Super Smash Bros. Melee Returns For EVO 2014

After the controversy at EVO 2013, Nintendo has provided the go-ahead for Super Smash Bros. Melee to return at this year’s EVO. The line-up was announced last month and will include six other games; Ultra Street Fighter 4, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma, King of Fighters 13 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Last year’s EVO tournament encountered live-streaming issues with Nintendo, plus there was controversial talk concerning Super Smash Bros. Melee as “dangerous” brand from a marketing perspective. But with Nintendo approving the game for EVO 2014, it’s hoped that the tournament will run smoothly without any live-streaming hiccups. The Las Vegas Hotel and Casino will host this year’s EVO between July 11 – 13.

“The fact that Super Smash Bros. Melee is being used to help determine champion status for competitive gamers so many years after it was released is a testament to the strong fan passion for both this individual game and the Super Smash Bros. franchise overall,” a representative for Nintendo told Polygon. “Nintendo is happy to work with both Evo and Major League Gaming to help make their tournaments come to life using the game, and we hope it helps make their events enjoyable for video game fans everywhere. Nintendo will be releasing a new Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS this year.”

  1. I’m curious may i ask why melee? Why not smash brothers brawl? It’s odd playing a game this old? It would be like if they had a game competition before Mario kart Wii was released and instead of playing Mario kart double dash they played Mario kart 64. Why do this?

    1. Melee is much much more technical than brawl or the first smash brothers.

Believe it or not brawl is so different to the point where (IMO)most of the fans of SSB like Melee better.

      watch some videos on YouTube
It gets real competitive really fast.

    2. Trust me, Brawl would not work. It’s fun, but more of a family game. Melee is the single greatest competitive game ever. Even more so than Street Fighter and Tekken

      1. Good point I remember great times with melee. I loved playing as Mewtwo I hope he returns in Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS.

        1. I agree that Mewtwo would be awesome! Many people did not like his move set, but it was very unique. He could definitely be a real threat if they updated his recovery speed after big hits. He was also the first to have the Shadow Ball and that’s an awesome attack. I still love to play on Melee once in a while and then go back to Brawl. Now I’ll have 4 Smash Games to alternate with!

      2. >Most competitive game ever

        That’s bullshit, but whatever.

Brawl’s status as a family game isn’t why it’s not being played, it’s not being played because Brawl is a terrible, terrible competitive game. Tripping and Meta Knight kill anything that could have been salvageable in this game.

    3. Well some people did not like the direction they went with brawl.

tripping, slow movements, and unnecessary changes to character’s gamestyles.

  2. I’m happy that Smash Bros. will be returning, and without controversy this time, but no Skullgirls in the lineup?

    1. No Persona either
But hey, Blazblue made it so I’m happy. I’ll just watch BB and Street Fighter, and maybe a bit of King of Fighters.

  3. Haters gonna hate, and a lot of peoplz will whine about how melee is not even a fighting game LOL @allofthem

          1. There probably wouldn’t be a point, but they could still do it. And there’s no rule in Nintendo’s world that says that their characters can’t be resized, they resized Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Kirby.

            1. You’re technically right in that, by default, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to up(Olimar)/down(Bowser)scale a given character, but in the case of Ridley, I don’t think he’d WORK as a scaled down character. From the way I view the character, everything intimidating and formidable about him is connected in some way to his size (e.g. grabbing Samus and grinding her against a wall, or holding her in his palm while he charges a beam in his mouth). It can be compared to scaling Kraid down to size. He’d simply be a fat, ugly, human-sized lizard.

              1. This post all the way. I just cannot understand why people want him in the game so unbelievably bad, and no matter what, every thing I can think of about him regards to his size. There’s no way a huge boss is converting to a playable character.

But in saying that, Waluigi got the assist part… Lol

  4. Nintendo should add super smash bros melee to the wii u’s virtual console (or even an HD remake like wind waker HD) and promote more tournaments. I think it could push more units and keep competitive players happy

  5. Las Vegas sucks, the hype its made out to be is nowhere near there. I guess I can attend the EVO though since it’s only a few miles away.

  6. is very nice and game the zelda number 1
Para mi el mejor juego de la historia y que se me enriza la piel zelda
saludos a todos los fans de nintendo

  7. You guys left out the important part where Melee is also going to be at MLG Anaheim and being directly supported by Nintendo.

  8. Melee is the only reason I still bother to watch EVO most of the other matches seem to only be juggle juggle juggle juggle then KO.

Hope mango and M2K make it.
