Gaming publication Destructoid has revealed that there will be seven Chaos Emeralds for gamers to collect in Sega’s highly anticipated Sonic 4: Episode One.

Also of note is the return of the much-loved Super Sonic in his full lightening yellow glory. The retro themed 2D platformer is currently scheduled to hit the Nintendo Wii sometime during the Summer.

Sega have disclosed that one of the original level designers from Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles is heading the Sonic 4 design team alongside the respected developers behind the hand-held Sonic games, Dimps.

Yes, Dimps is working on the game. But there’s actually more to it than just that: at the same time, we also have members of Sonic Team, including the original senior level designer from Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the SEGA Genesis working alongside them. It is most definitely a partnership, and the result of this teamwork is something many of us are excited for.

Sega have officially announced that its highly anticipated Project Needlemouse is in fact Sonic 4 – Episode 1.

The company announced that the new 2D Sonic title will be available for download via WiiWare during the summer and will also be available for download on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
