Nintendo DS Virtual Console Coming To Wii U

Nintendo has announced that Nintendo DS software will be added to the future Virtual Console lineup for Wii U. Because the DS has a “very strong” library of games, Nintendo says it wants to make the dual-screen handheld’s titles playable on Wii U via the Wii U GamePad controller. The reveal was made during a corporate briefing today in Japan, where the firm also confirmed that Mario Kart 8 is scheduled to launch globally in May.

    1. Fuck yea, that’s some good news. I guess local wireless won’t work anymore. Only way that could happen is if they tricked it into thinking an online connection is a local wireless one which would probably require some coding. Definitely doable, but it wont happen.

        1. wow…im surprised at this news…its very awesome!
Though i’d much rather have GameCube VC on Wii U, but it seems DS will come first.

    1. HD rendered n64 and GameCube game would be so awesome, Mario sunshine, wario, paper Mario 1 and 2, Mario 64,
honestly id really like to see full HD remakes of the two n64 castelvania games. But if they came to VC that would be cool, and the DS games!!! Love me some castevania.

    1. i’m blown away … DS games coming? … surely they meant for the 3DS right? … i’m confused … i almost think the wires were crossed.

surely gamecube should be coming to WiiU instead right?

  1. This is freaking amazing! But…they better not take 2 years to release this and only have 5 games. I hope Nintendo pays more attention to their virtual console lineup.

    1. Ooh, I could do Phoenix Wright games…I’ve never started the series, sadly. It seems interesting.
I’ve only ever had one Elite Beat Agents game, and I LOVED IT. I’d buy one if I saw it on the Virtual Console.

  2. And not a single game anyone actually cared for was released. lol I really hope that to not be the case, but I’ll just have to wait and see when the games come.

  3. Good idea. I still dont understand why it takes so long to get N64 and GC games on the virual console.
EVen tho this will drive sales, I dont think it will drive sales of units sold.
Put a virtual console on iOS and Android and be done with it.

  5. This idea is great!!!! But how would online and local multiplayer modes work? I think this is a really great opportunity to have cross platform play between Wii U and DS.

    1. Not going to happen, it would be online between Wii systems only. Or not have online at all. How ever they may see graphic changes. What is nice is this well spell it out for developers why the second screen is important. Because all the DS games used it

  6. I’m kinda curious how they are gonna execute the part in Phantom Hourglass where you had to close the screen.

    1. Perhaps with the Wii U’s gyroscope, it will sense when you can flip it face down and that’s how it will register. Just a thought on how it could be down.

  7. Nintendo, before you start putting handheld games on the Wii U VC, maybe you should focus on making a VC for previous home consoles, like the GameCube or even Wii. Then put the GBA and DS games on 3DS VC…

  8. Cool idea, will really make good use of the gamepad. I wonder though how much the DS games will cost considering that old SNES games cost $7.99 on the Wii U.

  9. Why couldn’t they have just made a Wii U DS Player (like the Game Boy Advance player that plugged into the Gamecube)? I know…..MONEY!
But I suppose this is good news to those who don’t mind digital copies of games. For myself, the only cool part about this is possibly being able to record the DS game footage onto DVD’s for Playthroughs/Let’s Plays. Though only one screen would get recorded.

    1. Oh yeah, that would be cool. I got over 200 ds games that I would love to play on the big screen. I still have my gameboy player for the Gamecube. So cool.

  10. SM64DS 0_o

As long as they improve resolution/FPS.

I can dream, I don’t want giant laggy/pixely games on my TV, it will bring back bad memories of my PS1.

  11. They better release N64 and gamecube games before going to the DS. Have they even release any snes games? And to all the people saying that this should be for the 3DS, the 3DS can play DS games already so there really is no need unless you want a digital version of the game.

    1. Maybe they’ll start working their way backward starting with the DS, then the Gamecube, then te N64,etc,etc.

Obviously skipping Wii U because Wii Mode.

  12. hears my list of DS games I want on the WIIU VC:
Sonic Classic Collection, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Pokémon Conquest, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, Namco Museum, Pokémon Diamond, Sonic Colors, Final Fantasy III, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Fossil Fighters, Assassins Creed 2 Discovery, Assassin’s Creed Altair’s Chronicles, Call of Duty: World at War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Brothers in Arms: War Stories, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Fossil Fighters: Champions, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Backyard Football 2009, The Sims 3, Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution, Power Rangers Samurai, Power Rangers Super Legends, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, Digimon World DS, Digimon World: Dawn, Madden NFL 09, Major League Baseball 2K12, Percy Jackson – The Lightning Thief, Madden NFL 2005, Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff, Madden NFL 07, Chaotic: Shadow Warriors, Madden NFL 08, FIFA Soccer 11, Samantha Swift and the Hidden Roses of Athena, Sports Collection, Major League Baseball 2K11, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, Backyard Sports Football: Rookie Rush, Real Soccer 2009, Big League Sports: Summer Sports,

  13. Will I have to buy my DS games again?
Why more old, old stuff? Is the console too weak to play GC and 64 games? If they released a DS played and a 3DS player for WiiU

  14. Will this include the Pokemon games(Diamond and Pearl)and Zelda games!? I never got to play Phantom Hour Glass

I also never got to play metroid Prime Hunters. I hope they put that game on the VC as well.

  15. Why not DS Virtual Console for the 3DS and Nintedo 64 and GAMECUBE Virtual Console for the Wii U? Or a Wii Virtual Console for the Wii U?

  16. I must say, this is pretty out of left field- I never anticipated this. Still, I’m intrigued by the idea. I’d definitely use it to download some old DS games that were stolen from me years back, like Metroid Prime Hunters and Yoshi’s Island DS.

  17. DS Virtual Console? Very left-field, but very welcomed.

Yes, we know the 3DS is natively backwards compatible with DS software, but I’d be down playing certain DS games on the Wii U. Makes me wonder if and when we’ll get GameCube games on the Wii U Virtual Console, also, what about GBA games?

    Still, I’m down with that,

  18. I’m dumbfounded.

A console that recent? Heck yeah!

    Thoughts:

The fact that the NDS has two screens means that either the TV would emulate the top screen and the gamepad the bottom, or that it would be on the entire screen on both devices with a vertical letter box.

Suspended mode could be emulated with a button outside of the game display (even with the top screen = TV bottom screen = Gamepad config, there would still be a vertical letterbox, as the gamepad’s widescreen but the touch screen isn’t. Even the 3DS’s touch screen has it.)

Internet could work, even though Wi Fi works differently on the NDS, since Nintendo could run an emulated Wi Fi port to trick the NDS to run on Wi Fi standards introduced after the NDS was made.

Wi Fi multiplayer (not to be confused for internet play)? Nintendo can run servers that would trick the NDS software into thinking it’s near another NDS so that it can play NDS games (kinda like Virtual Local Area Network, or Virtual LAN for short).

That, or the Wii U would communicate with a real NDS so that both the Wii U owner and the person with the NDS/DSi/3DS would be able to play together. (the side effect is that the internet’s disabled for the duration of the multiplayer).
