Nintendo Wii: Miyamoto Says Nintendo May Charge For Improved Online Services

Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has recently had the opportunity to sit down with revered gaming publication Edge to discuss the possible future of Nintendo online services.

In the intriguing interview Shigeru Miyamoto states that Nintendo haven’t quite decided whether or not gamers should be provided with a free online gaming service similar to Wii, or whether the company should introduce a paid subscription based online model like Microsoft’s Xbox Live.

“… Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure,” Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development boss told us. “Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be.”

Nintendo: Nintendo Shuts Down 7,000 Player Pokémon Online Game

Nintendo have issued a cease and desist letter to the developers behind the popular Pokémon online mulitplayer game, Pokénet.

The Pokémon MMO game was work in progress, but that didn’t stop 7,000 players logging in just before the  project developers received their cease and desist letter from Nintendo.

‘Pokenet’ players were able to catch, evolve and finally trade Pokémon across two in game regions called Kanto and Johto, with more expected to arrive at a later date. Completely free to play the developers were losing money on hosting the servers – never the less Nintendo clearly saw this as a threat to their IP and crushed it quicker than Pikachu hopes of freedom.

Nintendo Wii: Miyamoto Is Open To Online Super Mario Bros.

Whilst many Nintendo gamers were initially disappointed to hear that that the well received Super Mario Bros Wii didn’t include an online multiplayer mode, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto hasn’t ruled it out for future titles.

“Well, it’s not for purely technological issues that it wasn’t included. After all, as you know, we already have online play in Smash Bros., and technologically speaking, I don’t think it’s creating a high amount of lag. It’s just a matter of our priorities when it comes to the creation of a game. We just prioritised on making a multiplayer mode where four players can sit together and play while seeing each other’s faces.

“We thought that this was more important as far as this New Super Mario Bros. was concerned, but we don’t know about the future. Because network environments are getting better and better every day, it may be possible in a future edition to incorporate that type of multiplayer online mode for a real-time action game. But I am just talking about the technological aspect here. What’s more important, of course, is if it’s going to add to the fun aspect of the game.”

Nintendo Wii: Animal Crossing Online Info Revealed

Speaking to revered gaming publication Edge, Animal Crossing creator Katsuya Eguchi discussed at length how players will revel in the online aspects of the game.

You’ll also be able to do more than ever together when you play online. You’ll be able to experience events or see concerts together, for example. And while in the DS version we discarded a lot of events that were popular in the GameCube version, we’re bringing them back. We’re including Halloween, we’re bringing back Jingle, the reindeer that visits during the holiday event, and we’ve got some new events, too. For example, during spring we’ve got a special visitor who brings paint and eggs so you can have an egg hunt, and we also have a carnival that’ll introduces another new character to the Animal Crossing world.

Nintendo Wii: Iwata Claims Nintendo Online Isnt Perfect

Speaking rather openly to online gaming publication Gamedaily, Nintendo boss Saturo Iwata freely admitted that the Wii’s online functionality isn’t providing consumers with the optimum experience.

“First of all, I don’t think the current system we have with friend codes is perfect. However, if it’s an online world where you can get access to anybody without any restrictions, I as a father do not feel like allowing my daughter be engaged in that kind of world. “So for Nintendo, especially in terms of the people who have never experienced online video games before, we think that it’s still very important to create a world where we can assure that there will be no harassment for these online beginners, and we really want to assure the security and safety for them to do that.

“So we will be studying this on an ongoing basis in order to improve Nintendo’s own circumstances where people can freely and safely enjoy the communications through the net.”
