According to VGCharts Nintendo’s reasonably controversial Metroid: Other M has finally sold over a million units. The game originally launched seventeen months ago to fairly mixed reviews from the gaming press. Clearly the number of retail outlets offering the Other M at sale price during the Christmas season helped boost sales of the game.

GameStop is selling the entertaining Metroid: Other M for a mere $6.99. It appears as though the price is just online, so you won’t be able to pick it up for that price if you pop down to your local store. I’d highly recommend purchasing it.

Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi has told G4TV that the widely criticized story behind Metroid: Other M was completely down to Nintendo’s Yoshio Sakamoto rather than Team Ninja themselves.

“We definitely worked with them on the project, but that was all him,”

“There are definitely things we learned from Other M by working with Mr. Sakamoto and with Nintendo.”

The unexpected collaboration between Team Ninja and Nintendo is most definitely a success.

Many gamers out there were shocked when Nintendo announced that they were co-developing the next edition of the highly revered Metroid franchise with Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden developer, Team Ninja.

Thankfully I can say the fruits of both teams labour have paid off with an action packed adrenaline fueled rush that at times can feel relentless but always keeps the player entertained and effectively glued to the screen.

The controls at first feel rather strange as the game requires only the Wii remote without the nunchuck accessory. When in third person mode you use the Wii remote as if it was a NES pad you then point the Wii remote at your screen to enter first person mode. As I said it initially feels strange but you’ll soon become accustomed to the controls.

Graphically the game is one of the finest looking titles I’ve encountered on the Nintendo Wii only challenged by the sublime Super Mario Galaxy 2. The game feels exceptionally polished and it’s readily apparent that Team Ninja have seriously packed some punches when it comes to pushing the graphical capabilities of the Wii.

This is definitely a Metroid game at heart that successfully manages to fuse together elements of the Metroid Prime series and Super Metroid to create something that doesn’t feel tacked together but something elegant in its own right. I honestly can’t wait to see what both teams can deliver next.

Metroid: Other M

Team Ninja’s hard work has paid off on Metroid: Other M with Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto stating that he couldn’t imagine a sequel to Other M being made without another collaboration with the Japanese development studio.

“As far as my opinion is concerned if we are going to make something similar to Metroid Other M in the future I cannot think that it would be possible for Nintendo to make it without collaborating with Team Ninja. After all they are that good a partner to us and we are pretty valuable to them as well.”

Nintendo’s recently released Metroid: Other M for the Nintendo Wii has failed to set the UK all-formats sales charts on fire with the well received action packed title making its début at number twelve.

With a large advertisement campaign running on British television to promote the title it seems a little bewildering as to why the title hasn’t charted higher, especially since its one of the best Wii releases this year.

Nintendo decidedly conquered E3 during today’s highly anticipated press conference, with the Japanese games company showing off a plethora of top class software and some extremely innovative hardware.

Yoshio Sakamoto, creator of the Metroid franchise has told online gaming publication Gamestutra that he’s extremely pleased with the work that Team Ninja have done in collaboration with Retro Studios on Metroid: Other M.

“I’d have to say that, if you wanted to maintain some sort of unilateral, top-down control over every aspect of the project, that’s probably easier to do in the long run, but that’s not something that I’ve ever wanted.”

He added: “I don’t feel like that’s something that yields the best results.”

“The best way to accomplish that, to find that sort of firmament that you can then put different arranged elements into, is to find the things that you can’t budge on – find the things that are essential, important, and you don’t want to change,” Sakamoto continued.

“Once you’ve got that established, you can bring in all sorts of talented people and let them collaborate and contribute to what you have there.”
Sakamoto had kind words for the Metroid: Other M’s director, Yosuke Hayashi, who works for Tecmo’s Team Ninja and who first came into the public eye due to his work on Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Said Sakamoto, “When we first brought him on, I didn’t just hand him a pile of documents and say, ‘Here you go. Please make this game.’”

“Rather, we talked about what was essential and what was good in the Metroid series and tried to figure out how best to use his arts background and know-how to really push those goals forward.”

He concluded: “One thing that I really appreciate about him is he can really say some unexpected things every once in awhile that seem to come out of left field, but, since I know that we have the same end-goal in mind, even if we occasionally disagree or are surprised by each other’s means or routes of getting there, we know we’re going to end up in a good place. It’s the right kind of conflict, and our individuality comes out in the best way possible.”

Nintendo of America have today confirmed that Metroid: Other M and Sin & Punishment 2 have been officially delayed.

Metroid: Other M is now scheduled for release August 31st, instead of the rumoured ‘to be determined’ date, whilst Sin & Punishment 2 also comes away relatively unscathed with the release date slipping from the 6th June to June 27th.
