Bloomberg has spoken to a number of analysts after it emerged that both Microsoft and Sony sold more game consoles in 24 hours than the Wii U maker did in nine months. The majority of analysts questioned whether Nintendo would be able to sell 9 million Wii U consoles. In reality, Nintendo is expected by analysts to sell 6.5 million Wii U machines this fiscal year.
“They steadfastly refuse to consider that the product is not interesting to consumers,” Michael Pachter, a Los Angeles-based analyst with Wedbush Securities Inc., said in an e-mail. “They will fail to hit 9 million, and they will likely miss their profit goals.”
“Wii U has become a game console only for Nintendo fans,” Eiji Maeda, an analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. in Tokyo, said by phone. “Wii U needs groundbreaking software to draw casual and hardcore gamers. The company will sell 6.5 million Wii U machines this fiscal year.”
“Nintendo’s home-console sales are stagnating even as U.S. demand for video games is increasing. U.S. sales of both physical and digitally delivered games grew 17 percent in the three months ended in September, Port Washington, New York-based researcher NPD Group Inc”
“The PS4 and Xbox One are more likely to collect software because third parties create them for core gamers,” Yusuke Tsunoda, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities Co. in Tokyo, said by phone. “It’s meaningless for third parties to take risks by developing games for the Wii U.”
“It’s going to be difficult for Nintendo to sell 9 million Wii U consoles this fiscal year,” Maeda said. “Iwata needs to plan what to do next year if the performance this year isn’t good.”

I think this attitude is a bit overly dramatic to be honest.
Sure the Wiiu looks like its going to be trounced by the PS4 and maybe Xbox one in lifetime sales, but I don’t think Nintendo really gives a shit about those guys. Their priority is to be sustainable as a business. The Gamecube sold low but it was sustainable and they profited on each console sold and sold lots of Software. If Nintendo can do something similar or better with Wiiu, then you have no reason to start panicking and thinking the universe is going to implode for Nintendo just because the console is under performing.
Also, the Wiiu will make a comeback. how big of a comeback remains to be seen but it will improve almost definitely, That is unless people just don’t want to play the likes of Smash and Mario kart etc for some strange reason.
Is the Wiiu under perfoming ? Yep, it is. Can it turn things around and at least become somewhat successful without permanently having to be measured up against the sales of its competitors? Absolutely.

Me too! But, what I care about most for NIntendo consoles is the Quality of Exclusives. The Nintendo 3DS is one of Nintendo’s best ever platforms in that respects, its 2.5 years old and already has countless, excellent games. The Wiiu is 1 and has some very very good games! And hopefully by the time it’s 2.5 like the 3DS is now it will have a library of exclusives like the 3DS’s.
In regards to third party games and multiplats, I’ve spent my whole life playing and expecting them other platforms and whilst I would like Nintendo to improve in that respect, I have a PS4 now so I don’t really care :)

They must advertise not only what the Wii U is, but the variety of games it has in its library. Yes it is family friendly but what about these “core” gamers. Show them they can play off tv or show what the gamepad can do to make their expierences more enjoyable. But all the while I’m still irritated how everyone bashes a Nintendo console when it’s in a dire situation yet eventually they get proven wrong and continue to do so when the next one comes out. The Wii U’s ‘failure’ is primarily due to awful advertising. Yes they do indeed need to show off what the Wii U can do (properly) to be successful with the console this generation, otherwise it’s going to severely fall behind, which is what we’ve seen today with Xbone/ps4 overtaking it in lifetime sales. All in all i think its going to be hard for nintendo to recover from such a fall. Maybe next years games will put them back on track.

It’s going to be hard to advertise what the Wii U can do when most of the games aren’t actually doing anything interesting.
Remember, when it used to be about video games? Gamers now play stock and sales rather then the controller next to them. Its okay to not like a console if u just don’t have interest in but it gets out of hand when bash the the thing and its always on your mind. I usually get all consoles (besides the 360) . I’ll get the ps4 and xbox one some time down the road(only will get a one if they get rid of that freakin kinect). I don’t attack people because they like something I don’t. Its never good to see a company in trouble, but we shouldn’tworry about that alot. Gamers bring up that crap most of time to attack fanboys and other crap. The only time I get truly pissed at a company is when they do crap like on disc DLC. I usually ignore most of the stuff. I don’t own stock at nintendo, and most people who bash these companies don’t.Our only ability is to buy or not buy. While i don’t object to ways to improve business, i sometimes do as well, we shouldn’t always do stuff like that as gamers. we built a wall around us like the freakin political parties. Guys, let’s not hide and pretend that the Wii U isn’t failing from a business perspective. It is. The truth is it’s failing because the general public suck. The PS4 and Xbone are glorified underpowered PCs. There is no reason to buy them, and yet people are. For this reason I question how successful I actually want Nintendo to be. Being successful doesn’t actually mean you have a good product. It means you have convinced the idiotic general public that owning your product makes them cool. To do that you have to shittify your product clearly.
With all that being said, as long as Nintendo are successful enough to sustain their hardware business then I’m happy. Anything on top of that is a bonus, as long as it doesn’t come with a sacrifice to the quality.

Firstly yes it will see 2014 and beyond for say aprox. 5 years. Its already selling better than the Gamecube, which in the US was always in stock.
If its in low stock in the US in many stores it means its selling really well cause they don’t have a manufacturing shortage like the new systems (every time a new system comes out they have a shortage).
If Wii U doesn’t succeed, Nintendo investors will be furious and Iwata will be sacked. Iwata likes his job, so the Wii U will succeed sooner or later. My bets on later.

I doubt any of Nintendo’s popular franchises will improve the Wii U’s sales significantly. 3D World didn’t, Wind Waker HD didn’t, Pikmin 3 didn’t. The Wii U is pretty much a box for hardcore fans of Nintendo’s first-party exclusives. Unfortunately there is only about 15 million of those people in the world.
Pikmin was never a system seller, neither was hd ports of old video games. 3D world actually did help improve Wii U sales, just go to vgchartz. MK and Smash will surely move Wii U’s.
Nintendo still knows how to make great games, but when it comes to developing them for the gamepad… it’s a different story.

First of all, the 3DS was never selling nearly as poorly as the Wii U. Also, like you said, the 3DS doesn’t have any strong competition (although I think the Vita is a great system). Other things contributing to the 3DS’ success is the fact the system has a steady a stream of quality titles from first AND third parties, also a price point that is relative to what the system offers you in terms of value.
When I read post like this, I just read them as saying this- “Why can’t Nintendo bring some of their great games to my console of choice that is lacking great games?” By the way I have a PS4 an there are only 2 games worth getting for it right now resogun and contrast (both are free with PS+), all the rest are shooters and most are available on Wii U. Warframe is ok and black light is decent, but what are the system sellers? The order:1886, not out until next year. Infamous 3, not out until next year. Wii U has experiences right now and more coming next year. Please don’t whine because you don’t have Nintendo games on the other platforms, the games work well on Nintendo platforms because that is what they are built around.

FIFA is a pretty great series although it’s slowed to a complete stop like Madden and NBA. Some of the new additions actually aren’t that good and are unnecessary. (Like the gamebreaks in Madden that just destroy the pacing and make each game take longer!)

Truer words have never been spoken. The only reason to own a Wii U is for it’s first party content. Any other game you want to play, you can get somewhere else (and have a better experience).
The Wii U should sell 40-60 million units at the end of it’s lifetime. 2014 will be a good year for “core” gamers with games like X and Bayonetta 2 as well as Super Smash Bros U.

What I’m really hoping for is a sequel to Kid Icarus Uprising on the Wii U, Metroid, Starfox, F-Zero, Pokemon Spinoff, Duckhunt HD, Castlevania Sidescroller, Iceclimbers 3d platformer, Punchout, Kirby, Earthbound, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Yoshi U, Waverace, basically all of those neglected ips. Also, that ip that Miyamoto-san is working on.

Once again, Eiji Maeda is spot on with this. The games just aren’t that exciting, many of them are similar to games we’ve played in the past. The Wii U lacks games that impress people, there’s simply not much of a reason to buy one unless you want more of the same. The best way they can improve this is to make games that take full advantage of the Gamepad (something that they have failed to do, which is sad considering they made it) to create new gameplay styles. Show gamers how the Gamepad actually benefits gaming. It’s a simple concept, it baffles me why they haven’t done this yet.

The facts remain facts I suppose. For example, the Wii U sales rose 625% at the launch of the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. More over, for everyone saying that the lack of hardware on the Wii U is holding Nintendo back, you’re dead wrong. For example, Super Mario 3D World has the best ranked graphics of anything on the market currently. I know that it is still a “cartoonish” type of game, but fact remains fact, it has the highest HD level, the fastest refresh times, and the highest bit count of any game on the market. I know what you’re thinking, “Oh yeah, but Ryse, the people look so real.” Yes, that fact remains, but the graphic content still falls short. We can’t chock it up to lack of hardware, because its not. It is lack of advertising, but hopefully that will all change. When you look at hardware, Nintendo completely broke the standard GBU with the addition of the clone cherry. When you can have up to 32 characters, all simultaneously controllable, it isn’t a lack of hardware, simply people more worried about sinking $1,000 into an overpriced, underpowered PC that runs windows 8 like its a new tech, and expects people like me not to notice.
