Dragon Quest X Is Not Meeting Sales Expectations

dragon_quest_large

Square Enix is now in the red after the company failed to meet sales expectations for the period of April to December 2012. The blame is partly thought to lay with the company’s Dragon Quest X which is currently available on Wii in Japan. MSN Japan says that sales of the game have failed to meet the company’s expectations. However, Square Enix says that sales of Dragon Quest X are making steady progress. Dragon Quest X comes out on Wii U in Japan next month.

“The slump is reportedly down to the company’s new online RPG venture, Dragon Quest X,” reports MSN. “While the disappointing financial turn for the company can be partially attributed to the burden of running the new online service, it is also down to game sales not meeting expectations. The Wii (and soon to be Wii U) game is however, making ‘steady progress’ according to Square Enix.

  1. Didn’t it sell close to a Million just in Japan on the Wii ? Not bad if you ask me. Maybe release it worldwide on Wiiu and you will get better sales ?

    1. So i had to read the article 3 times and i still dont get it, did it fail expectations or is it doin good according to square enix?

      1. It’s pretty much sold 1M on Wii in Japan and there is only 12M wiis in Japan. What were they expecting it to sell ?

Dragon quest X did well , and where the fuck is the western version . They act like we don’t like MMO’s. Monster Hunter Ultimate and Dragon Quest X would give the Wiiu Hundreds if not thousands of hours of play time right from the start.

          1. They would sell enough to make money off at least. Localize this shit. They localize all those DS dragon quest games but not the Big console MMO ? Maybe/hopefully they are holding off for a western Wiiu version OF DQX for late 2013.

            1. I would also like to see e.x troopers localized and put on wiiu if nintendo pays capcom to change the hardcoded kanji thats in game

              1. I know . I wanted E.X troopers from the start. A lost planet spin off with AMAZING graphics on 3DS. What more could you want…

            2. I blame more square weak decisions to bring there jrpgs and weak mobile games too, not everything is Nintendo fault especialy since the first version of final fantasy 14 bombed.

                1. No releasing strong 3ds titles out of japan is killing them but not just 3ds games, xbox, ps3.,and wii games there is much we want from them but they dont give.

                  1. I know and by doing so , they’re making Average western gamers forget they exist. They need to show the West what they an do , all Japanese devs.

          2. Sadly we are a small minority of gamers in the west :/

I wish this game will see release. I could pay 50$ per month for this game really, it just looks that good to me.

          3. JRPG is a rehashed genre. Almost all JRPGs are the same: a bunch of kids with weird hair as the heroes, some creepy generic antagonist, boring battle system, confusing story, shit ton of grinding necessary, pointless sidequests.

              1. That comment he said about confusing story just goes to show you how stupider we as Americans are getting by the day. Not all but some. And boring battle system? I beg to differ, every JRPG has it’s own unique battle system, and it’s not always turn based or tactical. Kingdom Hearts and Tales would like to have a word with you sir i hate you.

      2. SE’s financial results were published last week. They commented on the performance of multiple franchises. There was no such comment about being disappointed in DQX.

This is MSN making shit up.

    2. Is it just me, or does it seem like every company is guestimating way too high.

It seems like all these people have god complexes where they think that their product is the best thing since sliced bread.

      1. I think DQX release on the Wii U is a win win for both square enix and nintendo. They should have released it sooner though: I can’t believe they spend too much time to port the original game to the Wii U ._.

        1. I know. It’s just like Monster Hunter Ultimate a Simple native 1080p re texturing job.

Monster Hunter Ultimate and Dragon Quest X should do good for Wiiu in Japan :)

            1. Monster Hunter Ultimate is doing EXTREMELY well on Wiiu in Japan son. Wiiu has sold about 1M in Japan. And MHU has sold about 400K including Bundled copies and digital.

  2. I can identify a few probably factors.

    1) No international sales. Americans like MMOs too.
    2) People knew from day one that a Wii U version would be coming, and odds are that many, if not the majority, have held off for it.

  3. I wonder if this can have to do with the fact that everyone and their mothers knows this will not be the optimal version of the games and are showing the well known Japanese dicipline and wait until the real thing comes out.

  4. I love Dragon Quest, but hate the idea of a monthly fee. So I’m on the fence about this. Anybody know how much the monthly fee will be in the US ? Or how much they have to pay in Japan converted in $ ?

  5. I believe it still can meet sales expectations. The Wii U version should give life to hardware and software sales for Nintendo and Square Enix respectively. Once they localize it to a western audience, they could sell possibly 2-3 million copies of the game and that is my conservative estimate. Just give the game time Square.

  7. Gee, who’da thought that turning Dragon Quest into a MMORPG for Wii wouldn’t be a smashing success?

    /sarcasm

After the Final Fantasy XIV debacle, it’s no wonder Square-Enix are struggling…
