Nintendo Wii: New Zelda Skyward Sword Story Details Emerge

One of my most anticipated games of this years E3 event had to be The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The trailer that Nintendo showed off at the event showed that the game is set to be a fantastic swan song to the Wii’s illustrious career. Sadly we don’t know too much about the games storyline but thankfully Zelda Informer has revealed some interesting titbits regarding precisely that.

“Link and Zelda live in the land of Skyloft, high above the surface world below. One day Link participates in a birdriding competition as part of a festival celebration. The winner of the competition gets a prize from Zelda. After winning the prize, Link takes Zelda out on a date and flies her over the clouds on his bird (okay, so the game’s probably less ‘high school’ about it, but I figure this gets the point across). That’s when disaster strikes. A giant tornado appears, sucking Zelda down to the surface world. Link gets charged with rescuing her and receives his traditional green garb as well as the titular Skyward Sword. It’s at this point that we meet the sword’s spirit companion, Phi – she’ll guide Link as he journeys across the surface to rescue Zelda. From there, Link travels down to the surface and enters the Sky Temple (the demo dungeon), where he suspects Zelda is hidden. After fighting through the traps, he encounters Ghirahim, the Demon Lord who rules the surface realm, who states that he and his tribe – yes, he’s not alone – are after Zelda. You duel him, he escapes, and the adventure continues from there.”

Other details:

  • The bird demo is not the very, very beginning of the game; you’ll be meeting the people of Skyloft and going through some story sequences first
  • You can press Down on the D-pad at any time the pointer is engaged to recalibrate the controller
  • Phi is actually voice-acted, and speaks in Midna-like gibberish
  • Dungeons are heavily non-linear, and there are significant portions of even just the part of the Sky Temple we experience on the show floor that can be skipped (including the Beetle upgrade)
  • You can actually stun Ghirahim during the first phase of the fight by moving your sword in a circle to confuse him, similar to the eyeball obstacles; wait for an opening, and strike! You don’t actually need to do this to defeat him, though, so it looks as though bosses as well as dungeons can be tackled in multiple ways and don’t have one set solution
  • Ghirahim may actually not be the final boss

    1. I failed, read every. single. letter. :D

In the end, the bad guy will be ganon, even tough he’s not born yet.
      Maybe ganon’s ancestor?

      Food for tough…

  1. I don’t really like how the dungeons will have areas that can be skipped that have upgrades and things in them. However, if these rooms show up on the map that should be fine. I’m really looking forward to see how this leads into Ocarina of Time (if this is a /direct/ prequel).

    1. You should be happy with the skip-able areas, look at it from this direction:

      1. You can possible discover the dungeons further after you’ve beaten them and find un-found secrets

      2. If they can be skipped, it means the items those rooms contain must be optional and thus “bonuses”, wich can be cool upgrades and things like that :D

      3. Come on, zelda, what has a Zelda game ever done wrong by adding new ideas to the games? :)

    2. All the great original Zelda games had nonlinear content. The first Zelda was completely nonlinear. A Link to the Past had a lot of unnecessary bonus items (magic cape, ice rod, etc.) that made the game more fun. Even Ocarina of Time gave you the option of completing the later dungeons in a nonlinear order. I say a return to the good old days of nonlinearity in the Zelda series is the best possible move.

  2. on gamestops list(I know not most trusted source) but amazon has it too-it says skyward sword cones out nov.20,2011

  3. Awesome news about Down on the D-Pad automatically recalibrating the Wiimote!

I was worried that I’d have to pause too often to do that, but they found a way around it. Yay! ^_^

  5. sorry if i gave mark this tip everyone. thought i should share it with those of you who havent found it. it doesnt really spoil much, it gives you the backstory of what is going on in this is all. the zelda instructional booklets even do this same thing. except for Ghirahim not being the final boss.

  6. CANT WAIT>>>>>>GANNONS RISE WILL BE BROUGHT BY THE INTERLOPERS……..gannon will find out that a Hylian ( skyloft link ) has banished his families clan and will be pissed at hylians.. causing Gannnon to hunt and find link’s family = the beginning of ocrina of time…where gannon starts a war..in look of the next link and kidnapes young zelda knowing this link will find his princess…..and then finds that all the two and him have the triforce in them…

  7. As far as I know, this isn’t going to be the last Zelda game, so maybe you should change the phrase “Swan Song”.
