NPD: Wii U Sales Were Up More Than 85% in May In US Compared To Previous May

It has been revealed that Wii U hardware sales were up more than 85% this May compared with May 2013. The increase was due to Mario Kart 8 which was the second best-selling video game in the United States during the month.

Update: It should be noted that Wii U only managed to sell 60,130 units.

Thanks, Timmy

  1. well when Zelda and the X JRPG game come out that’s when I will buy the Wii U I’m sure the sales will go up as well.

      1. Well if he doesn’t like any of the games out right now, he doesn’t have to..

I bought the Wii U day 1 with NintendoLand, but that was my decision. I wasn’t forced.

    1. nope.
because zelda never sold a lot of games and x have there fanbase but it will never sales a lot.
when you look at the vga chartz, you will see that american market is the importent, and after that comes europe. the japanesse market is just peanuts (not handheld).
so the americans and european play other games. nintendo brings only smash and mk, that the u will push a little.

      1. You might be right. But who is to say all of the fanbase of Zelda owns a Wii U? If they don’t & there are still a couple million fans out there without a Wii U, I guarantee that Zelda for Wii U will help sell consoles when it nears release. Not to mention Monolith Soft, the creators of Xenoblade Chronicles X, has at least a few million fans that will know this game will be worth a purchase of a console.

  2. I’ll say it again…

Well looks like the big N was saved from MK8, good show Nintendo…specially with one game compared to 5 other versions of one other game. Just goes to show you that you can damage control all you want, it don’t mean shit when it clobbers the competition…

      1. Mario kart 8 was only out 2 days in the month of May, I’m sure a lot of those were just in those 2 days, we’ll wait til June

      1. That’ s with only 2 days in may and we still don’t have any sales update but Reggie hinted that the sales quadruple the week after mario kart 8 was released and last time I checked mario kart 8 sold 187,000 wii u around the world as of may 31st so 4 times the amount makes it nearly 750,000 wii u. If that is really true ima flip out.

  3. How does Mary party franchises sales Nintendo consoles? No one hardly talked about Marty Party 10 for Wii U. I like it.

  4. Yeah, rather good news but the sales are still very low, especially in this nerd country. ‘Murrica going for the graphics, even if it has no game to offer.

      1. Yes, they are still fun today….
Kind of ironic seeing how games like Minecraft sold amazingly on PC yet it’s graphics are awful…. so pretty much, graphics only mean a quarter of the game. Crysis 3 is an example, amazing graphics but horrible gameplay and mediocre story…

          1. Yeah because those probably had good gameplay & a good story. What? Do you think Crysis 3’s shitty gameplay & story should get a free pass because the previous games were great all around?

              1. Why? Even if I did, you’d act like a immature kid/adult, like you are now, & just say another cuss word since it seems to make you feel so mature using them, anyway. And if it has a story in it with cutscenes throughout of main characters interacting to progress the story, then it is obviously about a story. It might not be the focal point but it’s still a story.

    1. graphics are important and sales show that, and there;s nothing to be ashamed of. more power = easier for developers to develop / bigger worlds / more beautiful graphics / etc.
if graphics were not important why would nintendo even upgrade from wii to wii u.

  5. 60K is still an impressive feat, it may not be to your PS4 sales standards but the more Wii U owners the better.

Graphics isn’t everything, specially when you can finish the whole game in 20 mins. and still pay full price.

    1. If you look on VGchartz my brother, you’ll see that the PS4 and Wii U are neck and neck whilst the Xbox One is sadly falling behind.

  6. Well the Wii U will slowly climb the mountain. Just got to keep pumping more games out. Will it sell well compared to other systems? Probably not. But hopefully enough to increase the install base to where the third party will come back.

  7. love how blind people are. 85% from a number 1 seller for a dying console is NOTHING. it didnt save it, more games wont save it too. nintendo had very conservative numbers that they will sell only 2-3 million consoles this year. Those numbers are going to be very correct

    2. >.< More games won't save it? If the console gets a steady stream of games, it will be saved. Don't be naive to think it won't.

  8. May would not show the results from MK 8. We will have to wait for the june numbers. If what Reggie said is correct, then june should have 4 times as many sales, maybe around 250,000. Nintendo knows one game cannot save a system. It’s a constant stream of great games that makes a system. Software sells hardware.. Nintendo will prevail victorious in the long run.

  9. Sigh…i hate the negativity! If i made something and i sold 60,000 of them in one month id be more then happy!
Can someone tell me…does nintendo make a profit on their sales? surely thats all that matters? i know the other two dont ;)

    1. Yes Nintendo is making profit on every Wii U sold specially when they announced they already broke even from production costs. Now the company is in production to fill the demand.

60,000 is a big deal, they just don’t want to believe Mario Kart sold more consoles in 2 days of its release.

  10. For those Sony’s fans here the reality that many in the game industry do not want to tell:

Unit sales of the PlayStation 3 dropped faster than expected, but this was balanced by increased sales of PS3 software.

In total, 14.6 million Sony consoles – PS2, PS3 and PS4 – were sold in the financial year, along with 4.1 million handhelds. Sell-through of 7 million PS4s was announced in mid-April 2014. A ¥8.1 billion ($78 million) operating loss, against a narrow positive income of ¥1.7 billion in the prior year, was related to the cost of launching the PS4.

Please note that 7M units were sold worldwide, 7M units is more than Nintendo at this time but Now I am sure they are equal or near each others. Sony like MS and Nintendo have the same issue consumers do not see the need to get the latest console. So for those 3rd Part developer who don’t want to release game on Wii U but on PS4 and XB1 don’t use the hardware sales cause it’s BS……..
