Nintendo 3DS: Sony Attempts To Dismiss The Nintendo 3DS

Sony’s John Koller claims that the Nintendo DS is primarily used by young children and therefore its successor, the Nintendo 3DS with its built in 3D capability’s, just won’t appeal to them.

“I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable. Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it’s an interesting move but one I’d like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”

  1. You know, the way Sony has talked about Nintendo lately, you would think that Sony was completely dominating both the handheld and console markets. Every time Nintendo does something innovative, sony mocks them for not being a real gaming company and only appealing to kids. And yet when Nintendo’s “gimmicks” become super successful, sony blatently rips them off. And to think this is the same company that just 10 years ago gave us the PS2…

    1. yeah i think the PS3 is nothing but games you can get n the 360 and rip-offs of nintendo, can they just come up with one original idea on there own?

        1. well yeah besides that nothing original (sorry i forgot to mention that) but there launching the move with a co-op 2-D platformer, now thats unoriginal

      1. Yeah except instead of halo you can get killzone resistance LBP, god of war, heavy rain.

        I like my (bro’s) ps3

    2. I completely agree with you TNT. I would be blown away if i was 8 years old and a portable games console had 3D capabilities. All i had at that age was a N64, and even a lot of todays DS games has better graphics than the N64, and the DS is the 3DS’ predoccesor ! (have i spelt that wrong? lol)

WATCH WHAT YOUR SAYING SONY !!!

    3. seriously, sony needs to shut up, sit down with its game designers (who are probably closet nintendo fans) and think of something new, or at least improve the classics.

  2. As much as I love Sony’s products (don’t worry, I love Nintendo’s too :P), the people at Sony really don’t think about what they say.

“I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable.”

No duh, sir, it was just announced YESTERDAY. You’d think this thing had been out for a year and that Sony was commenting on how terrible it is after selling only half a million units. No, it was announced about 24 hours ago. And like TNT said, the way they’re talking you’d imagine that they’re razing the field with the PS3 and PSP when both are in last place sales-wise.

They make great games, but they have no room to talk. Especially when they’re going to blatantly rip off the idea and create the PSP2, in 3D. Just you wait.

  3. Well, Mr. Koller I disagree with you. I’m 30 yrs old and have an original DS and a DS Lite so Nintendo consoles are NOT just for kids.

Have you guys noticed Sony’s trend lately? They like to rely on name calling when they have no innovative ideas to show us. This guys are pathetic.
Btw, I know many people my age or older that own Nintendo DSs and use them regularly.

  4. They say this but like everyone has said, just wait a few years. Sony will probably copy the 3DS just like they did with the Wii.

  5. You know I grew up with Nintendo in the 80s. I own all 3 next gen systems and I love my PS3, but I have to say that in my opinion, Its too early for any competitor to coment negatively because in the end, it will bite them in the butt. They all laughed at the Wii and look who’s on top sales wise.. For now. Since then Sony & Microsoft will soon unleash their version of a motion system similar to Nintendo’s Wii. I believe their studies are wrong almost always. I do however believe it’s too soon for a new DS again. And although I do have a 1st gen PSP.. I’m not to happy with it gamewise. So my advise is… It’s to early to say anything and they should adopt a look and observe position instead of blowing hot air just to make a comment and get their own house in order.

  6. for one thing, a kid who liked the DSi probably isn’t going to think “is this going to be as cool as the DSi?” there probably going to think “a new nintendo system? WANT!!!” and also, why wouldn’t a kid want 3D? when a new nintendo system comes out, I buy it the on the release date, 3D or no 3D. seriously, think before you speak sony.

  7. “Having been in the portable space for quite awhile”
…you have two portable gaming system, and you did with the second one is make it smaller.

  8. Jeez, I’m 14 I like nintendo system’s I’ve been playing them since I was 5 I like them I just turned 14 to jeez what a bunch of ass their critcizing when their at the bottom.Copy Cats

  9. Last time I checked more kids wit psp’s I’m 26 yrs old I love my ds screw sony all they do is steal ideas from every 1 else ne way

  10. Sony, shut up. Nintendo has been in the portable system work since before the 3rd generation. I think they know what they’re doing. And how ironic is it that they’re mocking Nintendo but they’re completely LOSING the 7th generation competition? Sony has 2 portable systems and all they changed for the second is the design. And Nintendo has 12. SO SHUT UP!

  11. Nintendo already had a chokehold on the handheld gaming world wayy b4 the PSP. Neither platform sucks, some like PSP others like DS, or DSi, and others like both.

  12. This is just stupid. This is why they aren’t doing as good as they could be. Sony is just too cocky, and the funny part, they’re loosing.

  13. A stretch that 8 to 9 year olds have a DS?
I dunno what Sony are thinking.
Everyone and their Nintendog has a DS.
I(25) have 1, my wife(23) has 1, my Mom(..) has 1, my Brother(12) has 1, my Aunt(3X) has one, 2 of her kids(11,9) have 1, all my college buddies(21-25) had one in college, I assume they still have them.
My Wife’s Dad(..) and sister (13) both have one.
Each of the households have a Wii too.

Poor Sony, I loved my PS and PS2, how you have fallen from grace.

  14. Wow, Sony is bitter and reaching isn’t it? Children 8-9 would be interested in ball-in-a-cup with wacky sounds if you gave it to them. This would just be icing on the cake for them.

…Sony is just being Jan to Wii’s Marsha now.

  15. So Sony mocks everything that Nintendo does, but then they go and pull a stunt like Playsation Move?! Fore shame Sony fore shame.

  16. Who ever said the Nintendo 3DS wont appeal to anyone is wrong. The Nintendo DS, DSL, DSi and DSi XL are ace so I believe that the Nintendo 3DS will be even better and with the 3d capabilities it will make it awesome. I really want the Nintendo 3DS.

  17. i hate sony, they keep on saying bad comments on what nintendo does but they immitate them if they realize it’s successful, motion controllers in gaming were successful cuz of nintendo and they’re immitating them( i said them that means sony and microsoft but i love microsoft) i’ve also read an article saying that natal and motionplus have no match against ps3’s move, they’re so cocky, i hate sony. think of it, natal is better than ps3’s move, we all know sony products costs too expensive that’s why i believe move will cost very expensive, but it’s obvious they will only give 1 pair of controller, and if you have brothers or sisters and you want to play with them, a pair of controllers will cost $100(just saw the price on ign) but if you want to play with others on natal, you wouldn’t need any controllers and no need to cost big amount of money. and move’s controller looks like a wiimote with motionplus, even ign realized this

  18. I like to think of Sony as the jealous one who always bashes other things better than their’s(everything), and Nintendo as that friendly guy that everyone likes and is always willing to listen and help, and Microsoft who just kinda uses other inventions for his own idea, like sorta of a “quiet stay out of the fray” guy.

All forms of DS have more sales than Psp’s will ever, same with Wii. The insulting they do definitely fall behind a line of jealousy. They should just face the fact that they arent leading the consoles anymore and just get on with their work instead of bash Nintendo and Microsoft. Maybe they;ve forgotten what position they’re in.

I’m 17 and I’ve owned a DS, DS Lite and DSi Xl. It’s obvious pretty much every age group has one of these… Or several.
