Nintendo: Nintendo President Says Nintendo Will Try And Create ‘Mature’ Games

I’m sure you’ve all heard before that Nintendo titles are aimed towards a younger demographic, and that they simply aren’t for people over the age of eighteen. It’s certainly not true, but unfortunately it’s just the way some ignorant gamers think. But will Nintendo ever create franchise which are clearly aimed towards the older player? Nintendo president Satoru Iwata certainly hopes so.

There are two aspects of the suggestion ‘there should be software which adults can enjoy further’ that I would like to touch on,” he began. “One is that even though such software titles already exist, we have failed to make them widely known.

“And second,” he continued, “because games were originally entertainment mainly enjoyed by children or young men, even though we have been working hard to expand the age range and offer entertainment which can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, we still have more work to do.”

“If I understand your request correctly, you want Nintendo to develop games which fulfil people’s intellectual curiosity by combining culture and entertainment in a clever way, so I would like to consider it as a future challenge for us.”

Nintendo: Nintendo President Says The Thought Of A First Person Shooter Future Makes Him Very Sad

Satoru Iwata clearly isn’t a great fan of the first person shooters that are dominating sales here in the Europe and in the United States. Just the thought of these games continuing to shift ridiculous numbers makes him cry a little inside. They don’t tend to sell well at all in Eastern markets, but the West always laps them up. Here’s what he had to say about them:

“It is a reality that some of these [wartime shooting] games sell 10 million units per year in [the West], and this is one valid type of video game genre. I would personally feel sad if all video games became something like that, but on the other hand, I do not think such games should disappear.”

Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo President Admits 3DS Launch Software ‘Wasn’t Strong’ Enough

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted to investors that the launch lineup for the Nintendo 3DS wasn’t strong enough to drive hardware sales. This has resulted in Nintendo thinking much more carefully about launch software when it launches Wii U next year. What was your opinion of the 3DS launch lineup, could it have been better?

“We also must reflect on the fact that we were not able to launch Nintendo 3DS at a time when a sufficient number of strong software titles were ready.”

“In order to avoid the same thing from happening to the Wii U, we are considering details, such as what software is suitable for the launch, more carefully than ever before.”

Nintendo Wii: Nintendo President Discusses Weak Wii Performance

Satoru Iwata has spoken to Mercury News about the Wii’s disappointing performance this year and to discuss the company’s forthcoming Wii U console. Iwata admitted that “no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity” but Nintendo are hopeful that Wii sales will pick up during the holiday season when we will be seeing Zelda: Skyward Sword and Kirby.

“Well, of course, no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity. And when it comes to Wii, we have to understand that any potential sales are going to be affected by the seasonalities much more than before.”

“If we cannot sell as well as we expect to during the holiday sales season, it’s going to be a grave concern for us. But right now, I think it’s premature to say, in terms of the current sales, what the one-year sales (result) will be like.”

“It’s nothing new. Last year and two years before, many people were very much concerned about the future of the Wii around this time of the year. However, the fact of the matter is that it ended up being the top-selling home console hardware of the year two years in a row, each year exceeding the previous record. That’s simply because the Wii was able to enjoy great sales during the holiday season.”

Nintendo: Nintendo President Says His Comments On Mobile Gaming Were Misinterpreted By Media

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes his comments at this years GDC conference were misinterpreted by the media.

Satoru Iwata told the audience at his GDC Keynote which was titled “Video Games Turn 25: A Historical Perspective and Vision for the Future” that he believed that cheap and disposable mobile gaming is going to destroy the industry. However according to Iwata his words were misinterpreted by news publications.

First of all, regarding my presentation at GDC, we have posted my entire keynote speech on our websites, but I am very disappointed with one thing.”

“Many reports said that I talked about a conflict between the quantity and the quality of video games, which made me think that reporters should have at least written an article after reading through the full text of presentation since we have posted the Japanese translations of the entire keynote speech. I have never mentioned the conflict between quantity and quality at all. Some articles based on this misperception even said, ‘Nintendo hard hit by video games for smartphones and social games, and criticized them as low quality’ but, again, I have never said such a thing at all.”

“The only message that I had hoped to convey at GDC was , since my keynote speech was dedicated to the game developers, that, without carefully trying to preserve the value of the games we develop, the digital distribution revolution could very easily depreciate their value, which might make all of us have a hard time.”

“Naturally there are both high-quality games and low-quality games in the traditional video game business that we have long engaged in. It is obvious that some games are fun and others are boring. As there is no accunting for tastes, I cannot say that all of the games Nintendo has released are definitely considered to be high-quality to everyone, and nor did I intend to refer to the quality of games by other developres. At the same time, however, I am reflecting on how I made my presentation, which was eventually summarized by some as if I had argued a conflict between quantity and quality.”

“What I wanted to argue most was that video game developers need to be careful about ‘preserving the value of video games’ so that the video game industry, regarded as valuable by many people, can be sustainable. This is the message I was eager to deliver. Since GDC is just a place for developers who create games, I dared to do that there even though there was a chance that some people might have a misunderstanding.”

“I sincerely hope that you will read my presentation on the website again and understand that it is a story about how to preserve the value of video games, not about a conflict between quantity and quality of video games.”

Nintendo Wii: Nintendo Hasn’t Given Up On Wii Says Nintendo President

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has reiterated that Nintendo haven’t given up on the Wii and that the company still has a few surprises in store for consumers.

Despite the lack of quality first party titles announced for Wii Satoru Iwata has promised that there’s more unannounced games on the horizon for the Nintendo Wii which will presumably be shown off at this years E3 event in June.

“We have not released any new Nintendo software titles for Wii, except for The Last Story (Japanese Title) in January, partly because we have focused on the launch of Nintendo 3DS since the beginning of this year,” Iwata said during an earnings briefing yesterday.

“Therefore, some in Japan seem to have the misunderstanding that Nintendo has given up making efforts on Wii. We are actually ready to release new Wii software titles every month from May to the end of this year.”

“Other new titles currently unannounced will be ready to be launched within this year,” he said. “Before the launch of the Wii successor, we will be aiming at creating other excitement for Wii in Japan, which has a large installed base of Wii hardware.”

Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo President Says The Nintendo 3DS Isn’t Selling As Well As Expected

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has informed analysts and investors that its recently released Nintendo 3DS hasn’t sold as well as the company had initially expected.

Satoru Iwata has blamed less than stellar sales for the Nintendo 3DS on the public not understanding the value of the 3DS or how to use the consoles inbuilt applications.

“Nintendo 3DS was launched in late March. The sales were high in the initial week, but sales fell below our expectations after the second week. Nintendo 3DS has not been selling as expected since the second week, and this is not just in the Japanese market but also in the United States and Europe, where no direct impact from the great earthquake has occurred.”

“Therefore, we recognize that we are in a situation where we need to step up our efforts to further promote the spread of Nintendo 3DS.”

“The value of 3D images without the need for special glasses is hard to be understood through the existing media. However, we have found that people cannot feel it just by trying out a device, rather, some might even misestimate it when experiencing the images in an improper fashion,” he said.

“People need to be taught to adjust the slider to suit them. We need to enhance the contents which can be enjoyed passively by non-active users, like a 3D video distribution service. We will promptly work on this after the currently planned hardware update.”

“Also, people aren’t properly clued up on all of the console’s features, such as StreetPass, SpotPass, Augmented Reality and Mii Maker. This needs fixing.”

“It is now clear that the combination of these new features is not necessarily easy-to-understand by just saying one word to those without experience,” said Iwata. “We have found that not all Nintendo 3DS users enjoy this software. There seems to be more than a few consumers who have Nintendo 3DS hardware but don’t know about this software and possibly haven’t had a chance to get interested in it.”
