Senior principal analyst and head of games at Screen Digest Piers Harding-Rolls has told Edge that he believes that Nintendo is behind the curve in a number of fields when it comes to next generation consoles. Harding-Rolls cited online and cloud content strategies as something Nintendo has yet to fully embrace. Thankfully, Nintendo announced earlier this week that Miiverse will eventually come to smartphones in the Spring.
“We believe Nintendo looks increasingly isolated in the market. It does not have the luxury of a wider device ecosystem play such as Sony, Apple or Microsoft and it is behind the curve in its online and cloud content strategies. We would like to see Nintendo be more aggressive in ‘hinging’ off its devices using its online platform – Nintendo Network – onto third-party devices as Microsoft is starting to do with Xbox Smartglass and Sony is doing with PlayStation Mobile. Neither of these solutions is significant at present but it does show that these companies are willing to engage users on the most popular third-party connected devices to drive relevance for their own products.”

I have to disagree with this, only because SmartGlass has made a believer out of me. Playing Dance Central 3 during a party, it’s so much fun to keep dancing while those waiting for their turn can select the next song or setup the playlist or change any of the options, all w/o while the gameplay is going. I can do this on my smart phone or tablet, on a 7 year old game console (8 in November), for free! Yeah, I hate to say Nintendo is behind.

The fact that Mr. Hardling-Rolls (and staff) failed to pose the question of “when” at all in their analysis (as well as fail to mention Nintendo’s plans in bringing these services) really points to how increasingly biased this particular portion of the report was! Plus, it’s not a matter of “significance”. Nintendo’s induction of Miiverse/eShop onto web-enabled devices, computers and smartphones in the future is by no means more “significant” than Smartglass/PS Mobile (although, it’s debatable whether anyone /really/ enjoys Smartglass in the first place…. just look at the reviews on the app store). And timeliness is hardly a matter of discussion here—or rather, is even important to the discussion at all. This isn’t a matter of “when” Nintendo will release the eShop/Miiverse onto third-party devices. It’s a matter of /how/, and if, at all, it will be efficient. Cloud storage isn’t necessarily the same as cloud gaming (or streaming a game from a cloud). Chances are, you have been using cloud storage for many, many, years. Something that you rely on a great deal. Think about it.
What’s more, a lot of games have been using cloud storage, including Nintendo games.

Now they are with the times with digital distribution. Heck, Nintendo is the console distributor of the main three to be embracing it the most now (again, of the main three. I am not including Steam in this) And as far as the statement as connectivity to external non-Nintendo devices goes, he ignored the fact that Nintendo announced an app to access Miiverse on smartphones, and also confirmed the process of an eShop app where you can buy games on the go, and download them when you get home, Steam does this. But according to this guy, It’s still counts as behind the curve because It’s not out yet, apparently.
Also, It’s not exactly fair to compare Nintendo to Sony and Microsoft in the first place. Unlike them, Nintendo is a video game company, they do not make phones, TVs, radios, and anything else like that. So if you want to judge Nintendos decisions and practices, you must consider their goals and identity. Sony and Microsoft are not gaming companies, they have gaming devisions. Nintendo, however, is nothing but, so if you want to make a claim such as “behind the curve” remember who you’re talking about, and remember the current position of other video game companies right now. Until Steambox was announced, Nintendo was the only dedicated gaming company developing home consoles for 10 years, and despite going up against smartphones and other new innovative pieces of tech, Nintendo is still doing extremely well. Give credit where it’s due.

I am so sick of these people. Nintendo makes the best video games ever. I thank the artists at Nintendo for giving me so much awesome entertainment I have enjoyed with family and friends. I hope Nintendo buys Vigil games and Darksiders and Red Faction. I also hope Nintendo makes a Nintendo 3DS XXL with 7 inch upper screen and 6.25 lower touchscreen, that is ultra thin and light that has MiiVerse, Nintendo VideoChat, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and a super awesome Internet browser and two circle slider pads and two more triggers and it can be a Wii U controller. I bet it would sell like IPad mini or Kindle Fire HD.

As far as I know, Nintendo is a game company. Unlike Sony and Microsoft has lots of other business. They can sync every product they have. I have less expectation to Nintendo’s Online capabilities but I know they’re working hard to catch up. It’s one step at a time.
I’m hoping to see Cloud technology on the Nintendo Side this year.

I played New SMB on Wii U today at Best Buy and I cam away very impressed.
Cloud gaming? Not the next generation, more like the other way around..
I want to OWN my games, not play someone Else’s when yet they can turn the server off any time they want. And you need Internet.
It’s only good as an addition, NEVER a “next” generation of the gaming culture.

Haha ! It’s funny because they began their analysis on the grounds that MicroSoft or Sony are somehow a reference to gaming feature innovation, obviously ignoring who has always taken the risks first WITH SUCCESS, to add each component of what we all today call the “console gaming experience”.
Nintendo shapes what gaming is. Nintendo is the patron. Deal with it.
Sounds to me like another person willing Nintendo to go 3rd party. Nintendo are more or less doing what they’ve always done and they’ve always been criticised for not being cutting edge, and it’s never mattered. While everyone else is trying to craft the finest HD boobs Nintendo is trying to advance gameplay. The gaming market is currently in a mess because Nintendos imagination is goiong through dry spell, so there’s nothing for anyone to copy!
