Disney And EA Announce Multi-Year Star Wars Games Agreement

star_wars_logo

The Walt Disney Company and Electronic Arts today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines. Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

    1. Woah, not so fast. DICE makes Battlefield. Do you have any idea what that means? This could be a hint towards the future of the Star Wars: Battlefront series. Bioware made Knights of the Old Republic, maybe there’s going to be another game like that on the way.

      1. After the Bad Company 2 era, EA went full retard. Don’t get me wrong, I like DICE as a development team, just that EA isn’t what they used to be and I can’t trust their practices anymore at this point, unless they really change back to their old selves in the future otherwise.

    1. If we were talking only about EA I will agree, but the high command here is Disney, not EA, so EA have to developed the game for all consoles.

      1. Doesn’t matter which platforms they release on, EA can choke on my thingy if they think i’ll purchase anything they publish.

    2. EA is going to realese 13 starwars rehash game with a dlc every day and monthly subscription and nintendo wont get any of that shit cause they didnt want oreozon or whatever its called

  1. i heard that a star wars game is coming to the wii u now its true but ? is what star wars game is coming to the wii u? we have to see what it is

  2. Hopefully we got a real EA games. I mean it is bad enough for all gamers. Sport fans just play the same game for two years in a row. Nintendo fans only got ME3, NFS, and some few games. No more Mirror Edge and etc games. PC gamers have to use origin to play some EA games. New Simcity are a disgrace to a lot of fans out there.

    1. DICE, Visceral, and Bioware are *going to be* developing the games. Despite the hate that people have for EA, those are some great studios.

          1. Only EA and thats just a recent’ish thing, I do own other consoles other then Nintendo built and quite a few of EA stamped games, Im just finished with EA, this thing with Nintendo/Origin is very petty, thier reaction is childish and now they won’t release games on Nintendo consoles, such disrespect towards a campany that drives the industry and even saved it a few times, for everyone at one point. I could go on but I’ll spare you the obvious since nobody cares about this “stuff”. Go ahead buy your EA games, just know that, it’s because people like you will buy thier games anyways that they can even afford to get away with this unprofessional and childish behavior.

  3. I’m definitely in the minority, but I don’t think that this absolutely has to be a bad call. EA may not be the greatest company, but they can make a solid video game if they put their minds to it. It’ll be interesting to see which games come out in the near future

    1. Yea I know what you mean. I really love Mirror Edge and some NFS series. I actually like them until I start not liking recent games. I mean people love NFS, Madden, Mass Effect, Mirror Edge, Maxics games, Battlefield and etc. Hopefully that will all changes that.

    2. Huh, a comment that isn’t full of fanboy butthurt. Thanks, dreager1. :)

I’m pretty excited for what they do with the franchise. If DICE brings Battlefront III to PC, Wii U, PS4, and/or Next Xbox – I’ll be one happy camper.

DICE, Visceral, and Bioware are great devs. If EA plays their cards right, the curse of the bad Star Wars games can be broken.

    3. Yeah, your right. They can I mean look at the SIMS right? How about all the micro-transactions they were forcing in Dead Space 3 until enough people complained? How about their overall DRM system…………The fail is STRONG with deal.

  4. God damn Disney, what the HELL happened to you?!?!?! I only hope Nintendo never goes down the same road.

      1. For me, I liked the one on the N64. Forget what it was called but you played as some dude who I had always thought was Han solo lol.

        1. Must be Shadows of the Empire. lol

But that’s my point, people are saying the games are being killed now that EA has it. We have barely seen a good Star Wars game in a long time anyway. lol

That could very well change with DICE, Visceral, or Bioware developing new ones. I’m hopeful.

            1. They were okay but a little broken. Nothing spectacular. I had more fun with LEGO Star Wars than that to be honest.

Which is why I said we barely seen a good game for a while. There are a few decent ones scattered about, but nothing really that good.

                1. The last god 1 where kotor and rogue squadron also jedi academy . Still ea may be the only 1 whit enough money left after getting the ip to develope the games.

      2. SWTOR was okay but I think the community ruins the experiences. Too many closed mind WOW players which made it unfriendly to newcomers. I guess you can argue that it is the server community not the whole community. But I do like the Force Unleashed, Rogue Leaders, and even SNES Star Wars games.

  5. I understand why people immediately think negatively because it’s EA, but this could actually be brilliant. Why? Because DICE are involved, therefore Battlefront III may have a new lease of life.

    1. Exactly. That would be amazing. But I don’t want to get too excited, not yet. They just announced the deal, so we won’t be seeing any of these games for a while.

  6. DisnEA, that’s as match made in hell! Maybe they will make a mass effect themed area of Disney once EA sells out to Disney. Still wont help Nintendo Wii U!

  8. RIP SWs…and I had a dream some days ago Rogue Squadron 3 was coming exclusively to NIntendo Wii U :(

      1. I swear if they announce Star Wars Battlefront 3 for everything but the Wii U I’ll personally go down to EA and hit em with a Blizzard and a couple of Psychics!!! 💋

  9. I Miss those rogue squadron games… So we ain’t getting any of them anymore right? and we can also forget about the Dead Space series right? bad move…

  10. This could actually end up being good. I’m more concerned for there being a Disney Star Wars than an EA having their hands in the Star Wars soup. Nickle and diming and other nonsense out of the way EA does make some good games overall.

Hell, if the Wii U could get its hands on an open world Star Wars (or any open world title for that matter) that would be tremendous. Even if EA does your standard action game with the Star Wars series it would be good to see something recent and good come out of the franchise than it being dormant until Disney decides to cast Mickey as Luke, Donald as Han, and Daisy as Leia…or whatever they’ll do with Disney casting.

…oh it’ll happen and each one of you know it.

    1. Would rather have StarWars die with Disney than be destroyed by EA.

      Spore
      Battlefield 3
      Command and Conquer
      Dead Space 3
      Need for Speed

  11. The last decent Star Wars game was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on the Xbox/PC, i knew this was going to happen when it was announced Disney were getting their hands on Star Wars.

Guess with it being EA there will be no WiiU or 3DS games either.

    1. EA could change their mind and decide to bring games to the Wii U and 3DS at any time. Let’s just wait and see.

    1. This might not happen. Beside the license only last so long. I sure Disney want to released it on every consoles including Steam.

  13. Great. So Wii U will basically miss out on everything Star Wars related… -__- Why would Disney work with the “worst company in America?.” 💋

    1. EA could change their mind and decide to bring games to the Wii U and 3DS at any time. Let’s just wait and see.

  14. Gee, I’m thinking they should have chosen a “good” publisher.
Maybe Disney will put some pressure on EA to develop/publish for Nintendo.

  15. Of all the moves by Disney, this one happens to be the biggest mistake. Don’t they do background check of EA? They don’t care about the quality of games they release anymore. All they care about is money.

  16. I am dissapointed, Nintendo will probably never recieve a single title with EA being EA, most of them will never come to Steam and only through Origin. I wonder if Jar-Jar convinced Disney to work with EA….

  18. All you can go fuck yourselves, just knowing there will be more Star Wars games is great news for me, BioWare did a great job with The Old Republic, DICE made some pretty cool Battlefield games, so there you go, if you ask me, if EA’s studios do this right, we’ll see some quality Star Wars titles. I’m an optimist, not a pessimist.

  19. This is a bad thing because of EA’s politics with the DLC and whatnot, making you pay for the same unfinished game twice.
This is also a bad thing because EA has those games, and those games only, not giving anybody else a chance, much like the bullshit they pull with their sports games, being the only ones to make games with the FIFA and NFL licenses. Monopolies are never good.

HOWEVER, this is a good thing because BioWare can make great stuff, and another KOTOR would be amazing, seeing how BioWare is a competent developer.

DICE releasing a Star Wars FPS or even making another Battlefront would work, they’re capable of making shooters quite well.

Visceral can make a horror game in the Star Wars universe, a la Dead Space.

We’ll have to wait and see what they do. I don’t like EA because of their bullshit with Nintendo right now, but I will give credit where credit is due. Hope they don’t disappoint me.

  20. Dice making battlefront 3? Hellz yes!
    P. S. If any of you guys want star wars battlefront 3 to become a reality, there is a rapidly growing facebook page dedicated to getting the word out about the demand for the game. It’s at 41K people now and every like helps, it’s got a great comunity with lots of awesome ideas. Just search “who else wants star wars battlefront 3?”
