Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Shares Fall To 5 Year Low After Wii U Reveal

In a dramatic turn of events Nintendo’s shares have fallen to a five year low after the company revealed the Wii U at its press conference yesterday.

The reason for the sharp drop is not readily apparent but it may have to do with the fact that there was no actual Wii U software shown off at the show, coupled with the fact that most of the information regarding the controller has leaked online before the press conference.

“There were high expectations from the new version of the Wii and this fell far short.”

“People had expected to see something more at a big event like the E3, but there wasn’t really anything more than what’s already reported.”

    1. lol, that’s perspective bro. To me, Vita for $250? THAT’s amazing.

I wanted to see some great exclusives from Nintendo, but they went too hard on their core franchises. Again.

  1. The wii u isn’t the hardcore console everybody expected, the controller isn’t even shaped like one, it looks more like an ipad…

I think it is good, but they need to change the wii-ness of it all

    1. I disagree, the console has the power to be a hardcore platform with Assasins Creed and Darksiders 2 and especially Metro 2 coming to it next year, its definitely going to be a hardcore console, what u don’t seem to notice that its a choice to use the New Controller, not a necessity, also as for the shape, players that have used it on the floor say it feels perfectly fine and “solid” in comparison with its screen-less companions.

    2. Hmm, I wonder why they feel the need to keep riding the Wii branding though?

Even a more clear cut name change, the Nintendo You, the Nintendo U, heck, the Nintendo (pretty much any of the rumours I was hearing before the announcement) seemed like a more catching and intriguing title to give people something to talk about.

The ideas in it look rather amazing, but the “u” is tiny adjustment to the Wii title, which kinda gives the idea that the whole console is a tiny adjustment to the Wii.

    3. Get off your ego. The term hardcore is total nonsense to begin with. But if this system isn’t “hardcore,” I don’t know what is. This system has stunning HD graphics (all those “core” gamers seem to care about), and it has 3rd party support for all those shooters and games that are on xbox/ps3. Also, the online is suppose to be on par with Mircrosoft’s. To top it off, it features a revolutionary controller. Which will no doubt change the way games are played as we know it.

      1. “Hardcore” gamers are going to automatically dismiss this solely due to it is another Wii console. Yes its different I know that, but try telling the idiotic fanboys that. Regardless of it, they will always look up to Sony and Microsoft.

And “hardcore” is such a pathetic term that I would wish to eradicate from the whole existance of time. What makes a game “hardcore”. Lots of blood? An M rating? Games are about having fun playing, not about how ‘cool’ you might think you look by playing them. I play some shooters, but I also play OTHER games, so what does that make me? Hardcore? please, I don’t want that bullshit label.

      2. lol, that’s perspective bro. To me, Vita for $250? THAT’s amazing.

I wanted to see some great exclusives from Nintendo, but they went too hard on their core franchises. Again.

    4. It is easier a hardcore gamer’s platform. The announcement of Ninja Gaiden, for example, was a video of the bloodiest game ever seen on a Nintendo console. The Wii U is also more powerful than the PS3.

    5. I also disagree considering that companies are showing MAJOR interest in the Wii U it shows because companies are going to be revealing assassins creed, modern warfare, need for speed, ghost recon etc. It is hardcore and the graphics on both the tv and the touchscreen are 1080p so it is a hardcore machine!

  2. I too expected to see the physical console at E3. The controller is interesting but to people who have money staked in Nintendo it must have appeared to them as if Nintendo is refusing to let go of the wii; that they have no more ideas left except to create better accessories for it.
Until people can see the new console and take it apart both figuratively and literally to their satisfaction, and be convinced of the promised capabilities, there will still be that heavy cloud of doubt.

      1. It’s underreported, because there is nothing to report about it. The controller is what is revolutionary. The console doesn’t do anything but calculate. It’s appearance isn’t going to alter gameplay at all. The only things that need to be reported about it are the technical specifications, and I’m sure Nintendo has very good reason for not reporting that. Two that come immediately to mind are the hardware likely not being set in stone as they are still debating which should be used for consumer cost reasons, and Nintendo not wanting the competition to know what to beat when the competition decides to develop their next consoles.

So with technical specs out of the question, what else is there to mention about the console itself? It’s got a nice frame… and it has a power button. Did I mention the power button?

  3. in my opinion the wiiu isn’t special at all, it’s a giant DS, i have a 3ds for that and an original one to boot, the only reason I see myself getting one would be the same reason I got a wii, for the legend of zelda, and super smash brothers… although the wii did seem to hold more promise then what actually came to be from it which was a disappointment, i don’t even think the wiiu is able to play gamecube games :/

    1. The New controller is not designed to be a portable device Iwata said that specifically in his presentation, the controller was made to give players new choices in the game world, and its functionality to the game world, and again, the controller is completely optional to use, the console is still very powerful and u can use a regular screen-less controller on it as well.

      1. You should understand that on some games the controller may be required. Which is good. If it was just an optional addon, wouldn’t that lose the purpose?

        1. For some games the developers may find very good use of the controller, but a game like Super Smash bros, even on the original Wii, had every controller option available, the controller is completely optional and depending on how the developers choose to use it or not use is completely up to to them, but yes a lot of games will use it, I agree, but not every game will “Need it” just like every game on the Wii doesn’t need motion and every game on Xbox doesn’t “Need” Kinect.

    1. Agreed. (If I were a stock-buyin’ guy)

It’s simple. Nintendo has been flaunting hardware for 6 months. That’s it. 90% hype.

As innovative as the Wii (original) was, people forget a critical fact – it’s success was carried and driven by the packaged SOFTWARE that really let you experience the Wii. Hell, I still pull out wii bowling or boxing frome time to time.

Wii-fucking-sports. That’s what the 3DS is missing, that’s what Wii U is missing. If Nintendo launched te Wii with “hopes” that wii sports would come out in 6 months… The Wii would have tanked. FACT.

Dear Nintendo, We need the “wii sports” of the 3DS. We need a GAME that has replay-ability that doesn’t pull punches and flexes the 3DS’ muscles. The same is and will be true for Wii U.

Maybe this will be OOT? Sure, Maybe. And Maybe if you had launched OOT with the 3DS, your stocks would be at their highest yet.

“Stop trying to hit me, and HIT ME!” – morpheous.

      1. How can you protest that The U will not come with a game? It likely will. Also, the 3DS came with several casual built-in software.

        1. You don’t see what I’m saying?

And yes, I hope Wii U DOES come with a game. That’s the point I’m trying to make.

      2. Well, in the show-floor at E3 they have Chase mii and the other shooter game with miis ans Shield pose. So they’re probable already trying out ideas for that.

  4. It was amazing realy, but for the E3 conference they could’ve shown more. It’s for now 2012 and there’s no first views of the platform or the sistem. I’m excited about the Wii U, but a bit frustrated about the E3.

  5. Wii U has a lot of potential, I don’t think some people are seeing that. Especially the investors, I don’t think they like the risk. I’m sure once specs about the console are released everything will even out.

What Nintendo failed to do at the press conference is show off the actual system, they focused too much on the controller of the Wii U.

  6. Agreed. (If I were a stock-buyin’ guy)

  7. Probably has a bit to do with them admiting they used PS3 & 360 footage in their keynote. Not good. Not to mention many reports saying the screen controller is uncomfortable after a short period of time.

    1. Yeah, I’m lazy and it’s not that I don’t believe u, but could u post a link where they said they did that?

    2. I don’t know where you’re getting your crap from, but it has been reported that the controllers are quite comfortable (IGN). And as for PS/Xbox footage, I’ve never read or heard this anywhere. Stop making shit up.

      1. Talk about “rude” and “fanboy”, BlueBlob. He didn’t make it up. They’re opinions from other guys at Twitter and co. He was probably just saying their thoughts out loud here.

        1. it’s cool, After being in this industry 20+ years I’m not bothered. I however did come back and post the link as asked. Reggie I guess didn’t see a big deal in it but many others did.

  8. Someone pinch me because it feels like 2006 all over again. Like many others and most other Nintendo fans, I was on an emotional high simply because the unveiling of a new console does that to me but after letting the reveal/news sink in, I realized that Nintendo did the same thing when they revealed the “Revolution” at E3. 100% of the focus was on the “unique” controller that was supposed to revolutionize gaming. No games where shown, the console specs where completely avoided, even by Reggie in a post interview as if those things weren’t important or shouldn’t be the focus. Nothing was shown of it’s online store, capabilities, or anything. They simply slapped the letting U onto the name in a vein effort to convince hardcore gamers that this console isn’t just a supped up version of the Wii. Hell it’s the GameCube 3.0 under the hood. There’s nothing new or groundbreaking about the Wii U.

    1. Are you kidding me, nothing new? How about the revolutionary controller which nothing like it has ever been seen before in a home console. On top of that, the graphics are top-of-the-line. Gamecube 3. 0? Guess you could also call it NES 6. The Cube was a great system but this is obviously nothing like that or any other system. I think you are either very ignorant, or are a troll, or both.

  9. disapointed...sigh

ok, the console has the power to be a hardcore full 1080p console with better graphic, once utilized, than the ps3 and 360, however it only uses one controller with the full amount of buttons as a regular controller. So i feel like its an hd wii with ONE new controller while the rest are wii remotes. the software lineup trailer i saw, no game looked like a popular franchise, it was all just random 1st person shooters and nothing made me want to but it. Sure, the 1 player titles will be amazing because you wont have to use the wii remote which i cant believe they kept. the reason 3rd party developers wouldnt make games for wii was 1. the low quality graphics and 2. the lack of buttons and use of motion controls.

  10. The Wii U looks good. I was hoping to give Nintendo a second chance if they get it right in gaming, gaming rewards and online gaming. Basically, every gaming field. But, I’m fearful for two reasons.

    1. The Wii U seems to be what the original Wii should have been, since some of its games will be ported from PS3 and Xbox 360.

    2. With no. 1 being said, I’m anxious over the possibility of a possible PS4, or Xbox the 3rd, beating the Wii U’s specs by next year or so. Microsoft and Sony did that once to the Wii.

BTW, are there any opinions from guys out there who’d tried its controller? It looks rather uncomfortable, so I was just wondering since yesterday.

  11. Drop all the Bias.

You know and I know that N builds damn good gaming units that could potentially crush the market, (as the Wii and DS have proven)

Nintendo’s execution of the 3DS and unveiling of wii u has been one epic dissapointment after another.

(yes, using our nintendo goggles, we can see the potential, but I want commitment)

It’s costing shareholders, and it’s pissing off fans. *raises hand*

    Step it up N.

  12. I wouldn’t think the Wii U would have anything to do with it. Seeing as how Sony’s and Microsoft’s announcements were comparatively lame, it is safe to predict Nintendo will dominate the next generation console wars. Whether or not the news is ‘new’ is irrelevant. They have the best console and will surely rake in a ton of money with it. “I already knew they were going to make it, therefore I don’t want to be a part of their coming, inevitable, huge profits,” is perhaps the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

I imagine it would have more to do with the American and Japanese economies.

  13. Not surprised. Like someone else said this just looks like a giant HD DS that you can’t bring with you on the go. Nintendo messed up by not having any actual games to show. They should have at least prepared a trailer for Pikmin 3– they gotta have SOMETHING to show of that game. They tried making up for it with the premature announcement of Smash Bros, but that was ridiculous, they haven’t even started development. If you’re gonna announce something that big you better have something other than promises to give.

  14. We still have an E3 to come until launching. The next one will show up everything Wii U can do, IMO.

  15. Lowest for 5 years.
That must mean the last time the shares dropped was when the Wii was announced then. :D
    People fear change. :D

  16. Hmm 5 years….that would be 2006….hmm didn’t the console that sold the most units get released around then? Oh and this console is very much awesome because you “hardcore” gamers don’t matter as much as you think you do. If a game doesn’t have decent graphics then it is automatically not fun and isn’t worth it. Well i say it is, this console has the graphics and the 3rd party support that the wii lacked. What exactly makes a game hardcore anyway? Most hardcore gamers just play crap like call of duty all the time. Is that hardcore? To be able to take a sound cussing from a 12 year old on xbox live? Well shit i guess it is

  17. I had to comment about this, of course they still wanted to use the Wii name, since it has given so much to them. What I didn’t like about the Wii is that Wii Sports was a demo of how this amazing controller was supposed to be used & they never then gave us the real thing, like real games with that controller, I know there are a few games, but they stayed there in that Mii world with demo looking games to see how the controller plays.

But look it this way, they have Wii Virtual Console, WiiWare, Wii Points, etc. And all those stuff like the Wii Balance Board that they don’t wann throw out. So they still want to make a connection with it, specially without the connection people could be like “I already have a Wii & an HD console (PS3 or Xbox 360), so why buy a new console?

So, first Nintendo is making this look like just A NEW CONTROLLER for the Wii, in the trailer & presentation the actual console was nowhere to be seen. So is this a console based on the controller? Even when the Wii was announced the first thing they showed was the console.

I don’t care they still use the name Wii, it’s ok. But in the presentation they should have showed the console & make it look more different than the Wii.

Also, at the E3 presentation they didn’t show any actual Wii games coming this year, like if we fans didn’t have a Wii there waiting for new games, only Zelda, what about Kirby Wii, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora’s Tower. Also I would LOVE to see Baten Kaitos 3, Lost kingdoms 3 & Eternal Darkness 2. & also why show a console when you don’t have games for it ready?

I hope next E3 is about GAMES and no more gimmicks & hardware.

  18. What do they mean it fell short? It’s Fucken awesome! I’m gonna purchase one and I’m sure many will also.

  19. Oh good. Now would be a good time to buy some stocks with Nintendo since they’re worth a lot less so that when big 3DS and Wii U games come out I’ll get a ton of money.

    1. THIS. Right now I have no reason to blow $300 on a 3DS because there’s nothing good coming out for it until winter (minus Zelda of course). And then I feel like I might as well just wait for the redesign to be announced next year. Why should I pay $300 now for crappy games and little bonus features when I can pay less next year for a better design and at least a few good games? It’s ridiculous.

I fear that Wii U is gonna go in the same direction– nothing good for 7-8 months after it’s release and Nintendo wondering why people aren’t interested in the OMGINNOVATIVE controller… It’s because we’d rather have Smash Bros at launch than some Mii mini games and third party crap. Although I’ll admit that at least the 3rd party previews look to step things up a bit.

  20. I really think Nintendo just had a bad presentationof the console. Everything about it seems good, but only if you take a minute to think about it, which non-fans and investors didn’t do. Nintendo still has plenty of cash from the Wii sales, so I’m personally not worried about their stocks.

  21. The screen controller’s display isn’t HD as someone stated. I read about the PS3/360 WiiU footage on Game Informer & Kotaku. Actually I’m quite a big N fanboy. I own every system and will own this new one as well.

  22. Nintendo is looking to transform the “Hardcore gamers” with new innovative ways of playing hardcore games. This will be the time to change the gamers from using dualshock controllers (Classic/Original Gamers) into using new controllers (Evolving Gamer)

  24. 5 years ago, uhm, sounds like that was the year of the Wii’s release, nothing to worry about n.n

PD: yep, the word “Hardcore” makes me feel sick…

  25. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, OK only a slight minority of us see that Nintendo clearly stole the show at E3, again!
Nintendo has the most innovation and strongest exclusive franchises, this time they announce a console with the features of the powerful PS3 and popular xbox, and a revolutionary controller… Well best of both worlds, Nintendo has it all now, this thing will be huge
