Nintendo Wii: Ex Dice Boss Calls The Nintendo Wii A Virus And A Toy

Former DICE boss Fredrik Liljegren has rather harshly stated that the doesn’t believe the Nintendo Wii is an actual games machine, and has subsequently labelled the system as a “toy” and a “virus”.

“If I got paid to develop a Wii game I would do it. I would not put an original IP on the Wii today unless I thought I had an absolute home run,” he said. “Because the Wii, to me, I would describe it as a virus, that doesn’t stick.

“People have got to realise the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment focused product. People come home, someone, they play Wii for a bit, feel it’s really cool, blah, blah, blah, they go out and buy one. Ask people how often they play the Wii, that are not the core game consumer that buys one because they have an Xbox 360 and a Wii or a PlayStation 3 and a Wii,” he continued.

“The people that only own the Wii, ask that consumer how often they use their machine. They just don’t use it, it was cool, but they’re not gamers, so they put it away.”

Liljegren went on to say that Nintendo needs to find other alternatives to “the Wii Fit phenomenon”.

“Nintendo is smart in that way in that they realise this is not a video game machine, this is not a games game machine.”

  1. Translation: “HURRRR IT NOT HARDCOER LIEK ME”. Same bull you get out of the fanboys, letter for letter. Someone needs to purge the real virus here, and it’s this self-righteous crap.

  2. “People have got to realise the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment focused product.”

How can a toy be not entertainment focused?

  3. What a blowhard! It’s funny, how jealous people, like the Sony execs all spout their stupidity! When they sit and copy what nintendo is doing trying to play catchup!

  4. Really, he is right. The Wii is pathetic. read the article over again, stop your bias and realize that the Wii is nothing more than a toy. I’ve been playing games since I was 2 and I was raised on the SNES and N64 so you would expect me to be a Nintendo fanboy. I’m not, the Wii is the worst “system” in this gen. It only makes money and sales because it’s cheap and bought by kids’ parents who think it’s cool because of motion control. I realized the reason for it’s sales last Christmas when I got a PS3 and my aunt asked how it could possibly be better than a Wii. I explained how weak and unentertaining the Wii is and she was amazed. If my Wii were to crash, I would be conflicted to replace it. On one hand, there’s Metroid other M and all the games I have for it already, on the other, I’d be paying $200 to replay all my poorly presented games again. I know, my reasoning here seems all opinion based, but I think you all know my reasons behind saying this. The Wii has highly downgraded games, very little memory, poor motion controls, inferior graphics capabilities (no, I’m not a graphics whore), no DVD capabilities (which consoles have had since the beginning of the millennium), poorly done backwards compatibility, casual games out the wazzu, and bad game selection overall. Now then, let the flame war begin.

    1. like some guy below said, Video Games in general are toys and mainly i think This guy and the Sony guy who said something similar are jealous. Sony is in NO position to say anything b/c u can easily say they are jealous wii and Ds had a stronger run that ps2 in LESS the time. Wii sells more than ps3 and psp. DS sells more than psp and ps3. So he is in no position. Second the Dice dude probably has “beef” against wii cuz they make more money than him too. Or maybe IDK he just hating because he can. Lastly he could be hating b/c when celebrities(for example) start to get boring they release a statement about how someone sucks and whatever they do is stupid. Hes probably running out of flame so he needs to start a issue with nintendo.

  5. Has he even played the Wii???
And has he realized that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are desperately trying to copy the Wii?
    idiot

  6. Why do people get all up tight about the Wii? It’s a games console… It’s not exactly going around sleeping with peoples wife’s… If you really don’t like the Wii don’t buy one. Just don’t bitch about it like you’re nine and want mummy to buy you some sweeties. Get over it.

  7. I suppose the Wii in SOME ways may be considered a toy. A lot of families own a Wii because they consider it to be some-sort of play thing. That considered, there is also the epic games. Like Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, and Super Smash Bros Brawl. It’s really the best of both worlds.

  8. Well while this guy is a little harsh, for general Wii use he is correct. We play the Wii maybe once a week and nearly our 360 every other night.
I walk into Best Buy and Im overwhelmed @ all the 360 games i want to play. The Wii has only a handful of games Im interested in. And all those are first party. I buy 0 third party games on the Wii as most of them are subpar IMO.
This Guys mentality unfortunantly is similar to alot of other developers now. it’s no secret 3rd party games don’t sell well.

  9. lol @insult fail

All video games are toys. GTFO.

Okay, so the Wii is definitely a toy, the 360 is a ‘HARDCORE’ toy (that sounds pretty bad), but I guess the PS3 not so much – more an overpriced Blu-ray player.

It is true that you can’t create the same experience on the Wii as the 360 or PS3 or PC, but is that a bad thing? The Wii gets devs to innovate and find new ways to look at gaming, whereas the HD consoles are basically the same with marginally different interfaces. Without diversity the industry will stagnate and die, just like comic books did.

  10. I only own a wii out of this gens consoles for the simple fact that having access to nintendos 1st party games is worth the sea of sludge the majority of 3rd parties hash together to try make a quick profit.

Games should be fun more than anything (much like a toy) so is that such a bad thing?

Between PS3 and Xbox 360 there are only a small handfull of games I desperately want; MGS4, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddessy and Heavy Rain to name a few but honestly since the PS2 era games became too serious and less fun which I think is a bad thing in general but variation is also essential so the wii now almost solely owns the Fun segment and the majorty of those games are Sega or Nintendo itself. The games industry is getting too pretentious before it’s even matured

  11. “The people that only own the Wii, ask that consumer how often they use their machine. They just don’t use it, it was cool, but they’re not gamers, so they put it away.”

I have owned my Wii since launch. It was the only current-gen console I owned until this last Christmas. I play my Wii every chance I get! I own, and have beaten, more games on the Wii than I have on any of my other systems(NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, and now PS3)! I have around 30 Wii games, and I have beaten nearly all of them. I’m a college student, so I don’t have as much gaming time as I used to have, but let’s try something here. Let’s say that I’ve beaten 25 of my 30 Wii games, and have put around 30+ hours into each one, which I most likely have. That comes out to 750 hours of usage right there! That’s alot of hours for never using my Wii system.

Oh, and another thing. Since I got my PS3, I have only beaten one game on it. I’ve beaten 2 Wii games so far in the same amount of time.

  12. I do my “pro-gaming” on the computer, which usually is the superior gaming machine when it comes to graphics and controls. I have a wii and a ps3 available, and part from GTA IV, which I love, the wii is what I choose when I want to do some couch-gaming. The ps3’s main use is streaming media into my TV.

  13. This dude makes swedish people like me portray ourselves like assholes. I’m going to post the next section in swedish.

Just to state that I never play my Wii, go gently and fuck yourself up the ass. I just bought Muramasa: The demon blade, and it’s the most fucking hardcore game I’ve ever played. You want hardcore? Fuck you, fucking sweed, I’m going after you, you stockholmish douchebag.

  14. He’s got a point. I don’t play my Wii much at all. It’s mainly because there not much in the genre I’m interested in. Naming specific titles really just make it seem like “that’s it, that’s all they’ve got”. Which would be hard NOT to do in the case of the Wii. It’s not like saying “Oh the Wii has a solid library for FPS and a very strong RPG library”.

…besides, Virtual Console is really where it’s at with the Wii.

  15. why do sales only count when it is in one person’s favor over another? just sayin that sales were considered meaningless back when gamecube wasn’t making good numbers. Now, it’s as if sales are all that matter with wii….

  16. The Wii is a toy and not an entertainment based product… sort of. Unlike play station and x-box, games is all you can do on a wii. On an X-box 306 I have my music collection, photo’s, and I can watch movies. It’s an important part of the home entertainment system all together. However, I still play my Wii all the time, because I enjoy the games I got for it. The new super mario brother’s is great, and it brings back memories. Zelda is fun and exciting. Animal crossing is addictive as well. I am loving the mushroom men. The games are more fun.
