Nintendo: EA Admits That It Has Milked Its Franchises Too Much

EA’s CEO John Riccitiello has openly admitted that releasing sequel after sequel has ultimately damaged EA’s overall portfolio.

“If you go back seven years, we were the leader. And we dropped the ball. Our IP deteriorated, our costs went up, and we didn’t really have an answer for the rise of digital… Need For Speed ended up flat on its back. That annual sequel thing got to us. That was a very tough business run. We just didn’t have the portfolio.”

  2. About time they realised what they were doing. They destroyed the Ghost Recon franchise, turned it from one of the best tac sims of the day to a console run n’ gun shooter. EA need to have a drastic overhaul of their policies if they are to be successful again.

    1. Ghost Recon is Ubisoft… EA has admitted this for a while now, and honestly they’ve been experimenting with new IPs for a while, and only sometimes has it paid off.

  3. Call of Duty and Medal of Honor are running into that with Halo not far behind. Something new or perhaps old needs to be done. Maybe Team Fortres and Half Life 2 are old school, but they sure are fun – probably because they don’t take themselves to seriously like the first 3 franchises mentioned.

    1. Explain to me how the Halo franchise is “not far behind,” A new game came out like once every 3 or 4 years, not counting spinoffs.

  4. worst part and embarrassing is that they kept releasing sequel after sequel, yet they don’t sell like hell.

Take a look at Mario, motherf…r has been leaked to death, even though a next mario game comes out tomorrow it sells like hotcakes!

Modern Warfare is a good example of milking, same as Halo, though when you give fans what they’ve always wanted and introduce new things, they will buy it!

Unlike Capcom who give fans games they want yet tune the fark out of it “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, reason why majority dislikes Capcom.

  5. What do they mean “just didn’t have the portfolio”? That immediately raises alarms that tell me they still think way too much like a business. I wonder if they even play their games?

Also, as far as I am concerned Need For Speed always sucked after they stopped the NFS: Underground series. They completely killed it with some of the ideas they had – seriously who wants to spend hours chasing cars in a police cruiser. It might be fun for the first hour..

  6. @Matt Well they’re a business
I remember about 6 years ago when EA where the real bad guys of the gaming industry, sort of in the same position Activision is now. Simply put though new IPs almost always underperform
