Epic Says Next-Gen Will Be A “Substantial Leap” Over Current Gen

unreal_engine_4_1

Epic Games’ founder and chief executive officer, Tim Sweeney, believes that the next generation consoles provide a substantial leap over the current generation consoles on offer. Sweeney says that todays high-end PCs are representative of what players should expect from next-gen. He concluded that the team at Epic Games are more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of what he calls, high-end platforms.

“We’re more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms. What we’re doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be a substantial leap over the current generation.”

    1. Speak for yourself please.

Anyways, I’ve got my next gen console already and I am really satisfied with it. No real need for anything more for me in terms of consoles.

      1. I do not think many people will pay over 600$ for a video game console. I really do not. If what he says is true then I highly doubt we will see eighter Sony or Microsoft selling their next system for under that or they will take a bigger loss than I think they (atleast Sony) can afford now.

        1. $600 will not burn a hole in some people’s pocket. It may burn a hole in your pocket, but there are some who can easily afford it.

          1. Like me! $600 is a lot for a console, but Nintendo fanboys are using last gen as a guess for what these consoles will cost. Most of them don’t realize that the tech rumoured to be inside the next consoles isn’t that expensive, and that MS and Sony are keen not to make the same pricing mistake twice in a row, especially with the recession still in recovery.

It’s just fanboys using an excuse to hate consoles that they know will be more powerful, whilst they cling to their touchscreen controllers as if it’s the best thing ever invented.

Unfortunately, the vast gaming majority doesn’t agree with that, and sales figures back that up. And developers feel the same way…

            1. It’s called I have a PC for that. So why purchase a 50lb console that will overheat and sound like it is dieing. Waste of money. Blizzards TITAN will destroy all in the coming years, and starcraft 2 is about to get alot cooler.

Have u tried Miiverse yet? U would probably really like it.

    2. Exactly, High end PC’s are $2000+ shove that into a console and u get a 50lb heat box that burns your house down just for some extra shine on games that are not based around the “fun” concept.

      1. They will not be shoving in a full super power pc into a little box. They are not stupid, most likely they will be cramming in enough tech to run dx11. And will be using all the cheapest and coolest parts to avoid any overheating. Especially if there is a fan too I don’t fear any problem.

    1. I see that as more likely than that we will see a substantian power increse as he said. We have to take into consideration that if they becomes that expensive most people will go PC instand.

    1. Try $349-$399, says the Durango outline PDF released a while back.

Can’t speak for Sony, but I doubt they’ll make the same mistake twice. Hardware prices for what is expected to be in Orbis/PS4 aren’t that expensive, and it likely doesn’t have a really expensive touchscreen controller to manufacture.

  1. I doubt it, it’s not like pcs are THAT much better than hd gaming consoles and honestly Unreal Engine 4’s demo didn’t impress me all that much, the one Square Enix showed off (Luminous Engine) made it look bad.

    1. I hae to call you out on this one dude – comparing Crysis 2 on PC vs. console is night and day.

Unrelated to your post, I would bet a $400-$500 price tag for these consoles. The components are not relatively new; i could build either of the speculated next gen consoles for 500-600 easy, and that’s retail. Gotta lose money to make money sometimes.

      1. Stephan is right – BF3, Crysis 2, Max Payne 3, Project Cars, exclusives like Hard Reset and many others look much better than the current consoles, especially running in 1080p and 60fps or higher.

  2. I really hope they also mean the Wii U as well or else Epic really are just a bunch of Graphic whores… I’m pretty sure the jump from PS3 to PS4 will be much smaller than the Jump from PS2 to PS3 & Wii to Wii U for obvious reasons.

    1. I half agree with that, its doesnt, but the lighting engine is great, but the think that looks amazing is their liquid physics, looks at the demo for flowing lava, it looks amazing

      1. Does that matter though we all remember being amazed when we saw super Mario 64 for the first time so why is all this neccisary

  3. this’ll be interesting. If I recall, another well credited developer claimed that the next gen wouldn’t be that big of a leap? Well either way, this’ll be an interesting bout between the U, PS4, and Durango

    1. Epic WANTS it to be a big leap. That is what they live on. They have to tell investors etc. etc. etc. that everything is fine for them.

  4. Don’t care. The Wii U is more powerful enough for this gen Imo. And when I get it, I will enjoy it no matter how graphiclly advanced the next gen console will be.

  5. Well if the Wii U can actually handle PC Ports without losing much of the graphics then I see Unreal Engine 4 being used for Wii U as well as PS4 and Next Xbox

  6. Don’t care….. More interested in Gameplay experiences than Graphics. That being said , graphics should always be the best they possibly can be.

    1. I agree with you. Consoles do need new interesting ways to play rather than improved graphics to compete against PC as the gaming platform of choice for many people.

      1. My watch dogs runs at 1080p 60FPS with 4 times AA and specular blur derp… Mine runs at 720p 30FPS on Wiiu and has innovative controlls and off screen play :)

            1. MiiVerse is stupid IMO. I don’t want low-res characters that look like Nintendo 64 creations in my games. Nor do I care about talking to people I don’t even know on a glorified, censored Nintendo forum.

And the second screen is pointless for a large portion of games. ZombiU is annoying, having to hold up the controller to look around? Pointless. Having to look down every time I kill something just to pick stuff up? Annoying.

And off-screen play? I didn’t pay $1,800 for a high end, gorgeous LED TV so that I could play games on a non-HD (480p), cheap, tiny-by-comparison screen. Being able to play in the next room serves no purpose for me; again, I paid good money to enjoy my games on an awesome TV with great surround sound… I intend on using it, and would rather play on a console that is not only worlds more powerful, but doesn’t attempt to draw me away from my awesome gaming setup as a gimmick.

              1. $1800 for an LED? Wow, pretty sure my $600 1080p Viera Plasma looks as good if not better than your LED, and refreshes at at least twice the rate, and I paid 1/3 of what you did…but hey, I bet it looks great, I know my plasma looks fantastic, and definitely has better black and white contrast than pretty much every LED out there, but hey, more power to you for paying $1800…….

    1. Build your gaming PC and also get the Wii U, you can enjoy a different type of gameplay on the Wii U and get stuck into the exclusives. You’ll be able to play 90 per cent of the games that come out on the consoles on your PC too, on Steam probably, for much less.

      1. That’s essentially what I did. Gave up on any of the other two producing something innovative in their next consoles, so power vs. power PC obviously wins. And I got my Wii U for innovation + Nintendo exclusives. Having had all 3 generations of the Playstation, I’ll miss a few exclusives, but it’s not really worth breaking the bank for them anyway, certainly not at launch that’s for sure.

    2. PC is a platform and always will be for next gen games but it cost you a big leap to our pocket for High End parts. The problems with Big companies and PC Game Developers are most of them race for next gen engines to make their game look better and realistic. Is that really what we want? It’s nice to see realistic graphics but it would still be fun? That really makes us manly enough coz it’s realistic? Making games that more bloody and gore it’s not creative for me. It’s disastrous to a persons mind, to a well-being person.

I’m not looking down to their visions and creativeness, but they overshadowed small devs, indie devs. I’m trying to say here that they can push more further with current engine to utilize it’s potential. Just like console game developers, the1st party, they squeeze a lot in the system until it dried out to it’s potential resulting better gameplay and graphic-wise. That’s achievements and I think better than PC gaming. We can see mario all over again and again but what’s unique everytime mario game we played, it will always fresh and unique. It never gets old. That’s creativeness.

For small or Indie Developers, despite the limits, they can still produced and make better game than a PC game. That’s outstanding. I praised them, coz oneday one of them can change the game world.

  7. “We’re more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms. What we’re doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be a substantial leap over the current generation.”

The guy aint even talking about next gen consoles.

    1. Yes, he is. He is stating that what they are doing with current high-end PCs is indicative of what next gen consoles will be capable of, more than just graphically as well. Read the whole article.

  9. Graphics…they are talking aboutnthe graphics!

I don’t give a shit, HD is good enough, I don’t need Super Ultra Mega HD graphics if gameplay is the same and it costs over 450-600$€ whatever.
Nintendo has all the games I want any day.
Fun > Power in the gaming universe

    1. You obviously don’t own a high end gaming PC (although I’m sure you’ll tell me you do, even though you just slagged them off, or that you “know someone who does and you’re not impressed”), nor have you been to tech confrences and seen the demos of what next-gen engines can do beyond just “prettier graphics”.

It’s okay. Enjoy the Wii U. It’s fine for your Mario games and all, which are cool. But some of us want more out of a console than just Mario and Zelda.

    1. Oh, and:

      – Bigger game environments
      – Better frame rates
      – Smarter AI
      – Better, more advanced physics
      – Improved load times
      – More robust online capabilities
      – More interactive environments
      – More gameplay options
      – Less lag & graphical pop-ins
      – Better collision detection

Etc. You know, all that unimportant stuff that doesn’t affect gameplay at ALL.

      YEAH.

    1. If it’s big enough to entirely leave the Wii U behind, it’ll likely be too expensive for most people to afford to keep up with in the long term.
People got bills to pay, man.

      1. Not really. A big part of the Wii U’s price is the controller. Take that away, and add on another year of hardware price cuts, and you can EASILY create a console that will blow the Wii U away in every aspect.

With more power comes more than just prettier graphics, something Nintendo fans just can’t seem to understand.

  11. I bet his definition of “substantial” and my definition of “substantial” are very different.

The word he’s looking for is probably “noticeable”.

    1. It’s not about their games alone, it’s about the possibilities of the next gen hardware. Companies like Bungie, Valve, and Blizzard will definitely use the technology to it’s full potential… and then some. Count on it.

  12. Although the high end pc stuff is impressive, its bound to let a lot of people down if that is what the next gen consoles are offering.

Many are expecting Samaritan Demo esque graphics with the next gen, and that just isnt going to happen. Not even Pc’s are offering that in ingame graphics.

And although there is a noticable difference between those and their current gen counterparts, the question is, will it be enough?

And are they really gonna offer that level of graphics at 1080p, with 60fps?..im doubting it….more like 1080p at 30fps with lots of AA. Developers have usually opted for more polygons and effects over a solid framerate. I dont expect that to change.

even so..i dont doubt the games on these systems will look better than the stuff on the wiiu…but with games being rendered as beautifully as nintendoland and with nintendo’s biggest games usually being higher in the art direction…they should still be able to shine in comparison to a lot of games on the next gen systems

    1. It will be more than enough. The second screen thing isn’t as big of a game changer as Nintendo fans like to think it is. The second screen has a few really good uses, and a lot of bad/irrelevant ones that people will quickly grow less and less impressed with.

Developers see more potential in having a somewhat future-proof console (as much as a console CAN be anyway) than having a second screen. More power for various types of gameplay advancements (more than just graphical) provides more long-term design possibilities than just having a second screen does, and that’s the cold hard truth. Developers know this. Hence many 3rd party devs jumping ship on the Wii U, ignoring it completely, or making previously exclusive Wii U games into multi-platform games.

Not that Wii U can’t have good first party games (I’ve yet to see any, because NSMB U is more like a slight upgrade than a brand-new, full fledged HD Mario game), but first-party titles alone aren’t enough for many gamers, and they certainly aren’t appealing to 3rd party developers.

      1. i dont think any nintendo fan thinks the gamepad is a game changer…..its a bonus to being able to play Nintendo’s First party titles in HD.

As far as more power for gameplay…as epic stated..the next gen will offer what the high end pc’s today can offer….aside from visuals…there isnt anything out there in terms of game mechanics that absolutely need uber powerful processing. There just isnt anything i’ve seen on the pc that could not be done on the current gen systems in terms of gameplay (not graphics). Not even in terms of a.i. Just look at the latest aliens game, which was also released on pc, and had retarded bad a.i. Its not something that gets bettter just because of hardware. Extra hardware isnt going to magically revolutionize game mechanics and a.i. the way you seem to be implying.

The real reason Developers arent too deep into development on the wiiu right now is because its hard to learn to develop for a new system, and with all the companies wrapping up games that have been in development for years, not all can be ported over to the wiiu in such a short timespan. That combined with the fact that 3rd parties have always been cautious with nintendo consoles, primarily because of their inability to put out content that matches Nintendo’s first party efforts in gameplay and design. Which translates to lackluster sales when they are sold side by side nintendo’s own titles.

whether or not developers jump on the wiiu afterall remains to be seen. But the industry would be smart to develop on the wiiu, because the industry is seeing studios and publishers dropping like flies, and cant support the current cost of making games, not to mention the next gen that is estimated to at the very least double production costs.

As for first party titles not being enough. Well, to be quite honest. Nintendo does just fine even with its first party games being the only ones attracting customers. It may not be enough for all gamers, but Nintendo is the only one of the three that doesnt need as much 3rd party supprt as the others. And things will definitley improve in terms of support over what happened with the wii. Because for the first time in a bit, nintendo is matching the rest of the industry in feature sets. Things like shader support and such. You have developers creating engines work with everything from mobile phones to pc’s. Power will be less of an issue. Its about features sets. And on top of that, the gap in power between nintendo’s system and the next gen ones is far less than what it was between the wii and ps360. Where as before it was like 12- 15x…now its like 6x. Nintendo will always be doomed to get less 3rd party support. But this time around should be the generation it gets the most support from 3rd parties since the n64 days.

      1. development costs are expected to double to make use of the next gen hardware….as many studios you see dropping left and right these days. Expect to see more of that for developers who jump in too eagirly on these new systems.

If developers were smart. They would make the wiiu the lead development platform. Then UP-port the games to the next gen systems, using their superior hardware to push higher resolutions and fps….the industry is quite dumb though…which is why we’re seeing them fail to make profits year after year.

    1. It already IS happening, what are you talking about? Specs for both next gen consoles, when considering that the hardware is tailored specifically for the console itself and doesn’t need to support a full-fledge OS like PCs, is already going to be akin to current top-end gaming PCs.

Also, MS outlined a tentative price point of $350 for the next XBOX, which considering the hardware prices as well as the fact that try don’t have an expensive touchscreen controller to manufacture (and also don’t have to sacrifice raw power for it), it’s completely doable.

And I think you’ll find that most non-Nintendo only fanboys will gladly shell out even $400 for a console that outclasses the Wii U in every possible way, with the exception of “ooh, I can’t look down to select menu options or see a second perspective… big wow.”

      1. first off. Tentative means not finalized. Secondly, microsoft has not gone on the record with these tentative price points. Your numbers are coming from rumored leaked specs and even so, those were pounds. With it rumored at about 400 to 450 dollars here in north america.

and although it may not have an expensive touchscreen controller. If the rumors are to be believed. Its going to come with Kinect 2.0. Not optional. Mandatory. Which is bound to keep the price from hitting too low. Doesnt the current Kinect retail for about 100 bucks? So expect the 2.0 to contribute a bit to the price of the 720.

  13. I already have my next gen console (WII U)) and I am absolutely loving it! Zombi u, Mario, assasins creed, & nintendo land are satisfying my needs..

  14. Memory is a bigger issue than graphics (for developers). Nintendo thought about development costs and the challenge of making high end games and made the smart choice with Wii U.
Dunno what Epic’s thinking; being the most expensive option these days isn’t popular…

  15. If PS4 and Next Xbox cost $500, then I’m waiting until the price goes down to $300 or $250. I’m not into tech demos with subpar gameplay. But I do like Halo almost as much as Mario and Zelda and Metroid and Donkey Kong, I’ll still wait until it costs $300.

    1. Halo 5 will be amazing. As will Halo 2 Anniversary, which is all but certain and most likely will be on the 720 in 2014 for the 10-year anniversary. Probably will come out before Halo 5 as an in-between release like ODST did. And if they actually release it with the original multiplayer (which they couldn’t do for Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary because it didn’t have any XBOX Live netcode, while Halo 2 did/does), then it. Will. Be. Legendary.

  16. Aww… now all the Nintendk fanboys saying “Next XBOX/PlaySation won’t be a big leap over Wii U!” are eating crow.

Cue fanboys saying, “derp, I don’t care, Wii U forevaaaaaaarrr!” while the rest of the world enjoys REAL next-gen possibilities that go far beyond just having a second screen for poxie little menus and other shoehorned-in functionality that nobody really wants. Nintendo fanboys will continue to say it’s “errrmahgerd so cool” when really, even developers are jumping ship. It’s not a good enough gimmick to compete with better graphics, more interactive environments, much more advanced online play & options, bigger game storage, better physics, better AI, etc. That’s REALLY what excites developers, and allows them to create more immersive, interesting games… not a second screen to constantly have to look down at for arbitrary, unnecessary reasons.

Aaaaand let the grade-school level “you’re an idiot, fuck you, go fuck your mother” comments begin :)

    1. I obviously agree with you, except we know absolutely NOTHING officially about new xbox and ps4. If they are going to be significant leap over Wii U, then same situation will happen with Wii U as happened with Wii U – it will become family, grandma’s console to dance around and work out. But then it means that PS4 and Xbox will cost around 600$ again, which is unlikely in todays market

    2. your setting yourself up for dissappointment….if you think these systems are going to bring forth some revolution in game design…..they wont even be more powerful than the highest end pc’s on the market today…..just look at the best of whats out today on pc to see what the next gen has to offer in terms of graphics and gameplay…its nothing out of this world.

do yourself a favor and lower your expectations. Also, your entire post was grade school level. You being such a fanboy of microsoft’s and coming here to a nintendo site is pretty grade school of you too. Your lame. that is all

  17. PC is a platform and always will be for next gen games but it cost a big leap to our pocket for High End parts. The problems with Big companies and PC Game Developers are most of them race for next gen engines to make their game look better and realistic. Is that really what we want?
