iOS Game Spending Alone Outpaces Nintendo 3DS And PlayStation Vita In Q1 2013

iphone_5_white_black

Research firms IDC and App Annie have both conducted a study which found that tablet and smartphone gaming on Apple products have eclipsed Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita software sales during the first quarter of 2013. This is the first time that iOS game sales alone have beaten the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Previously it was iOS App Store and Google Play store combined that had outsold dedicated gaming handheld sales.

      1. Our sheeps need to be more aggressive to hype this game, so more people will be willing to shell their money out for Sony. Thanks to N4G.com, the ultimate Sony “church” where its’ members are preaching you all 24/7 in every Playstation® news.

No negative comments is allowed, WE DON’T ACCEPT ANY CRITICISM – we just accept your money for our GAMES. The more you buy Sony’s products, the better our faithful sheeps can sleep.

      1. Doubt it. These systems aren’t really in competition. Also iOS just had a couple huge games released in the last year that are apparently doing very well. The market share of iPhones is also much larger then nearly every other market in the world.

      2. TheTrruth4thaHaters

Yeah right lmao. The thing is obvious here, that more people carry phones than handhelds lol. So what? There’s plenty of game love to go around lol.

    1. I personally don’t enjoy iOS or Android games but obviouslt many people do. I don’t think that makes them stupid.

      1. Most seem to buy/download a game play it once then rarely if ever touch it again. But it’s another angry birds game (star wars) and Suda 51 has their huge game, not an iOS player so I can’t remember the name lol.

  1. This comparison is absolutely pointless. Of course there’s going to be more spending on smartphone gaming than dedicated handhelds, because there’s probably more than 100 times the amount of iPhones and Androids than 3DSs and Vitas. Give me a figure that would say the profits from handheld gaming are going down significantly, then I’ll pay attention.

  2. How many IOS or android games have sold 8 million copies for $39:99 each and can actually be deemed real games ? (or even the 15-20 Million copes at $39:99 that the DS did)

Might as well have a survey saying – 500 million people are playing shovelware on Facebook.

    1. Well, I think the purpose of this information is more for those who are in the business. It is pertinent information for many devs and publisher.

For example, EA made over $10 million on a free to play iOS game (The Simpsons Tapped Out) in March alone. The game consists of micro and macrotransactions. If they had opted to put it on the Vita or 3DS, chances are they wouldn’t have made the same amount from the game.

For gamers, we really don’t care. We play games on our dedicated handhelds no matter what. For publishers, they’ll still cater to dedicated handheld systems as well. Still, it lets more people know that there is a booming market for mobile games if they decide to get into that business (or if they’re already there).

      1. Yeah you’re right.

Nintendo will never be able to be stopped in the handheld market. I think there will be a point where Dedicated gaming devices become cooler , it’s happening now.

You look smoking hot playing a 3DS or a vita on the bus instead of shit on your touch screen…

        1. In my mind – I have always thought that the clamshell design of the DS/3DS looks much better in public than playing on a PSP/Vita. ._.

Somehow, it looks more private, personal, professional, and elegant (especially when in use with the stylus lol).

          1. Agreed.

I’m seeing a few people playing their 3DS’s around Manchester (quite a few actually) and you can sense that feeling of smug that they have which is like ”yeah I have a Samsung or an Iphone , but I Game on a 3DS . Bitch!”

              1. It’s like that episode of South park where they all sniffing their own farts ,lol.

Yeah… you know what I’m saying though. I’m starting to notice something that people playing 3DS in public stand out. Everyone flicking shit around on their touchscreens just looks gay.

That’s why I think Nintendo is invincible in this space , ESPECIALLY with IP’s like Pokemon , Zelda , Mario and more.

Sony should be able to carve out their own space in that market aswell as they are doing in Japan.

        2. know what, youre actually right, i see tons of people waiting on the buss with phones playing temple run or angry birds, and people ignore them because its the same ole same ole, but when they see me with my 3DS playing Sticker Star, or on my vita playing Golden Abyss they always try to sneek peaks XD its hilarious

      2. Simply G, my goodness today you’re right. NintEdward great argument and breakdown for the searching minds out there. This is how you two should educate the masses on mynintendonews. Great work fellas.

      1. LOL -_- i’m not an apple fanboy. I just like them. I dont like them as much as Nintendo and Sony though.

        1. Don’t worry about it. Nova hates everyone and everything. If you say you like something he says it sucks and you are stupid or the like. Apple is fine, Android is fine, Blackberry is fine, Windows phone is fine. They are all smart phones and generally do the same thing, not really meant for games and don’t overly do it very amazingly.

            1. Well actually, I see a lot of casuals on dedicated handheld consoles … You’d be suprised how many gamers actually play on iOS. There are some pretty decent games on there.

              1. Decent yes. But a handful of casuals usually go for cheap. That is one of the major reasons why Wii sold so well. IOS games are pretty inexpensive, usually ranging from Free-9.99$ You however may be right about the casuals but IOS has the lead over the handhelds because of the cheap games it carries.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I agree. I like Android and iOS games because they’re free, but I’ll never ever pay for a game. An app that I would use often? Maybe. But not for a stupid, crap game.

        1. Sony Electronics division? or Sony Computer Entertainment division? Same company, different divisions, different devices. Get the facts right next time noob ;)

          1. I think the point he was making (although not quite accurate) is that Sony doesn’t have to worry about smartphone games encroaching on their handheld games because they too are heavily invested in mobile gaming in addition to dedicated gaming.

            See: PS Mobile, Sony Mobile

  3. 1. The amount of people that own a phone is dramatically higher.
    2. How many of these games have “Pay $5 for a pack of 50 MEGA COINS, because our game is designed to make you wait, or take way too long to get anywhere.

Mobile market and video game market are 2 different things, one does not mean the doom of another, so long as people are somewhat intelligent, and dont buy into corporate media bullshit.

  4. Sure, you have to eventually replace your old Smartphone when the bottom gets too corroded or a firmware update makes it unusable. Dedicated gaming handhelds, however, are made to last longer than that, thus less purchases over a more spread-out amount of time.

  5. This is simple math people. Everyone owns a smartphone now even kids. Do people want to carry more than one device in their pockets? No they don’t.

    1. Correction: There is a lot of casual gamers who enjoy iOS gaming. Someone having a diffrent taste in games than you doesn’t make them stupid.

  6. IOS “gamers” are disgusting with no real TASTE of REAL games, I can’t believe, this is disgusting! Eww…

    1. I know right, I’m playing the Walking dead which got over 80 GOTY awards! Ew! I must have no taste in games!

        1. I play it on the iPad. I have it on PC too. iPad in my opinion is the best version for a game like this.

  7. which means…? nothing. These app stores are a blue ocean of software, Free-to-play and minimum charged games like $ 0.50 doesn’t offer the same content as 3DS and Vita games. It’s just too cheap and there’s a huge amount of smartphones on people’s hands.

Also, They will never be a “main” platform for games, let them dream… It’s still a cellphone with games. It offer games because it’s profitable, not because it was created to do it.

  8. Awww! Doodle jump, fruit ninja. It’s nice that everyone that had a home phone can now buy a $0.99 game. Game demographic 2000 50 to 70 million individuals. 2013, it’s about 120 core gamers. Nintendo expanded the industry, but the big three should remember casuals are fickle, the move on. Core gamers are always wise, and hardcore gamers are dumb and pay for xboxlive and hackers paradise PSN.

  9. Well it makes sense. IOS games people can play on the train or bus on the way to school/work or even during lunch break. Portable consoles like the GBA were possible to play on the way as well, but now that the consoles are getting bigger (And less portable) people probably wouldn’t bring their consoles outside anymore. I know that I don’t take my PS3 or PSP outside. Way too risky!

    1. It’s not so much about being special. It’s more so about availability.

Most people in developed lands have smartphones these days. So they already have access to these games at the fingertips without having to search out or carry a new piece of hardware specifically for gaming.

Generally speaking, these are individuals who may not consider themselves hardcore gamers and are looking for something to kill their time on.

    2. JTZ! { jtz }, nice for you to voice your mind in print. You and two other smart nintendo gamers that contribute every three months are always needed on a topic such as this. It educates the masses of nintendo gamers and resident Sony and Microsoft fans alike.

    1. No thank you, I already have the REAL beast here, I don’t need this stupid emulator for phones.

  10. You guys do know that today people that never had cell phones, even home phones, have a smart phone? Those people now realize the can buy a cheap $0.99 or $0.30 game. It was always going to be imperative that casual games like doodle jump would have more games sold. Their are millions of iOS users planet wide. Compared to only millions of dedicated user brand real video gamers. Argument closed moving on.

  11. well moms and dads and naive teenage girls are probably the reason why this happened. still won’t stop we real gamers from enjoying our 3ds/psv.

  12. Based on what numbers, the amount downloaded or actually sales which are completely impossible to track without a retail SKU. Or is based on US sales alone, which again doesn’t account for digital downloads cause they don’t track those for videogames noir do the big 3 release sales unless its a marketing bullet point?

If you even talk to developers or read interviews with them in the field who do both iOS and eShop, the story is pretty much always the opposite when it comes to profit, even in the $2 range.

Guess what I am calling total bullshit on their numbers being correct.

  13. Only one difference, on ISO many games are garbage (watch IGN’s iphone garbage) and are free, only some of them have the balls to ask for 100$ just to buy ammo, not to forget that thouse games are also garbage (again, watch IGN’s iphone garbage), with that much money you can buy 3 3ds games, that are AAA quality. SO yea, there are a lot more people getting garbage and free games on ISO than on nintendo 3ds.

  14. Sales? What about in terms of revenue? Also, even if iOS devices eclipse Nintendo ad Sony in terms of sales, it doesn’t mean the 3DS and Vita are irrelevant. You don’t have to be the “best” to do well and make money. 💋

  15. The only people buying these games is parents to distract children 3-6 years old. Instead of critiquing them, Nintendo should make games like this on eShop and advertise them as simple educational experiences and fun games for children.

  16. this is just stupid, obviously when the software or apps are so much cheaper on ios and android compared to on 3ds an vita, sheesh

  17. thats cool. now Iphone and tablets go back to what you was made for you know ring ring Hello. and boop, You got mail!. its not even an handheld its a phone and tablet that cant even be used like a real controller or a handheld. the touchscreen isnt gonna get you that far, like streetfighters IV for example you gotta play the game with button I tried to play with the touchscreen it didnt go so well. thats why apple products will stay in a separet category called web games while console’s and handheld’s would be in the gaming category like real games are.

  18. T-Mobile just got the iPhone last month, so that could be part of why there was an increase in iOS sales. But really, microtransactions and the amount of apps they have, it’s no surprise. But there still aren’t games of the quality that Nintendo 3DS and Vita games are. And not all apps are games, so they really need to get over the comparison of handheld games and phone junk.
