter. We know he says outlandish things. Bringing up the Vita in the discussion is irrelevant and a deliberate attempt at a stir of the fire.
It’s a perfect example because Wii U and Vita are on equal ground. He bases his complaint on the fact that there aren’t enough good games coming out on Wii U. Last time I checked Vita doesn’t have much better of a selection. He’s video game analyst. He’s supposed to making judgements on all the products across the board not just Nintendo’s products. He’s failed to do his job in an unbiased way in my opinion. If he made an attempt to criticize every product that may deserve questioning (hence Vita as example) then I wouldn’t be so objective to his tactics. I never said Vita was a bad system. It’s an amazing system plagued with the same garbage that the PSP was stuck with. Ports of the console. Sony seems determined to continue that trend. Ports are ok but shouldn’t be the primary answer. Original content should lead the device.

Garbage is a strong word to use and possibly the wrong choice of word to use on your part — unless you truly meant what you said. The PSP and Playstation Vita are not plagued with garbage games. Because you don’t like the majority of games found on those systems does not make does games garbage. The only truth in that statement you made is that you think the PSP and Playstation Vita are plagued with garbage games — which is more to do with the games that are found on does systems not appealing to you personally. What you’ve said in your statement (which I’ve quoted above) is a subjective opinion and not factual. Also, a game being a port does not make that game all of a sudden garbage on the platform it was ported to. List that long list of garbage games you’re referring to that are found on the PSP and Playstation Vita.
Why bother listing them. I’ll tell you what I got instead. Didn’t see a reason to own one till Castlevania, Mega Man, Maverick X, Phantasy Star, Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts came out. What I meant about garbage was all those PS2 ports half assed due to lack of buttons. Unfortunately the only games that look interesting to me on Vita were Uncharted, Assassins Creed and Call of Duty. AC and COD I’m hearing aren’t so great. So I’m back to square one wanting a Vita. Uncharted alone wont cut it for me. Those ports of PS3 games don’t tickle my fancy either I’m afraid. Again, I’m not against Vita and just disappointed in what Sony has done with it thus far.

Indie games have only grown significantly in their popularity and if the rumors recently published on another site about what Microsoft and Sony are going to show off at E3 2013 are true, then we can bet that independent game developers won’t be supporting those two, newer formats like they would the Wii U.
Not only is the Wii U easier to develop for, but I’ve heard nothing but praise for how the Nintendo eShop on BOTH the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are so similar now to services such as Steam in terms of patches and updates to games going live.
And never forget the Nintendo/Unitiy agreement. The eShop will be submerged with indie games in a year’s time.

Probably. And this may be the reason he exaggerates most of times. Personally, I like to read and thought about he says, because we can end up getting something reasonable from his statements. For instance, we was the first to mention that Wii U resembles DS in the sense that both have two screens. OK, we know that it is such a controversial issue – to compare handhelds and consoles – but I’ve been seeing lots of people saying that now and, at least to me, Nintendo fans are agreeing with this idea now. What makes him quite discredited are such assumptions/statements like “Nintendo is now irrelevant” or “nobody will support Wii U within a year”. Come on, we all know that even Wii was well supported by thirdies until his 4th or 5th year on the market – just see what I’ve got with The Last Story, all CoD games, Epic Mickey, Xenoblade Chronicles, Lego Games, and so on.
But the Wii U is NOTHING like the Nintendo DS. The only thing the two have in common is a touch screen.
Other than that, the GamePad’s screen is entirely separate to the TV Screen, can stream content from the TV Screen to the GamePad screen seamlessly, and it can also be used for completely asymmetric gameplay. A good way to mention the Wii U in terms of design is that it is like a hybrid between both a console and portable system.
Technically, you are right. But you may want to consider that DS was the first handheld to harbor two screens, as well as the Wii U is the first console in doing so.
I don’t mean to butt in but the game & watch dual screen in the early 80’s was the precursor to DS. Created by Gunpei. His work still lives on even 15 years after his death. Man was genius. Creator the Game Boy and the ill fated Virtual Boy. Went on to create the Bandai Wonderswan and had some involvement with Project Atlantis. A battery power project that later became the Game Boy Advance.
Ooops. That’s true! Although Game & Watch was a “single-game system”, it is the very first dual-screen gaming system available. And they used to have even an alarm! I’ve never had one, but I used to borrow some from my rich friends. :)

well if the otherconsoles are gonna be tha powerful then it will be a problem. as costs to making games will be more expensive maybe twice as much and then theyd have to charge a hell of a lot more maybe around 100 dollars. possible meanwhile the wii u will have these exclusives and maybe multiplat games around 60 and give just as much fun. Nintendo is also seeking indie devleopers to make more exclusive games on their system.
I’m not buying any “next gen Sony and MS consoles will tower way above Wii U”. I don’t really see how HD gaming can significantly improve in 2013/2014, since there arent TVs displaying at more than 1080p. Heck I’m not even sure Sony and MS havec anything next gen in the works to this day.

I don’t see how Microsoft and Sony (especially Sony) can even improve, I think Graphics have reached their limit, atleast for a good while now, the only thing I can see with a big change is Gameplay, which the Wii U can do no problem because it was made by Nintendo, well known for it’s great Gameplay, plus the Wii U has SEGA, Ubisoft and others at it’s back

Patcher being negative towards NIntendo? No way. He sadly makes a few good points, but like most diehard Nintendo fans I only pick up my unit for 1st party titles. I had the chance to try Batman Arkham City on the Wii U and I prefer the PS3 port. The Wii U version lost a lot of frames in cut-scenes and the pad usage felt very gimmicky. In this sense I agree that ports on the Wii U won’t find the success they will on Sony consoles. Look at the laggy framerate on the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U edition during the load screens. I love Nintendo but this new unit just doesn’t have the power under the hood for ports thus far. I’m really hoping future firmware updates address this issue.

It’s sad to say but there is an ounce of truth behind this. The only people I know (including myself) that own Wii Us are hardcore Nintendo fans. Everyone else that I know takes the console as something they shouldn’t really take seriously even against Microsoft and Sony’s current gen consoles. Nintendo is in a really big hole with gamers around the world and they have to drastically change the way they are advertising if they want to fix it.
How the hell is Nintendo in a really big hole? Just because they had to fix the problems with the Wii U doesn’t mean they’re losing support from Wii U owners including myself. Last Monday, I’ve gotten the Wii U in the palm of my hands. The system works and the GamePad is as smooth as silk… especially playing the Ninja Castle attraction at Nintendo Land. And then, I had no internet connection. My mother and sisters want me to send it back to the store for a refund, but I had to refuse that offer. Instead, I had to call customer service with a live representative to fix the root of the problem. Thirty minutes later, my internet is now connected to the Wii U and the problem was solved.
Playing games, surf the web, watching Netflix, and making new friends on Miiverse. In just four days, I’m enjoying the Wii U and will be planning to purchase games in stores and buying indy titles at the eShop including Nano Assault Neo and Trine 2: Director’s Cut. 2012 is definitely the year of Nintendo and there’s still more to come when 2013 arrives.
No surprise that I play Blops2 and speak with players that sold off their Xbox and PS3’s because they love the U. They love the GamePad and they think it controlls better plus has a sweet screen for their inventory items.
i know quite a few people who at least plan to get one next year.. myself included
none of them (again myself included) are hardcore nintendo fans.. out of all the nintendo consoles released so far i only own 2 .. most of them own 1 or 2.. or none

Interactive, Square Enix, Platinum Games, Electronic Arts, THQ, Disney Interactive Studio, Tecmo Koei, Capcom and Namco Bandai Games plus there are also the indie developers such as WayForward and Frozenbyte ect.

He’s either very misguided, or just trying to get attention. At worst what will happen is that Nintendo stops making consoles and only makes software, like Sega. Which would hardly make them irrelevant. Even Sega themselves, despite their problems, are far from irrelevant yet.
Nintendo’s style is important for the industry. We’re already dominated by the casual fps crowd, we need consoles that offer alternatives. We need funky controllers and miiverse and all that stuff. We need things to keep the industry fresh. I’d rather not rely solely on small indie devs for that.

I do understand and see some of his points, but why do I need 500K other users to enjoy Call of Duty? I play it every night on Wii U and have a blast with only a couple thousand people on there just like I have previous installments on the PS3 or Xbox. also, the times have changed, its not all about marketing to one device and thinking everybody will only by one of the brands. How many people in here own multiple systems? I don’t use FB or google+, terrible reference Pachter, yet I own every single system out right now.

I kind of (unfortunately) agree with what Pachter says, BUT not for the multiplayer reason (Wii U will excel in multiplayer). Developers will not support the Wii U due to it’s very underwhelming clock speed on the CPUs. Of course Nintendo will be able to do things with it because, hey, it’s Nintendo but looking at some of the games that have released at launch, the Wii U cannot even properly handle current generation games and as examples: just look at the drops in the framerates that occur quite often in some games. AAA Games now require much more than graphics alone (and I believe that Nintendo just focused on graphics this time) and when the Xbox 720 and PS4 (or whatever they will be called) are released, Nintendo is going to have a major disadvantage with CPU (don’t think that with GPU).
The Xbox 360 is going to lose all support in 5 hours because the Wii U exists.

I despise this guy. He really has it out for all three major consoles. I feel like he praises cell phone shovelware more as of late. So the Wii U didn’t take off day on. Uhm, there’s a TON of crap on kids’ XMAS lists. I mean, seriously, they expect everyone to be able to afford it? I’m sure once more titles are available (cos though there’s a vast amount, a few are shovelware and a few are just ports) it’ll pick up. A lot of the “launch titles” turned into “launch window”, so that could’ve turned people away.
The one thing many people fail to remember is that both the Orbis (PS4) and the next Xbox will have 2nd game lock on them. This in itself isn’t the biggest issue, it’s the economy. The second hand game market is huge, a lot of people aren’t as well paid as “industry analysts”, and purchase their games used.
So, if the economy doesn’t brighten and wages don’t increase, the likelihood of second hand game sales increasing is high. All of a sudden you have families who want to buy a games console for entertainment, and look at 3 choices: The Wii U, the Orbis or the Xbox720, then wonder if they can afford new games, and find out that the last two consoles cannot play used games without an additional cost.
Which one are struggling families going to choose ? Highly likely the console with no used game lock. I don’t doubt they’ll still buy some new games, but a lot of their purchases will be the used game market.
This puts Nintendo in a better position, in my opinion.
Lets look at the current generation:
The 3DS or the Vita. The Vita, on paper, is a much better machine, but it’s not selling well due to poor games and high price. Clearly having the best hardware isn’t willing any battles this time around.
People are thinking with their wallet, getting smarter about their choices, and looking beyond their front door for information. Wii U, irrelevant ? Unlikely.

There are tons of hardcore Nintendo fans that will been Nintendo going, but as far as being a “big player” for third party games (the lifeblood of consoles), Nintendo has been far behind the other two companies for a long time, and it doesn’t look to be changing.
Hello :) Maybe the WiiU is not more innovative than the Wii was 6 years ago, but at least they always try something new and dont just put only more cpu power and more ram in the console like the others. And actualy i think the WiiU is innovative becouse of the GamePad, you can really make new play styles with it. And another fact is that Nintendo sold more Wii consoles than sony ps3 or microsoft xbox 360 consoles. And they made it that woman and other people played videogames who before the Wii never played any games, that is very good in my opinion :)
