Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Won’t Be Coming To Wii U

The VGX site has inadvertently revealed that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is real, but it will only be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. IGN discovered the game a few days ago when a listing for the game appeared on Amazon Italy. The publication said it was coming to next generation consoles, but sadly it appears as though it’s skipping the Wii U. Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition should be shown tonight at the VGX awards.

Thanks to those who sent this in.

    1. If the regular version on last gen hardware, wasn’t on Wii U, I don’t know why anyone would be holding their breath for this version to be on the system.

      1. so true, i guess they were just hoping that wii u was going to get another bad port, though i didnt even like the game that much, i like it when bad ass girls stays bad ass – This is Gamer, Peace Out

        1. Haha, no. It’s Nintendo’s fault for not making the console attractive to consumers. Developers want money, and if there is no install base that is not going to give them money, they will not develop for that console.

        1. Square Enix is fucking up! And it’s not because of bringing franchises to the wii u it’s they are fumbling with certain franchises they own.

  1. This is really not fair to us Wii U owners! These 3rd party devs are to blame for poor Wii U sales, and they say they will only develop when the sales increase. Well they freaking won’t if they just jump it. Pissed off!!! FFS you fucking stupid developers!!!!!!

    1. On another note, why isn’t it coming. Don’t start using the fucking stupid excuse of Wii U being underpowered – because it fucking isn’t. Now I am getting fucking angry with all these so called 3rd party developers. It isn’t on and so annoying!!!!

      1. Yeah, I’m getting seriously pissed off, Wii U is simply drowning and no one! absolutely no one is giving a shit hand to it! Fuck you all 3rd parties, fuck you all, embrace PS4 and Xbox One, eat that shit up, because that’s all you guys can create, that’s how your stupidity affects people…I don’t know what I’m saying anymore…

      2. Yes, Wii U is WEAK. You obiviously never owned a gaming PC….. Wii U is weak as hell, im dead serious. Sub HD – HD resolution + very low to low graphics settings.

        1. You’ve obviously never owned a console before.

The original PlayStation was weaker than the N64. But, 32 bits beat 64 bits because of successful marketing (& other factors), which in turn lead to strong 3rd party support.

The PS2 was weaker than both the GameCube & the original Xbox, but it dominated because of marketing & DVD functionality, which in turn lead to strong 3rd party support (& the rise of multi-media boxes over dedicated consoles).

The Wii was weaker than both the PS3 & 360, but it dominated because of marketing & a unique way to play, which lead to strong 3rd party support, albeit the party/casual titles buried the “core gamer” titles, & the traditional controller was sold seperately & thus not supported as much as it should’ve been.

Remember, 3rd parties ain’t what they used to be. Exclusives & art design are have largely been replaced by multi-plats & photo-realism. Yet, its the bloated budgets & the lack of artistry & exclusivity that has thrown many franchises onto their deathbeds, & is partially to blame for poisoning the dedicated, hardcore console. Wii U is the last, true console, & it’s sad to see how the masses have abandoned the industry. Then again, purests have always been the minority. Hopefully, Wii U won’t suffer the same fate as Dreamcast & will get better marketing that can dispell the misnomers & misinformation. Nintendo certainly won’t go the same, sad route as Sega.

Anyway, PCs have always had more powerful innards. I mean, consoles are closed platforms that remain on shelves longer than a gpu gen, & multi-media boxes are basically bargain PCs, (which are also bargain CD, & DVD/Blu-ray players). The Wii U is a console, & in a different catagory. Call it a gimped PC or multi-media box compared to $ony & M$ if you must, but real gaming to me is by definition a niche. Sony & the mainstream started its ruin. I guess Sega, too, for including music CD functionality. But I’ve digressed (quite a bit).

Imo, the Tomb Raider franchise lost its magic w/ the 2nd installment. In terms of 3rd party support, the Wii U doesn’t need bloated multi-plats & tarnished franchises, it needs quality exclusives & fresh IPs (oh, & better marketing).

The game industry has certainly changed, though. Capcom, for example, supported the GameCube & Wii quite well, yet they’re in dire financial straits because of bloated budgets & the industry’s current, unsustainable trend that the PS3 & 360 helped usher in. However, if anyone can weather this apacolypse, it’s Nintendo. If need be, they’ll buy popular IPs, create new ones, & be the only company sustaing the console industry.

    2. They are not to blame at all. Nintendo has to take the lead in marketing and selling the system and gamers have to take the initiative to buy the system *and* the games. And not just certain franchises here and there. If first party games are the only games that will sell well on the system, even with other good second and third party games out there, third parties aren’t going to budge.

Without those two forces, third parties will still be reluctant to publish more games on it.

        1. They aren’t being “treated different.” This is how the industry works. The same thing is happening to PlayStation’s Vita.

If the manufacturer can’t sell the systems and games on the system, then third parties aren’t going to be very inclined to put much investment into it.

And you can bet, that if the PS4 and Xbox One’s software sales aren’t good (which they have been pretty good so far for a launch), then third parties will pull out too until they see improvements.

          1. Nintendo isn’t getting the same treatment otherwise 3rd parties would have no excuse to skip the console. Why should we get penalised? I actually want to play some great games on my console thank you very bloody much!!

          2. You’re correct: Nintendo isn’t being treated differently, in the general context of not seeing multi-plats (except during launch when it got old multi-plats, ports w/ little or no 8th gen polish, & gimped content).

But, they are being ignored in the sense that 3rd parties aren’t bringing exclusives, & ones that cater to the Wii U’s or Nintendo’s audience. They basically shoehorned what works for the twin’s audience. This wasn’t always the case. Even the N64 saw some good 3rd party support, w/ games not found elsewhere & fit w/ Nintendo’s philosophy. Ubisoft w/ Buck Bumble, which they then developed timely & polished ports of Batman Vengeance & the PoP trilogy. & Capcom solidly ported RE2. & even RE∅ was to be an N64 exclusive before it added to the GameCube’s library of exclusives, including REbirth.

I’ve owned every Ninty console except the NES. Yet, my gaming library for each has more 3rd party titles than 1st. Yes, my Wii library is larger, but its my GameCube’s that has the most solid 3rd Party titles. ‘Course, that was also when Sega, Namco, Capcom, & Ubisoft were bigger than they are today. Now the games are huge, but are collapsing w/ out a solid foundation. Most multi-plats are hollow anyway.

        2. It’s the Xbots corrupting everything around them so that they brainwash these idiots into negating our empire access to their lesser games as well as they do it on the Sonyans…

    3. It is not the 3rd party devs fault for Wii U’s bad sales. Have you noticed that Wii U owners DON’T CARE about 3rd party games? If it is anyone’s fault, it would be both Nintendo’s and Nintendo’s consumers faults that the Wii U is failing. Firstly, because Nintendo did an awful job at making a product that people want to buy and secondly, because many Nintendo fans still have not bought a Wii U. If you don’t own a Wii U then I don’t even think you get to voice your opinion about the struggling console, because clearly you aren’t even doing your job as a consumer.

      1. It is third party fault wiiu owners don’t care for their games. It dosnt matter how you paint it, it is their fault.

    4. 3rd party devs are not to blame. They were the only support the system had at launch. I bought my wiiu day 1 and all I bought was mario and zombieU along with my premium system. Nintendo put its baby in the bath and left it to fend for itself. They tried to show off games and then went oh but they won’t come out for more than a year after launch. I can say I haven’t touched my wiiu since about a month after its launch. No, I don’t have Windwaker or Pikmin. Sure I want them but, I don’t have them. 3rd parties stopped acting like they were going to support the system because Ninty abandoned it themselves. The holiday lineup that was suppose to save the system got pushed back until spring. Not to mention going for the family attraction of DK over the core appeal of a new Metroid. I love all my Nintendo systems but they aren’t helping the system enough. 3ds was a “failure” and now it is set to be the highest selling handheld of all time. They should have taken the same enthusiasm to save the drowning console.

    5. It’s not the responsibility of 3rd parties to make the Wii U sell. It’s up to Nintendo.

And the vast majority of people who are into this kind of game either already have the originals or have next-gen consoles to play the definitive versions. It’s not the kind of game that’d sell well enough on Wii U to make the extra money spent on development worth it, let alone make a profit.

        1. I am not being a fan boy, I am purely pointing out how wrong it is for Square to be doing this…..isn’t not on!

          1. You do realize square is making an exclusive for the system don’t you? Ever here of the working title X? You know Xeno Blade universe game?

            1. Ah, the days before developers had multi-plat fever & bloated budgets. A bygone era when 3rd party support meant exclusives or @ least games that suited a console’s audience. Still, Sega’s Dreamcast & just about every Nintendo console has gotten undue scorn. The majority of gamers no longer care about dedicated consoles or dedicated titles. Perhaps most never were niche to begin w/.

Anyway, don’t let the multi-plats fool you into thinking this is the same industry that it used to be. The 3rd party support I knew & loved is on its deathbed. In stark contrast, Nintendo’s puritanical stubborness may yet survive; if anything, Nintendo could expand into all game genres & be a console industry unto themselves. But, that shouldn’t stop someone from getting one, or both of the twins if multi-plats are desired.

  2. bought it like 4 days ago for 14 bucks with all the other tomb raiders, finished in 19 hours with 100%, great game but not amazing

    1. Yeah. I borrowed it from a friend and played earlier this year. It was a good game, but I think some people hyped it up to be something more than it really was.

I personally wouldn’t even put it in my top 10 games of the year.

      1. it’s just triple aaa blockbuster game nowadays, third person shooter, where all bad things happen to the protagonist, it plays amazing but it’s just more of the same, and the only reason it took me 19 hours to 100% was because of the stupido sidequest, where easily spend hours looking for mooshroms, and thing hanging out among the forest

      2. Woah woah woah, you bought 10 games this year? I can think of 5 that I bought or want.

        >Animal Crossing (no rating it’s AC it wins)
        >Pikmin3 (wanted)
        >Windwaker (Best Zelda is best)
        >The Last of Us (extremely over rated stealth game, like 4 zombie sequences)
        >GTA V (Story was fun, multiplayer sucked compared to 4, sold it in the first month)

Think I bought far cry this year, was fun as a stealth shooter. Damn that was six.

        1. Didn’t say I bought them all (in fact I started out that last comment with “I borrowed it from a friend”. But yeah, I have played over 10 games this year.

Some I bought, some were gifts, some I borrowed, others were given to me for review by different companies. lol

  3. ALSO LOOKING AT THAT PAGE; HOW IS FUCKING POSSIBLE THAT LOW RESULOTION PIXELATED PICTURE IS THE OFFICIAL SITE? im calling shaneaningans

    1. Maybe Google toning down the resolution for storage purposes?
But I wouldnt get worked up over leaks by retailers or publications, lets just wait for actual announcement, and then tear squeenix a new one.

  4. Square isn’t a big supporter of anyone. They are just trying to stay afloat since they don’t have as much money as they used to. If your console doesn’t sell. don’t expect a game on your console.

    1. It’s sad, how giants fall.

Once upon a time, Square Enix was one of my favorite publishers/devs in the industry. Then the last gen happened and they fell from grace.

      1. It is sad.
Square Soft and Enix joining forces was the stuff of dreams, but turned out to be a disaster -.-
They did make Bravely Default though, which is awesome.

      2. I think one thing thats hurting them are all these big budget games. I believe they over advertised for tomb raider then they should if I recall. Not sure about Deues EX. Square isn’t in the best of shape. Most gaming companies are suffering as tech advances

      3. Havent cared for Final Fantasy since FF X.
Cant even remember, when was the last time Squeenix published something must have.
Though I’m thinking of getting 3DS for Bravely Default.

      1. Not going to be any brighter on PS4 and Xbone.
Most people who have bought PS4 and xbone, probably upgraded from each individual last gen counterparts.
Those people, who cared for the game, have already played it.
Most likely only “definitive” here, is graphics update.
So I don’t think those who have played it, would double dip, and those who didn’t care to play it last gen, well there’s that hope that theres enough drought in software for people to pick this port up.

  5. I am honestly going to give up on 3rd party developers. Don’t do anything for Wii U then. I’d rather pay £40 for a first party title any day!

    1. Does it have anything special to it besides the upscale in graphics? look dlc content that makes it worth it

  6. What the Wii U thinks:

“I don’t get support because there are no sales because I don’t get support because there are no sales because I don’t get support because there are no sales because I don’t get support because there are no sales because I don’t get support because there are no sales because”

  7. Its not even that good anyway.
It’s pretty good, sure, but…not a disaster to miss it.

    Can’t believe it’s up for a fucking GOTY nomination…

    1. You don’t own a Wii U to support Nintendo so even if Tomb Raider came to the console you wouldn’t buy it. The system has been out a year and the price drop with bundles and you defending the Wii U seems sort of lame. You would be the reason why Smash bros 3DS would outsell the Wii U version.

  8. If its just a upscale port don’t really care. It was a good game just not something special to me. I do have to say this square needs to be smarter now because they are verge of collapse. I have a feeling this next gen will be a dark gen then any gen.

  9. Someone look on the Italian version of Amazon and look for it. I just did and cannot find it. If it really was coming out then why have the games been taken down already? Something fishy going on here.

  10. I would buy it for Wii U.
I have it on PC, not really something to get upset for.
But I dont see any reasoning for this.
It will not sell on PS4 or Xbone either. People going for those consoles have more probably already played it, and wont double dip for graphics.
If they did what they did with Deus Ex, it would actually make sense on Wii U.
Not saying it would sell great on Wii U.
It would sell as well as any other already played out port.

      1. Yes, there was no justification for that.
They should have made DC for other platforms as DLC, but that would have pretty much blown to their faces either way.
But I bought it for Wii U from eShop for 45€, and it has been pretty good.
Though I managed to lose all my saves on ext HD, so I had to start all over again, but if I can get through the game this time, I would have got my moneys worth.

    1. ur right because why would pple get a game they can get 4 ten dollars just to have “better graphics” sqare enix make a new game

  11. I think this should be Nintendo’s wake up call to get their asses into gear and start going to 3rd parties and asking them to port their games onto the Wii U, even if Nintendo themselves would be needed to help the process.

I mean for Christ Sake, Sony already Praised the Wii U for going with the PowerPC hardware because its more efficient

  12. a AAA third party game not coming to the wii u. In other words the bear shits in the woods ..

Wii U owners should expect to never get games like this. first of all third party games sell like shit on the Wii U. second this version runs on X86 it would cost time and money to develop onto the Wii U which runs on power PC architecture ( As seen in last gen ) , see my first example so whats the point ?

What third party games are coming to the Wii U after watchdogs ? Lol. Third party support on the Wii U is DEAD

  13. and another thing the damage control in this comment section is HILARIOUS

“no loss here, as a nintendo gamer i dont play hardcore games. now where is my kiddy game”
“Ah we dont need this game”
“ah i dont care, i would rather be playing lego city than GTA5” LOL

  14. Before I say anything, I’m a Nintendo fan, I bought the wii u and 3ds at launch. But I see no reason for this game to be ported to the Wii U. The Wii U is doing terrible in sales and marketing, yeah 3rd party has SOMEWHAT to do with it because the lack of games being developed/ported, but its mainly Nintendo, they did a terrible job marketing the Wii U, the main thing that they really advertise was the gamepad which many people got confused if it was a controller or a new system. People who say the Wii U ISNT underpowered, yeah they can make this game for the Wii U, the games probably optimised for the X1/PS4, but if ported to Wii U they have to spend time porting it for the Wii U and since the hardware is diffrent from
the X1/PS4, its going to take more time to have a port that actually can play well on that hardware, which I see no dev wanting to do since they can’t really make a profit

    1. @Cdxx
For this week, globally, the Wii U sold 111,046, a 44% increase from the global sales of last week 77,210. Wii U isn’t “doing terrible in sales” when compared to PS4, which had increased in sales by 8.8% after launch week. I expect PS4 sales to dwindle very largely until March (Infamous Second Son). Then again, Titanfall will also have the attention of A LOT of gamers, so PS4 doesn’t look in good shape as of now.

  15. NO WONDER SINCE WII U CANT HANDLE THOSE HD GRAPHICS. MAYBE IF THEY MADE IT CARTOONISH.

GLAD I BOUGHT TOMB RAIDER ON MY BIRTHDAY. ITS AN AWESOME GAME.

  16. Would like someone to riddle me this.
Why is Nintendo only console maker, that is expected to raise the user base with 1st party only?

    1. Because they don’t build hardware to cater to 3rd parties. They build hardware for their software, innovate, and 3rd parties are welcome to join the party, but they are not taken into consideration when the hardware is built.

      Notice how close PS4 and X1 specs are. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

      1. You’re right. Both Sony and Microsoft worked closely with their first party and some third party developers when developing their new systems. That *is* why they are so close in terms of hardware and specs.

Nintendo on the other hand, made a system and then after the fact said, “here’s our system! Work with it,” to the third parties. It’s not especially the best way to do things. Sony learned that the hard way last gen.

    1. If it was a good port and came out at the same time as the other consoles I would reward Square with a first day purchase. It’d do fairly decent I think. Not millions..but enough to turn Nintendo fans onto their games which would help in the future Sadly, these morons in this industry don’t get that you have to cultivate relationships with gamers. it takes time, but once you get them, you have sales for life. Too much easy cash grab going on with companies now

        1. Going to lock that answer?
Reson I would buy it for Wii U, would be to support,
and the fact that I stopped playing it on PC after midway.

But what reason would PS4 or Xbone owner have to buy a last gen port of a game that they have already played, or didn’t care enough about to play it?

        2. @ hero cup
PS4 offers NOTHING that is a must buy right now.

XOne has a few good-looking games.

Graphics don’t matter, gameplay does. Case-in-point: Battlefield 4 which is buggy as heck on PS3 but looks significantly than Call of Duty Ghosts. In fact, Ghosts plays better than Battlefield 4 (from experience).

Wii U also has more 60/1080 titles than both PS4 and Xbox One as of right now.

          1. Considering the Wii U has been out for a year, it would be very sad if it didn’t have more titles than the systems that have only been out for a few weeks.

  17. ERRYONE STOP BEING MAD WITH SQUARE THEY EVEN SAID AT FIRST “”””COMING TO NEXT GEN CONSOLES””””” I DUNNO WHO THOUGH ABOUT WII U LMAO

    1. I understand that fanboys and small and unprofessional publications has difficulties to grasp the meaning of word “generation”, but it is whole lot different for global corporation.

    1. Yes, I have the definitive version as well already.
I put playing it on hold, when there was a rumor of squeenix working on porting a last gen game for Wii U. Haven’t returned to it since.

  18. It’s not like it matters to the success of the console. If Tomb Raider was released on the Wii U does anyone honestly believe it would either “drive console sales” or even “be bought?”

Tomb Raider would tank on the Wii U. 3rd party games don’t mean shit for the console right now. We need killer 1st party games like Zelda to be released ASAP.

  19. REGGIE AT VGX: I HAVE BAD NEWS TOMB RAIDER WONT BE COMING TO WII U THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT ULL BE ABLE TO PLAY AS CRANKY KONG IN DK TROPICAL FREEZE.

    EVERYONE: MEH!

  20. the only thing that nintendo actually can do is get off their ass and release a killer game that showcases with the Nintendo Wii u can actually do or accomplish this is what needs to be done not another fucking Mario game not another cartoony art style game, a killer game that will fully at least 90 percent or 80 percent utilize what the machine can actually output, then people can say and look and say wow yeah if that machine can do that then I know definitely these games can run on that machine anot something sub HD

  21. Wouldnt have bought it anyway. Especially not at an inevitable premium price of 50 bucks, exclusively for us WiiU ownners :) ! (It’s still a bummer though…)

  22. So if everyone wants nintendo to scrap the u and come out with a ” true” next generation system to compete with ps4 and xbone here’s the issue as I see it. All of us hard core gamers own all the systems so the third parties would have to make their games for every platform Most of us won’t buy 3 or 4 versions of the same game. So what’s the big deal with nintendo not having the same or any of the 3rd party games as the other 3 ? We buy the 3rd party on PC,xbone or ps4 and nintendo games on nintendo works great for me.

  23. IF ITS NOT ON WIIU DERP THEN HOW CAN IT BE THE DEFINITIVE VERSION

    LTFOL DUALSHOCKS DEFINITIVE NOW

LOL JUST LOL WIIUS DEAD IS IT LAST TIME I CHECKED ITS USERVASE EAVES PS4 AND XBONE COMBINED FOR DEAD

    THE INTERET LOL THE INTERNET

WHATS DEFINETIVE ABOUT THEEXACT SAME CONSOLES AS THE ONES THEY REPLACED

DS1 DS 2 DS 3 DS 4 SIXAXIS LOL AT CASUAL SCUM THINKNITING THERE CORE

WIIU IS THE DEFINETIVE SYSTEM COMMON FUCKING SENSE

  24. TRUE NEXT GEN SYSTEM THATS WIU PS4 ISNT NEXT GEN ARE WE NOW IN THE FUCKING TWILIGHT ZONE

DUALSHOCK FROM PS1 IS LOL NEXT GEN BUT

GAMEPAD AND WII REMOTE LUS ARE NOT LOL ATDERANGED FANBOYS

tomb raidernot coming ha NOTHING TO DO WITH WIIU ITSVTHE DUMB FUCK INDUSTRY

  25. The only game of the year nominee game actually on the Wii U is made by Nintendo. If you want to play the games everyone is talking about, you have to buy one of the other two systems, Nintendo Wii U doesn’t have any of the game of the year nominees except Super Mario 3D World.

  26. back to the tomb raider game yeah you can also get this game on PC im sure. im not really understanding why people are trying to make it seem like ps4 and xbone are gana leave wiiU in the dust. if anything nintendo is about to make a comeback in march or april watch.

  27. instead of putting old games that have only been one or two years why not make a new game, anyway the old ports don’t look as good anyway and it only tomb raider.

  28. of course its nintendos fault, old hardware and bad advertising….why should someone invest money making a game which doesnt get sold.

  29. Well then fuck you, Square-Enix!
I guess they figured the Wii U has a lackluster third-party support and needs to stay that way.
And fuck you, Nintendo, for making yet another system no third-party wants to take seriously!! And an additional fuck you to the fanatics who encourage Nintendo to keep this crap up!!
Sorry for the fowl language, but this is really pissing me off!!
