Nintendo Wii: Sony Says Nintendo Will Struggle Against Sony’s Motion Control

John Koller, Sony’s head of PlayStation marketing, believes that both Nintendo and Microsoft will have trouble competing against Sony’s proposed Motion Sensing device.

“I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooter and sports games. Those are going to be the areas that will really define success because they’re areas that, quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching from a differentiation standpoint.”

    1. Motion control has been in arcades for ages. I agree Nintendo made a statement by making the Wii based around motion control but really. I might have had more fun playing Twilight Princess on the Gamecube since you don’t have to swing the remote every second.

Games like Dark Side Chronicles, Metroid Prime, Wario Ware and Wii Sports are perfect for motion control though.

I think that PlayStation Wand thing looks kinda ugly but knowing Sony’s high tech ass who knows what Nintendo’s up against!

  1. Sony really is brain dead project natal is the best thing made so far it may still be in work but atleast you don’t have to carry a controller. And they are copying Nintendo

    1. It seems to me that a controller would be a lot more useful than trying to grip nothing. Stop whining fanboy and learn to use grammar.

    2. Alot of us *want* to carry a controller. Tactical feedback in games is important. Furthermore, if the objective is to add an element of realism and immersion to the game… well, in most games, the character is holding a weapon or device of some kind in his hand. Holding a controller is more true-to-form at that point than simply waving your hand around. If my character is using a handheld tool/device/weapon, why shouldn’t I?

      1. then you must admit that no game console is complete with out accounting for on of the largest factors in tactile feed back: resistive motion.

video-games are fun because they adhere to rules that mesh with and deliberately defy our expectations of cause and effect. with out the resistive force that comes with trying to throw a bolling ball(for example) fast, a bolling game risks not being taken seriously. with out the heavy burden of the “real world” and “physics” to enforce the intricacies of the real sport many people reduce the game to trying to trick the controllers (or cameras) to giving them a good score with out actually doing work.

I submit to you the following for consideration: the Exer-Station (formally the Kilowatt ) http://www.motionfitness.com/exerStation.html

a system capable of making it hard to doge left and right by making the joystick several feet tall and heavily weighted to resist you. that is right, Super Monkey Ball is now the hardest isometric workout you can hand a beginner. AND THEY LIKE IT!

young and trendy gamers may forgo the carefully constructed metaphors and detailed instructions of motion, but for the low low cost of just under $2000, they will feel the burn, and if they want to level up there poke’ mon or get that extra fancy they will have to come back for more!

        Today racing games,
        Tomorrow yoga.
We will build a hardier nerd, and one day they will take back this country!

  4. Dude,Sony should keep to what they do best, make single player games. That’s all I use mine for. I agree with everyone. They are totally copying the Wii. The Wii is totally fun system and party/family system. Now, the Xbox360 is great for multi-player games. Plus the controller is the most comfortable out of the three systems.

  5. Sony’s motion control technology is awesome and very exciting, but as far as competing with Nintendo’ Sony totally missed the trolley (or light rail) on this one.

They tried to derail the Wiimote with the Sixaxis at E3 06 and it was pretty clear even then that the level of interaction were on total different levels.

Nintendo’s motion controller is the de facto controller for their console and has a 100% install base, Sony’s motion controller will be a very successful accessory at best, but I don’t think it can corner the motion control market at this point.

    1. sony did not have the idea first. Nintendo had the power glove long before sony even got into console gaming. they may not be the exact same thing but they work off the same principle. useing motion to control a game. also microsoft had a motion controller back in the 90s for the pc. i cant remember the name of it though. i think it was the sidewinder freestyle pro or something like that. almost everything sony has done in console gaming has been copied from nintendo or some other console. and no im not a fanboy of any system. i love and play them all.

  6. HA! Sony also thought that the ps3 could compete with the Wii, and look how wrong they were with that. Now they are trying to steal from Nintendo’s market with a rip-off thing-a-ma-bob.

  7. if they want motion controls make a new system besides ps3 fans like it more because they can just sit down but when microsoft and sony get the motion controlers the players will have to go other than apples iphone so basicly nintendo microsoft and sony will get the less hardcor gamers and apple will get them

    1. Hey, Shut up. You call Games on the iPhone “Hardecore”? If ANYTHING is hardcore, it’s the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. It may not have a HUGE library of ‘M’ games, the only games on the iPhone are little puzzle games that you need to pay for every five seconds. Though I tend to defend Nintendo, I have to say, what is the least “hardcore”, Halo 3, Metal Gear 4, Metroid Prime, or Tetris. Go ahead, pick. I personally love the iPhone as much as the Wii, Xbox 3600, and Playstation 3. ( Or, almost the same.) I just don’t think a smart phone will EVER beat a console. By the way, are those typos, or are you the worst speller/grammar guy in the world. It seems ALL fanboys and trolls are dumb.
