With 4K televisions making a big impact at technology trade shows and being supported by the PlayStation 4, it will be interesting to see how consumers will react to it. Miyamoto was quizzed whether he thought Nintendo games should support the new resolution. He stated that a game like Pikmin 3 would benefit from the increased resolution to show the detail of the Pikmin moving around, but something like Zelda wouldn’t really benefit from it.
“When it comes to games, I don’t see the need for Zelda in 4K but for Pikmin, making it 4K compatible could possibly further show more small detailed Pikmin moving around, show things from an even further perspective, and being able to see more may make a more fun game.”

Well the PS4 can output anything in 4k res except for games.
They upscale to 8k if they want, they can’t upscale the gameplay.

Actually they can if they Upscale to 4k which is actually better looking because it still looks amazing because the more modern consoles such as the Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One all have a native resolution of 1080p which when upscaled to 4k actually looks good, unlike the last generation which they upscaled to 1080p from 480p
Even the PC has a hard time rendering games in 4K mate.
I currently run a 4K display on a 6GB dual GPU Graphics card and even my card has a hard time to run most games in 4K propperly.

360 and PS3 had a native resolution of 720p, could upscale to 1080i. Some games were 1080p native, as well as Blu Rays on the PS3. The Wii had 480p native.

First the industry wanted us to adopt 3DHD TVs, now 4K TVs are entering the scene. 1080p already looks unbelievably HD for me. I don’t think I need a new expensive TV until maybe the next thing comes out and future generations will think 4K looks like crap.

No, it’s highest output is 1080p.ironically, it’s highest internal resolution is higher than 1080p, which is really saying something, on a day were a developer will sell you 1080p as 4k, but nobody even looks at Nintendo, when they can actually get their games to run higher than what they tell you… They should market that.

4K broadcast in the US is looking like it will be another 6-8 years away, so I would even think about it yet. Besides RED cameras, the rest of the industry is really catching up to 4K, I think a good rig still cost like 50K.

you can render at any resolution you like.. the question is however if it makes sense
4K is exactly twice the vertical and horizontal resolution of 1080p.. so a 1080p image will look just as good on a 4K screen as it would on a 1080p screen
however if you take an intermediate resolution image quality may deteriorate due to the need for interpolation (can’t simply have 1 pixel occupy 4 pixels on the 4K display like you can with a 1080p image, you need to interpolate pixels) so if you’re very unfortunate it may end up not looking any better than a 1080p image
that being said it’s very unlikely that xbox one or PS4 will render at anything other than 1080p
maybe they will be able to handle 2D games at 4K resolution (and maximum 30fps since hdmi 1.4 doesn’t allow any more) but certainly nothing with elaborate 3D graphics

Please no Nintendo, the average consumer cannot purchase a 4k television as of yet. For the most part, people are just still transitioning from CRT televisions, and some still have 720p tv’s. What with the ps3 I bought last year, the $500 I put into my gaming PC, my mothers 3DS and my 3DS XL, PS4, Xbox One, and about $700 worth of video game preorders, not to mention retro game collecting which I do on am almost daily basis, my money resources are tapped to the max, and a new damn television is the LAST thing to purchase on my agenda. Bring the price of the 4K televisions down to lets say $300 for a 26in television, and I would buy one, but there’s not a snowball chance in Hell that the average consumer will be early adopters and purchase a 4K television for at the very least, 10 more years, or until the price drops to being affordable.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I would love like hell to own the sweetest rez tv out there, I’m always dabbling with PC game graphics mods that push my current television screen. I get it, the better looking, well, the better, but no Nintendo, back down boy, please don’t.
But I tell you what, IF Sony and MS do adopt 4k compatibility, and the Wii U is in fact capable of delivering 4k signals, then go for it. I wouldn’t mind playing Pikmin in 4k, I just gotta drop $4k to do so.

while it may be capable of delivering 4K signals (and that’s already very unlikely) it certainly won’t be capable of delivering elaborate 3D graphics such as those of pikmin 3 in 4K… no way in hell
