Kid Icarus Uprising failed to make the top ten, but it would have been among the top-selling individual SKU’s for the month of March. Nintendo of America has yet to announce hardware sales for the month of March.

Wii Has Nearly Twice As Many 5-Million Sellers As Other Competing Consoles Combined (NPD Sales Figures)

Nintendo has issued a press release which states that Super Mario Galaxy became the ninth Wii game to sell more than 5 million units in the United States, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. The Wii system, which crossed 39 million units sold in February, now has nearly twice as many 5-million sellers as competing current-generation consoles combined.

“Wii continues its record-breaking run by surpassing 39 million units in its 64th month, a pace that is unmatched by any other system in U.S. history.Titles like Super Mario Galaxy help explain why Wii continues to resonate with consumers. The fact that one of the best-reviewed games of all time is available for a suggested retail price of $19.99  speaks to Nintendo’s combination of quality, family fun and value that is unmatched in our industry.”

- Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

  • Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS  each sold more than 100,000 units, bringing the life-to-date totals to more than 1.85 million and 1.45 million respectively.
  • Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version for Nintendo DS  have now sold more than 4 million combined units in the United States.
  • Nintendo sold 625,000 total hardware units in February and saw double-digit growth across each of its product lines compared to January. This includes:
    • Nintendo 3DS: 262,000, a 53 percent increase
    • Wii: 228,000, a 50 percent increase
    • Nintendo DS: 135,000, a 76 percent increase
    • Total: 625,000, a 57 percent increase

Metroid Other M Finally Sells Over One Million

According to VGCharts Nintendo’s reasonably controversial Metroid: Other M has finally sold over a million units. The game originally launched seventeen months ago to fairly mixed reviews from the gaming press. Clearly the number of retail outlets offering the Other M at sale price during the Christmas season helped boost sales of the game.

Nintendo 3DS Sells More In Its First Nine Months Than The Wii Did

Nintendo of America has announced via a press release that the Nintendo 3DS has sold more units in its first nine months that the Wii did. Nintendo of America also revealed that the system has finally crossed the four million sold mark which I reported on a few weeks back for Japan. Nintendo are obviously ecstatic that they’ve achieved the figure, and rightly so.

“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising.”

Nintendo Wii: The Wii At $99 Would “Explode” At Retail Say EA

EA CEO John Riccitiello believes that the Nintendo Wii would “explode” at retail if the price point was reduced to $99.

“I would say they did exceptionally well in ’07 and ’08, started tapering in ’09 and ’10, and… I think if they were to price down to $99, they would explode.

“I think they’ve now got competition, in the form of gesture-based gaming from Sony and Microsoft. If they were to find ways to promote third party content better, as opposed to first party content, and would hit pricing, I think the platform would see new life.”
