Michael Pachter: Nintendo Avoiding E3 Presentation Is A ‘Good Business Decision’

wii_u_e3_2012Famed web-analyst Michael Pachter has given Nintendo fans food for thought in his latest Pach-Attack show. This time, Pachter appears less enthusiastic about sharing his opinions, but today he’s brought Nintendo’s decision to skip their annual E3 presentation to the table, and he cuts straight to the bone.

Pachter, answering the question from twitter as to whether Nintendo’s decision to skip the E3 press conference was a good business decision, responds as follows:

“I think it is a crappy decision because you don’t get many opportunities when you’re a console manufacturer to have the entire world focused on games. So it’s the one time a year that you can be certain that everybody cares […] I think that from just a basic decision it’s an opportunity for Nintendo to really show off a lot of stuff.

“But you asked was it a good business decision and, from your basic economics, it’s a profit deal. If you’re expected revenues from spending money are bigger than the amount you have to spend to generate those revenues, then it’s a good business decision.

“I think that Nintendo gave this a lot of thought – they said we don’t really have anything new to show, […] we don’t really have any new Wii U games that are going to shine that are playable and, oh by the way, the reason that Fox News, ABC, etc, are all here is to look at the next Xbox and PS4, then we’re just going to look bad next to them.

“I think not doing it, probably, is a good business decision. I just think, as a gamer, and as someone who is interested in the industry, I would prefer to see everybody represented at every show. Nintendo made a business decision, and ultimately, it is probably the right one.”

So, Pachter believes it is a good business decision for Nintendo to avoid an E3 presentation this year, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

    1. Instead, he works for your moronic company, Microsoft. Now, go order me a pizza, troll!

      1. ill order that pizza and shove it in the wii u disc drive and get more for out of that than nintendo land

        1. Of course, buying something to ruin it is so intelligent, like, you give them money and then lose any value you could have gotten for it.
It’s just so smart it amazes me, you lose money for the single purpose of becoming poorer, great idea there man.

    2. Idiot Shigeru Miyamoto alone is more creative than Dice, Visceral, EA sports division and all companies that release broken games on day one. You are stupid enough to pay for xboxlive, you do not even deserve to call any other human stupid.

  1. “we don’t really have any new Wii U games that are going to shine that are playable and, oh by the way, the reason that Fox News, ABC, etc, are all here is to look at the next Xbox and PS4, then we’re just going to look bad next to them.”

Yet another prediction from the king of early BS predictions.
Bravo, Pachter. Keep that streak running.

    1. Pachter is already wrong because they are reveiling a trailer for Smash Bros. <Automatic win for Nintendo right there!!! 💋

          1. The problem and reason why Nintendo isn’t doing a big presentation is cause outside of the gaming community less people know what E3 is than that a Wii U is a new system. The customers they need to get to are not watching E3, I mean look how little they got out of last year.

            1. nintendo ID: Hellstrike

THANK YOU FOR BEING A THINKING PERSON I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE ON THIS SITE (no joking)

  2. I acturallyvagree, but I still don’t get the whole, we have no games to show when clearly they have plenty of content that could easily to compete against Xbox 8 and ps4

    1. Nintendo can have a zelda and peach having lesbian sex game and still is not goin to get the media attention so the best tactics is to force them to pay attetion by making them play the games.

      1. nintendo ID: Hellstrike

They should be getting enough media attention as long as they have a large enoughaudience for the media to be watched and be profitable. Plus that lesbian thingy would be #1 in the news and you know it, even if it received negativity from angry parents and stupid news anchors. nuff said

  3. Don’t have any Wii U games that will shine? Got a whole list of excitement this year! Wind Waker with a new Zelda title. Mario Kart and Mario 3D and so much others that could really boost it up. I don’t think he understands Nintendo fans at all because I am stupid excited that a lot of their big titles are coming out in one big year.

    1. None of those 3 games you mentioned excite me any bit. I’m bored of Mario and Zelda games. Wind Waker was such an easy game when I played that years ago on the Gamecube I didn’t die a single time when I beat the game the very first time. How pathetic is that.

      1. So Nintendo is not for you. Go find a site that centers around games and hardware you DO like.

        I loved Windwaker.
The gameplay, the music, the story – Amazing.

        1. Im so proud to have played when it got originaly released on gamecube. It means my gaming taste was above my age at that time.

        2. C’mon! of course wind waker was an awesome game. However, it is also true that i wont catch most people’s attention since it’s not a new game. It’s normal that people will concentrate on the ps4 and the new xbox , they’re new devices. Finally, i’d like to say that Nintendo must create something really new, appart from mario and zelda, a complete new game with different characters. Mario, luigi, zelda, fox and the others are overused, arent they?

      2. And what about he new “X” from Monolith, and oh, The Shin Megami and Fire Emblem Mix? I am really looking forward to this two games.

      3. So Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Gears of War, and Call of Duty hasn’t gotten boring yet? Truth of the matter is, a game is if it provides nothing new in gameplay. While you might get tired of seeing Mario, what makes Mario continuously relevant, is how Nintendo consistently find new ways to play. Whereas with the competition, it’s the same old gameplay as usual.

      4. 64supermarioreturns

That sums up my opinion about most new generation games, but seriously if you want a challenge go play Contra on the DS, that shit will rock you.

      5. Retro Studios game and Bayonetta Two and Yoshi Land U and Monoliths X game and Miyamotos new IP and Smash Bros…none of that gets you excited them your not a gamer.

    2. nintendo ID: Hellstrike

you forget the “and be playable”. Its not that what youre saying is not true though

  4. Well you can’t deny he’s right this time. They would pale in comparison to Sony and Microsoft this year. Would you rather hear about 1-2 new games or 2 entirely new systems? The media will cover the PS4/Next XBox to death and Nintendo no matter what they’d show would “lose” E3 because their hardware is already out. Its better Nintendo saves money and separates themselves from the competition. I said this before and it remains true. Not even Smash Bros would drive the same hype that PS4/XBox will. Nintendo is playing this smart.

    1. There’s a difference between saying Nintendo has nothing to compare with in terms of systems, and saying that they don’t have any games to show period.
Which is precisely what he insinuated.
He’s an anti-Nintendo creep, pure and simple.

      1. Doesn’t change the fact he’s right. It is a smart move by Nintendo. Would you really want them to be the laughing stock of E3 for…what the 5th year running? I swear people jump to conclusions with Pachter. Not that I like him really, but in this case he’s right. Maybe Nintendo should jump back in next year, but this year its a warzone between Sony and Microsoft that Nintendo doesn’t need to walk in the middle of.

        1. That’s like saying they should just give up for the rest of the year and let the ps4/72 walk all over for them, your idea of “he’s right, they have no games to show” is terrible. Should the 3DS have let the Vita walk all over them and release no 3D Mario/MK for the holidays? Nope. All i see in the “warzone” between Sony and MS ar ejust them crashing each other while letting Nintendo reap the holidays. They NEED to go all out on the holidays, they will have big games to show. Don’t deny it.

          1. That is what Nintendo Direct is for. So they can still drive up their own hype, but on a separate playing field away from Sony and Microsoft. If Nintendo had a large scale E3 presentation, they’d be wearing only tinfoil armor. Yes, Mario U and Smash Bros will be great, but they won’t compare to 2 entirely new consoles. Especially since the media already thinks the Wii U is a joke. They can still get their own hype at E3 in the form of Nintendo Direct where they won’t be viewed as competing against Sony and Microsoft. Its better this way for this year. Now next year when the consoles will have been out for over half a year? Ok yeah then Nintendo is safe to hold a huge conference, but this year? It’d be beyond stupid.

        2. @Keith..Laughing stock for 5th year in row? Nah, I don’t think so. Maybe the last 2, but in 2009 when Nintendo introduced the 3DS, they literally won E3. I remember, the press and fans were all over it. Anyhow, since Sony has virtually introduced the PS4, and Microsoft set to introduce their next console prior to E3, I don’t think the press is going to be as giddy as people think. While they both will garner a certain amount of attention, I think Microsoft and Sony are going to focus on introducing games more so. Why? Because this is what Nintendo will be doing. Fans like myself care about games! If the games seem interesting, then the console it’s on will seem interesting as well!

          1. You forget we still need to hear these details: Price, bundles, launch lists, release dates, more info on Gaikai, etc. Besides there’s rumor that the Final Fantasy game hinted mentioned at PlayStation Meeting back in February will be exclusive to PS4, which – if its better than recent FFs – would generate a lot of hype. Sony nor Microsoft haven’t played their full hands. They still some moves left, moves that Nintendo themselves can’t make because of the Wii U already being out. Some really nice system updates can be expected, but those are updates, those aren’t things that press nor even a lot of fans care for. Besides having already mentioned Mario U and Mario Kart U, there’s only 1 real “wow” factor they have left – Retro’s game. Which while it’ll be a good game I’m sure, is expected and won’t be a huge shocker. Let Nintendo step back this year and have Nintendo Directs so they aren’t directly competing for attention and they’ll do better. They’ll be seen in a positive light if they don’t go head-to-head with Sony and Microsoft.

    2. You are right.. Nintendo showcased their system last E3 so why should they waste that much money to show just games?. The spotlight was on Nintendo last year, let the other two get theirs dis year. The race begins after E3 which Nintendo has a headstart of mistake and fixes for their system. Let see what Sony and Microsoft accomplish when they arrive with their consoles

    3. They “lost” it even when they did have new hardware, it’s just biased anyway and I don’t even care about who “wins” because in the end it’s about the investors not gamers

  5. Nintendo has a presentation. They have one for the investors and people who care about that stuff. Then theres one for the gamers. Where’s the down side? Who gets left out? Because they won’t take the stage and do something in front of EVERYONE. Oh speaking of which, who is everyone? People in the gaming Biz. Investors will be at that meeting, they matter. Then people who like the games will see that meeting the only downside I see is that there is no LIVE presentation, so EVERYONE is equal when it comes to seeing Nintendo’s new games for the first time, which. is. damn. great.

  6. I think E3 is very overrated. You won’t come out to the main public through E3. You will just reach the nerds and well, we are already aware of the Wii U and pledge for more games. Nintendo needs to reach the ordinary consumer, that they won’t do in E3.

Patcher calling himself a gamer is very provocative and he doesn’t really have a clue about the game industry. He just loves all that’s american…

  7. I think E3 is a dumb idea anyway.
Why is there this one event every year where you NEED to show stuff, and have to design your game releases and production times around showing it there, it’s silly, publishers and developers should obviously reveal and show things at the right time, but not keep thing hidden for 2 years, just because of E3

      1. I agree with you on that, G. Not only that… Rockstar Games have already decided to skip E3 altogether. Their annual show isn’t what the they used to be after Nintendo’s introduction to Nintendo 3DS.

        1. I think the last good E3 that I saw was back in 2007 or 2008.

And yeah, Take Two is taking out all of their publishers and devs this year it seems. 2K and Rockstar wont be there. Although Rockstar tends to skip E3 frequently, 2K is usually there. This year, they wont be.

  8. Why does this man continue to get coverage? Anyhow, Nintendo is playing this smart. Not just from a financial standpoint, but from a fan standpoint. E3 has become painful to watch. As a fan, you have to sit through all this boring stuff until we’re presented through the good stuff. If Nintendo does this right, they could make E3 feel fresh again!

      1. That’s what I’ve been saying all along but no one listens. They will still be at E3 just not have as big as a presence as previous years.

  9. It’s hard to understand what Nintendo is thinking. Nintendo has done many unexplainable things before that everyone thought would lead them to failure, but ultimately made them what they are today. I think it was the right decision, but not for the reason Pachter says. I think they have something under their sleeves to show us that will put the PS720 into obscurity!

    1. nintendo ID: Hellstrike

while i understand what youre saying, what exaxctly are you expecting? i would be fine with just the next smash brothes, zelda , X etc. if you get your hopes up too much you might get disappointed

  10. Aren’t they doing a conference at the nokia place? I seem to remember that they are doing a few smaller ones which means they might be able to undermine the other companies E3’s by timing them right with the right announcements. If they did a major announcement everyday for three days then you would have 3D Mario, Mario kart and Super smash brothers. On the third day they would end it with an amazing Zelda announcement, that would stay in everyone’s head’s. Now I am probably wishful thinking but this would be something to see.

    1. Yeah, you’ve actually a point. They’ll be there but not hosting a major press conference as they usually do. They’ll probably do something like you said.

    1. People don’t “Win” E3 these days, and I think I read somewhere it’s expensive to participate.

The last few E3’s have been disappointing in my opinion. I’ll just keep my eyes on the Nintendo Directs.

  11. Talking of advertising I watching ITV 4 cricket and a Wii u ad comes on, out of all the games they could advertise Lego inbetween cricket, how many kids are watching cricket, what about mass effect of call of duty?

    1. Because LEGO City is a newer (and exclusive) game than CoD and ME3. Personally, they should have shown MH3U instead.

  12. I don’t agree Nintendo doesn’t have anything to show. We know for a fact they’re going to show the successor to the highest selling game ever (MK wii) and the successor to the highest rated games ever (Galaxy 1 and 2) . They also have a remake of one of the best games ever (windwaker) and a sequel to the best JRPG of this gen (Xenoblade chronicles). And the list goes on.

    1. Even something from Retro studios they are keeping a secret, I think Nintendo has a lot to show this E3 we just have to wait to see what they got up there sleeves.

      1. I think instead of trying to “Wow” people at E3, they may do better to fly under radar (As they are doing), and steal some of MS and Sony’s thunder by Announcing some big-hitting games.

        ;)

    2. But then he and many others will just say those games are just sequels and rehashes of old games despite that is much of what Sony and Microsoft will have to show… The next CoD, Halo, Killzone, etc….

    3. Sky Grounder [@ Wii U]

      And Super Smash Bros.
That game is popular even among non-Nintendo gamers (from my experience).

  13. I love how he adds this:

” we don’t really have any new Wii U games that are going to shine that are playable and, oh by the way, the reason that Fox News, ABC, etc, are all here is to look at the next Xbox and PS4, then we’re just going to look bad next to them.”

He thinks Nintendo is going to look bad against the PS4 and NextBox… I do not think that is what Nintendo is thinking and they will have new games that ARE playable at E3. They announced that they will have some due for later summer and fall releases.

I think Nintendo rather have the media and E3 attendees actually play and use the system rather than talk and brag about what the system allegedly will do.

    1. Very true. How come a games industry analyst have missed that Nintendo’ll be at E3 and have new games playable?

      1. Because Pachter is a terrible analyst… he threw in insults to Nintendo and made up his reason why Nintendo is not going to stand up on stage and do nothing but talk and talk. Nintendo likes to “do” not just talk about “doing”

Don’t get me wrong, the PS4 and NextBox will be impressive pieces of technology but I fail to see what the PS4 is bringing to the table that is really new or innovative and Microsoft looks like it is trying based on the IllumiRoom demo to actually change the way people game but that comes at a cost and is in the future even after the NextBox is released so for now it is just all “talk”

        1. I’ve seen a pattern in his analyses: All that’s american is good and the rest sucks ass. That’s why Xbox is the best console, in his opinion, that’s why SmartGlass replace the function of the WiiU Gamepad, that’s why Nintendo of Japan sucks ass but Nintendo of America is great though they are suppressed by Japan and therefore can’t deliver, this is his thought even though Nintendo have great sales in Japan and struggles in USA. And that’s why he thinks Apple and Google will crush handhelds though the 3DS and even Vita shows him difference.

  14. Nintendo Commander

Don’t fall for his Xbot words my friends…

When he says “A good business decision”, he really means it’s a good business decision for the Xbots since he truly believes that their upcoming new evil machine will triumph everything…

I wasn’t impressed by the PS4 reveal at all and there is 0% chance the Xbots will in any way other than possibly increase their stupidity…

  15. And here we go again, the big motherfucker opening their mouth again, Michael, Just shut the fuck up, SHUT THE FUCK UP!, who gives a fuck about what you “predict” or “think” about others businesses? Leave Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft alone!.

  16. “I think it is a crappy decision because you don’t get many opportunities when you’re a console manufacturer to have the entire world focused on games.”

MOST nintendo true gamers are unphased by Moronic ideologue or propagandistic banta. We are simply going to be amazed at the known fact that we all have 1 000 000 dormant brain cells that contain more intelligence than Pachter.

    1. Nintendo Commander

Those are some nice words there my friend…

How are you doing?, besides getting “bombarded” by the Pachter creature…

  17. Well they are having a presentation for investors and business partners and a press event prior to opening the show floor. So not exactly sure what the issue is.

Instead of 1 big conference they are having 2 smaller ones and will probably have a Nintendo Direct or two.

    1. I’m hoping that the Nintendo Directs are just to get the smaller or already announced games out of the way, and allow the actual E3 conference to be for new games.

  18. In fact Pachter, you’re dead wrong. Economics is not based on up-front cost, but long term revenue. You say that spending money they may need is a bad idea, this is false and would be thought of by a 5 year old. In fact, the truth is, the more they’d invest in hype, the more income they’d receive. Look at the Wii, so much ads, hype, for a weak machine with little, to no games at launch, and yet it’s sales dwarf those of the WiiU in the same period. Pachter thinks he is smart, but in reality he is a puppet real analysts laugh at.

  19. Pingback: Pachter: Nintendo skipping E3 press conference Is A ‘Good Business Decision’ | Cvgworld

  20. Seems I underestimated Pachter’s inane Nintendo bias, I was expecting him to say it was a stupid idea (which it is) and that Nintendo is screwed.

He’s dead wrong about “not having anything new to show”, they’ve got plenty of great new games to show off which will certainly boost their console sales. They need that big conference to draw people’s attention to them, especially for whatever Wii U games they’ll be revealing.

  21. “I think that Nintendo gave this a lot of thought – they said we don’t really have anything new to show, […] we don’t really have any new Wii U games that are going to shine that are playable and, oh by the way, the reason that Fox News, ABC, etc, are all here is to look at the next Xbox and PS4, then we’re just going to look bad next to them.”

This is completely false. They didn’t say that at all. And they actually do have playable games at E3, namely Mario and Mario Kart and who knows what else.

  22. SherlockWillFightBilbo

TIBasically, they can’t compete with two new console reveals. SSB4 won’t be there as a demo, and I doubt Zelda for Wii U will, either. I agree with Pachter for the most part but these Mario games and two Zeldas ARE games. They alone can’t compete but they are still games.

But they really don’t need E3 because only gamers have heard about the Wii U. They need to reach those who haven’t heard or the gamers who haven’t tried it. There’s no point spending a bunch of money on a mediocre presentation Directed to the people who know about it already.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

But at the same time, they need to make the large amount of gamers who haven’t bought a Wii U WANT one.

  23. I do not know about you guys, but Pachter is right and I have said the same thing before. Nintendo wins more by focusing on gameplay testing than having a big conference. What the Wii U needs is people actually daring to try it out because most people I have met who have tried it liked the game pad ALOT.

So yeah, this is where Nintendo needs to put their focus, their gameplay.

  24. Pingback: The biggest Anti Nintendo sites - Page 2

  25. I thought Nintendo said they were bringing out new games for the Wii U to be shown and played at E3 and pictures (maybe gameplay) of the Next Super Smash bros. So then why does Pachter say that he thinks Nintendo has nothing new to show on the Wii U this E3?

  26. I begin to wonder what are the fees for presenting a press conference at E3?
If Nintendo are feeling the pinch monetarily, it must ‘cost an arm and a leg’ to book a conference before all the world’s gaming press like this.
But as long as it saves Nintendo’s bacon and keeps them in business, at least i’ll have plenty more Nintendo games and features to enjoy for years to come.

  27. And again, even when Pachter claims Nintendo made ”a good decision”…he’s terribly misinformed.
”they don’t have anything to show so going would be a waste”? Are you serious?

  28. Pingback: Y que opina Michael Patcher acerca de Nintendo y el E3 | TierraGamer

  29. Depends on if they think the increase in revenue they’d get from marketing after having a conference would be higher than the costs involved. Evidently they didn’t think it would as they aren’t holding a conference, but whilst I know the costs involved are higher than you’d think, I’m skeptical as to whether the cost outweighs the potential increase in revenue.
