  1. Yup, I’m afraid you certainly do. It’s priced here in England for the rather fair sum of £15. In my eyes an essential purchase :)

  2. I subscribe to Game Informer and in the most recent issue they said you could play NES games using only the wii remote sideways. Not sure if its accurate but it at least is hopeful.

  3. Cool, I’ve got to say that’s news to me.
I’ve just been ploughing my way through the recent Wii supplement in the latest edition of Edge and didn’t come across any mention of that.
Either way if it’s is true it will save eager gamers who wish to immerse themselves in NES titles a few notes :) Thanks for the info.

  4. I really hope gamecube controllers can be used for these games, it has all the buttons i think. But Nintendo will probably want to get as much money as they can so fair enough.

  5. As far as I’m aware you will need to purchase the Wii Classic Controller. Due to it incorporating a multitude of features from the variety of Nintendo control pads into one controller.

  6. Are you absolutely sure you’d need a classic controller? Alot those games have controls, especially the NES games, that can easily be accomedated by holding the Wii remote sideways.

Have you seen the list of initial VC games in Japan? Looks alot more appealing, and has more games. I wish they’d take a chance and translate the games that were Japan only, such as Fire Emblem.

  7. Yup, it’s only the NES titles that can be accommodated by holding the Wii remote sideways. Other titles would definitely need the Classic Controller for play.

  8. not a bad list there…..but wheres MARIO KART!!!! nevermind, seems an odd choice but cant wait to get into old dr robotniks mean bean machine!!!!!

  9. Yup, SNES Mario Kart is a glaring omission from this initial list of VC games. Mean Bean Machine is retro puzzling goodness at its finest! ;)

‘Blacker’ you will be pleased to know that Nintendo intends to provide some of the older VC titles with a cosmetic upgrade. Whether this goes beyond the graphics and onto the control mechanism remains to be seen.

  10. They haven’t actually revealed anything thus far, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few minor graphical overhauls here and there. Who knows ;)

  11. Question: You “NEED” the classic controller to play these games right?

    – Ok, it’s come to my attention via CVG that Virtual Console games CAN be played via a Gamecube Controller. Here’s what Nintendo say in an interview published today with the online games magazine:

Can you specify which controllers it will be possible to use for each of the VC games types (NES, SNES, PC Engine, N64)?

Nintendo: All virtual console games can be played using the Classic Controller or Nintendo GameCube pads. The Wii Remote can also be turned on its side and used as a traditional controller to play NES games

GameCube games are played with GameCube pads. Can they be played with the Classic controller too, for those who don’t actually have any GC pads?

Nintendo: Nintendo GameCube games can only be played using Nintendo GameCube controllers. The Classic Controller will not work on these games.

Apologies for any confusion I may have caused, but at least it’s now confirmed :)
