Nintendo 3DS: Survey Asks Why Japanese Consumers Aren’t Buying Nintendo 3DS

Sales for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan have been disappointing to say the least, that’s not to say that they will remain that way, what with the quality titles that are destined to launch on the system later this year. However, Goo Rankings has conducted a survey asking Japanese consumers exactly what it is that’s stopping them from purchasing a Nintendo 3DS. Here’s the intriguing results:

  • 1. Price is high/waiting for a price drop
  • 2. Satisfied by DS/DSi
  • 3. Worried about eye strain
  • 4. Worried about getting sick from the screen
  • 5. Few launch titles
  • 6. Will buy once a game I want is released
  • 7. Satisfied by cell phone and smartphone games
  • 8. Satisfied by PSP
  • 9. The battery is weak
  • 10. It’s heavy and I don’t feel like carrying it with me
  • 11. Can’t play Game Boy Advance games
  • 12. The color I want isn’t available
  • 13. Can’t play Game Boy games
  • 14. I’ll save my money for NGP, thank you very much
  • 15. Waiting for a version with a larger screen
  • 16. Because you can’t move your DSi Points over
  • 17. The buttons layout looks hard to use
  • 18. No Famicom/NES in the Virtual Console

  1. 2, 4 and 6 are more or less the same really. Once some games start coming out for it then people will wanna move on.

The one about the Game Boy games is 0.o tho. Especially considering the GB/GBC games on the VC for it.

  2. The button layout looks hard? It’s nearly identical to every DS installment. The only addition is the analog and the Home button. *sigh* But these results would probably be mirrored in any country that is currently selling the 3DS.

    1. Clicking on the source reveals that 30% males asked, 70% women were polled.

I think this also explains the “ranking” as 5, 9, &16 were my concerns and why I wasn’t the first in line on release day.

  3. 18 should be added on June 6th… I don’t see a reason why the store can’t support games already done for Wii. I think this would greatly increase the potential of the shop if you could play NES/SNES/N64 games on 3DS (no 3D unless redone), or why you can’t play black/white, color, advance games on Wii (and eventually project cafe).

  6. This is really kind of sad. I don’t even know what the NGP is and it probably isn’t anybetter than DS

    1. The PSP’s successor. The one that just got a quality drop. Sadly. I wonder if this poll was held before or after it was announced…?

    1. apparently not to everyone else. I didn’t get mine till a few weeks ago. The battery life is pretty sad comparing to the DSi, DS lite, etc. It’s also sad when comparing to other products like cell phones, ipod touch, etc. Plus Nintendo wants you to leave the system on to generate these “coins” also straining this weak battery.

I don’t know about you, but it seems to take longer to charge the thing then it does to run the battery out.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the 3DS and it’s features, my major concern was the battery and lack of games (including the eshop) that prolonged my purchase. I was originally looking at august for the purchase, but a few of my friends convinced me to purchase sooner.

  7. Some pretty lame reasons there really. Fair enough that some games do need to be released. The GameBoy excuse is poor though, ya can’t play GB games on a DSi, I just use my GameBoy to play the games on, makes sense really. What with the eShop coming, this will soon change. Can’t wait for that, just to fire up the 3DS again!!!

  8. GetInTheVanIHaveCandy

These are ALL valid points, and most of them sum up why I haven’t bought a 3DS yet.

    •2. Satisfied by DS/DSi
For now, atleast my original DS can still play gameboy advance games. Much love for Castlevania: Circle of the Moon!
    •5. Few launch titles
!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is probably the biggest reason for me!
•6. Will buy once a game I want is released
!!!!!!!!!!! Again, another big one for me. The line up was utter sh!t.
    •8. Satisfied by PSP
Until they release REAL games, not this half-baked kiddy crap, then the PSP still serves my needs better then a 3DS could.
    •9. The battery is weak
Although I wasn’t TOO concerned about this point, it still has merit.
•11. Can’t play Game Boy Advance games
!!!!!!!! Huge HUGE point to me. It’s why I never bought ANY of the later versions of the DS/DSi. Don’t take away my ability to play Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance, Golden Sun, and many other classics. And DON’T double dip by telling me I can buy them AGAIN later on in the eshop.
    •12. The color I want isn’t available
!!!!!! Another huge point for me. The ONLY color choices are lame as hell. Even the blue is a light tone that’s clearly meant for girls. WHERE IS THE RED???? Nintendo and Sony ALWAYS pull this crap, I never understand it.
•13. Can’t play Game Boy games
While this point has merit, it still confuses me. Do they mean original game boy games? The black and white ((or green and black)) ones? Wow, impressive.
•14. I’ll save my money for NGP, thank you very much
Hate to say it, but at this point, the 3DS isn’t offering sh!t to me. I’d rather hold out and see what Sony has to offer.
•15. Waiting for a version with a larger screen
A larger screen, withOUT making a bigger unit, would be nice! But, a minor point for me.
•16. Because you can’t move your DSi Points over
I don’t know what DSi points are, because I always used my original DS, but this is probably another very valid point. I’m afraid Nintendo will just “offer” these older games on some eshop for purchase, regardless if customers already bought it before. Double dipping, and it’s what inspires hackers to pirate.
•18. No Famicom/NES in the Virtual Console
Now come on….these titles should be FREE!!!! You can find all of the classics, and most of the not-so-popular titles right off the internet. Making these titles free on the virtual console would attract a LOT of buyers to the 3DS

    1. you can buy them AGAIN later on in the eshop.
i wonder if they will be able to jailbreak a 3DS.
Dsi points are like microsoft points , but for the dsi

    2. Number 11 is the same as me saying I’m not buying a Wii because it doesn’t play my favorite N64 games because I’m not going to pay for them again. Oh wait, I can’t buy a Gamecube now, because I can’t play my favorite SNES games. And no N64 for me, because I can’t play my favorite NES games. I guess I’ll just stick with my NES so I won’t have to worry about it..

Seriously, people are allowed more than one console. No one will shoot you for having a DS and a 3DS. I have both and they haven’t exploded from being in close proximity.

  9. 6. Will buy once a game I want is released
NAWWWWW, REALLY!? Surprised it isn’t #1!

    Also…
    13. Can’t play Game Boy games

    Think about it.

    1. Not physical ones, but that’s what Virtual Console is for. They just need to announce Game Boy Advance games for it and actually advertise it, and they’ll get the portion of the crowd who don’t have or need it to play original cartridges.

    1. when the DS game is loading, hold “start” and “select” and it will be back to the regular ratio… you might be surprised hen u see this

  10. So here’s all the reasons I have a problem with:

2 & 3 – Worried about eyestrain and getting sick from the screen. It could be a concern since I know some people who get motion sickness from a fully-rendered environment in the first place, but most people should at least try it.

7 – Satisfied w/ Cellphone/Smartphone games. It’s valid, but it worries me to see how much this audience is growing. Of course maybe that’s what “they’ want us to feel. :P

10 – This was the worst reason I read. How can you call the 3DS heavy? I know so many sites have expressed complaints along the lines of “It doesn’t fit in my pocket,” but c’mon! This is an especially futile complaint when you compare the 3DS to the iPad.

11 & 13 – Can’t play Game Boy/GB Advance games. Read my post above for that. In short, Virtual Console.

16 – It’s surprising to hear anyone saved up a significant amount of Nintendo Points. Plus, content will be transferable as of the 7th in Japan, so they can just buy additional content and transfer most if not all of it over.

17 – If you don’t play actual game handhelds, it could be a bit intimidating. However, a person buying the system wouldn’t have that problem since they were probably born with a controller in their hands.

18 – It’s called 3D Classics. It’s an area of the eShop. I don’t know if they plan to update it, but you can get 3D versions of some NES and SNES games here.

19 – Default ratio of DS games on the 3DS. What Hades! said. They do need to just make that part of the Settings menu instead of hiding the function.

20 – I’ll wait until my friend buys one. Maybe you need to buy one so your friend will. Be a leader! Trailblazing is in this summer.

  11. It’s heavy? Are you kidding me? I own a 3DS and I barely even notice its weight.

I can understand the high price and some of the launch games, but come on, some of these are ridiculous. As for eye strain, I had no problems with the 3DS screen, in fact, it is much better than what I expected. People should give it a demo try before judging.

  12. Simple: there is just no enough good games yet coz its a new tech, it will blaze up sales soon when games starts rolling in, i have my 3ds with me all the time and its good, just 6 more days and the eShop will arrive

    1. No one here said it was. It’s not. That’s why I’m getting a battery extension (slide-on, not the Nyko ) when I finally get mine. That’s why people have to hold Start and Select to put DS games in their native ratio. That’s why a screen protector is 100% necessary to prevent marks on the top screen that could become scratches.

The sad truth is that we wouldn’t see a new model until at least 2 years from now, considering that was how long it took for the DS Lite to come out. Now we all know that some killer games are in development for it (don’t try and deny it, at least one game interests you), and we’ll most likely get all the one’s we’ve heard about so far by the end of next year. As a person who’s been a part of the community since last year’s E3, I personally don’t want to miss out on the potential fun just to have the next model. Most people wouldn’t say the same thing and I’d understand most of the reasons here (still not “too heavy.”. That’s just lame), but I want a 3DS now.

Plus, once we get a game with a rating 9.0 or above it’ll be easier to get one earlier than fight the crowds for one when a killer app shows up.

  13. wow…., lots of complaints here, I personally don’t mind buying the games over again, I mean, I’d rather not go back and buy an older console just to play an older game, also for the GBA thing yeah it can’t play them YET, yet being the key word here, the virtual console, in my view is just an opportunity to play games that I have never played before, that being said, I never did own a GBA in the first place, so it not being able to play GBA games doesn’t affect me
