Nintendo 3DS: Pachter Believes PlayStation Vita Will Rob Nintendo’s Market Share

Outspoken industry analyst Michael Pachter is under the impression that Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation Vita will rob Nintendo of precious market space. Pachter also believes that Sony’s handheld will most “likely contribute to further declines in Nintendo’s share price”. Do you believe that the PlayStation Vita is as big a threat to Nintendo as Pachter is making out to be?

“We continue to believe that handheld game sales will suffer in correlation to the growth of smart phone sales, although we think that the handheld games business will remain a healthy niche for the foreseeable future,” he said in an investor note.

“With that said, Sony’s announcement of PS Vita pricing (at $249) led many investors to believe that Sony and Nintendo will divide a shrinking handheld market, and likely contributed to further declines in Nintendo’s share price.”

“Nintendo, in particular, saw its share price decline, largely due to continuing uncertainty about its handheld business, and skepticism about its planned launch of the Wii U next year,” he added.

“The company did not provide specs or pricing for the device although the hardware was truly impressive, it is impossible to determine whether it will succeed or fail without knowing how it compares to the competition in terms of pricing and performance.”

  1. For me it boils down to this:
If the analogue sticks on the Vita are anywhere near as bad as the one on the PSP, I will not buy it.

    1. Well, it won’t be a nub, that’s for sure. It will be like the analog sticks found in the PS3 and Xbox 360’s controllers.

  2. People are making the same assumption based on the technology they have and the price point. They are pretty much the same in price. However, the PSP has had an even worst life span than the Wii, except in Japan where the system continues to sell. I like the tech on the Vita, but the games available for it were not that great, except for a few. Now, with games like Uncharted, Killzone, etc., they completely killed my interest in the Vita. I want something else other than the “console experience.”

Also, we all know Ocarina of Time boosted sales. Mario, Mario Kart, and other games this year will do even better, especially in the holidays. And that’s not even counting Pokemon, which we all know is pretty much the behemoth of portable gaming (a mini game like Angry Birds is not included here).

    1. I can agree with you on one thing OOT is a legendary game and have never gotten tired of it even after 12 years of playing it. but the problem with nintendo is they keep rerunning games with little or no additions. If you think for one second that pokemon is a “behemoth” of a handheld game then you sir are sorry. With the continuance to add stupid looking pokemon with even more stupid names the game has not changed except for adding 3d graphics since it came out. With the addition of the 3DS I now know nintendo is just shitting out systems with no innovation or beefed up hardware. Being that the only difference between the 3dS and the DS is basically 3D. Nintendo has always been behind the times in termed of technology for years. Look at the wii which has a controller that lacks any good tech. If it weren’t for children the wii would have failed. The gamecube was even worse with having next to no online capable games when the xbox and ps2 had many. Nintendo has failed after the n64 (which was one of the best systems ever). The vita will destroy the 3DS or should I say yet another stupid remade DS exept for the addition of finally ONE analog stick. Which the psp has had since 2005. In terms of hardware and innovation the psv has the 3DS beat in all aspects. So you can keep your crappy rerun children’s games while I will be playing a big boy handheld. 3DS and nintendo has failed!

      1. HAHAHA, ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

You really don’t see how Pokemon seriously helps Nintendo in portable sales? I’m sorry, I guess the millions of games Pokemon has sold is small compared to your precious Call of Duty or Halo. All you said in your post was your opinion (which, I know this may be hard to believe, ISN’T fact,) so do some reading before you go spouting bullcrap.

      2. Pokémon is the second best-selling franchise in video gaming, right after Mario, so yeah, it is a “behemoth” of a handheld game.

      3. Man just to end it all just get both that’s what I’m going to do I don’t have a ps3 or a wii I’m a xbox 360 guy but I like both handheld systems I luv Mario and I luv metal gear both systems will have different games and do different stuff

      4. Haha!!! This guy was soooooo wrong, had I known about this site two years ago I could have said this then: the 3ds hardware is waaay better than the original ds. just look at OoT 3d and tell me that the original ds could have done that.

  3. Didn’t they say the same thing about the PSP? Look what happened with that.

I think there is a threat from the Vita. Mainly because I feel the 3DS hasn’t had the huge launch it was supposed to not to mention the fact that we still have no idea about releases for tons of the stuff shown at E3 2010 (Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 3 etc etc)

What Nintendo NEED to do is a month or so prior to Vita is get a huge game out. be it Mario, Luigi’s Mansion or Mario Kart. A huge game that will want people buying.

Vita doesn’t have the games announced. Relying on Little Big Planet and Uncharted. However those two just so happen to be Sony’s biggest games.

Once Mario, Kart, Kid Icarus etc are out the console will start to sell.

    1. as much as i want kid icarus, it wont boost sales. its been to long since its previous game, if they kept the franchise going on the n64, gamecube, ds, and wii… well than it would make a difference. i hope nintendo makes kid icarus into a series now

      1. I think they are my friend since they took the design of pit from SSBB then this may show that he’s coming back

      1. except that 3DS had nearly a hundred games announced for it, and look how that ended up. Vita may have SOME games coming, but it dosen’t mean that any of them are going to be system sellers, kinda like most of the couple dozen out for 3DS.

    2. The games announced for the Vita already outweigh the initial release title for the 3DS.
Also the Vita has the price point which makes it competitive and that is what really killed the original PSP, it was too expensive to compete with the DS, now they are matched in price with much more powerful hardware.

  4. One thing on Vita. There games for touchscreen abilities. Uncharted was stupid. You touch somewhere he jumps right there. Lean Vita to the side and let him fall and turn back to the right position and the challenge area is past. Also they never said why it got a touchpad on it’s back. Vita may challenge 3DS it a tight war for Handheld systems. But Vita’s game using touchscreen look weak.

    1. The rear touch screen functionality was revealed. If you did any research besides watching E3 then you’d know that. The back is used to climb objects such as ropes and latters. Also, all of these controls are OPTIONAL. Which means that you can use the buttons just like normal. Plus, climbing in Uncharted is not meant to be a challenge, it’s just a way to get somewhere

      1. Some people are so fuckin stupid. I wish these stupid ass fuckin people would just die inexplicably and make the world a better place for those of us that actually use our brains.

  5. I think the Vita will ‘win’ in terms of launch sales, but the 3DS will swing it round at the back end of this year or maybe early next year as games like Super Mario 3D, Mario Kart 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Animal Crossing 3DS, Kid Icarus, Star Fox 64 3D (Lylat Wars god damn it!) etc. etc. come out.

So basically in terms of hardware sales the PS Vita will come out on top, but in terms of Software sales Nintendo will win. As for the holiday season, if Ninty get some 3DS + Mario Kart bundles going… guess who’s won the market.

    1. Definitely, already have bought more 3DS games than I probably ever will for Vita where I expect to
Get Uncharted and a couple of others. The best titles are yet to come from 3DS, Super Mario and Luigi’s mansion, Mario Kart are must-buys for me.
I hope they do a MarioKart/3DS bundle so friends can join in, with multiplayer. Nintendo would win the sales war there, because Wipeout multiplayer can be played on the PS3 as well, so friends don’t need to buy a Vita to play with you.
Vita’s great but Nintendo’s games are just more
      Interesting.

    2. I agree with you totally. PSP has a history of terrible software, the DS has such an excellent library of games and I hope the 3DS will continue the trend. This is not to say the Vita will not have any great games, there will just be less of them.

  6. 3DS is gonna come back from its weak launch. Plenty and plenty of good titles being made for it unlike ps vita. Sony thinks they can slap on the same price tag and then say we have no competition. Watever, I see no interest in vita nor anything completely new or innovating. Portable PS3…

  7. I think in part, Nintendo is feeling the effects of launching a lite version of the ds shortly after the launch of the original ds. It had to be done to save the ds but now it has become the expectation for many people. This comment has been repeated over and over on the internet:

“There aren’t enough compeling games, I’ll wait for the 3DS Lite and good games to come out”

    1. i didnt hear bout the 3DS Lite… and i doubt theyll make one, after the DS lite every ds took a similar size and weight.

      1. They said they don’t plan on making one cuz the 3ds is crammed already. In essence, the 3ds is the lite version.
as for 3ds VS Vita it will be close. Vita’s launch should be better because there will be one or two bestsellers at launch. But in the long run the 3DS might Pull through because the thing that keeps Nintendo on top is their long list of exclusive titles. And we’re getting a taste of those from November onwards.

  8. The truth is, portable gamers are mostly casual gamers, so most of them won’t even consider buying a PS VITA.

  9. I think that the 3DS will win in the long run. Nobody knows the price of the PS Vita games yet, and there are going to be many major releases for the 3DS in the next 7 or so months. This means that when the PS Vita launches, it will have to go against a strong line up of 3DS games.

  10. Most of vitas line up games are ps3 games. The only interest I have in it is the game transfer from my ps3 to vita. But the fact that Sony has stated that the vita is not a portable.

Clearly this anaylist is looking at the wrong aspect of what Sony Is aiming for with the vita.
I’m not saying it will fail but nintendo has come back with sales, ds launch is a perfect example so there’s no split in a shrinking market. :/

Also nintendo share price went down because of the Wii U the 3ds has had little impact on that outcome, again this happened when they announced the Wii.

People just over analyze stuff without basing it off facts only pure speculation. Zzz

  11. well well well, everyone here feels like bn expert now, we wont know much untill it comes out sure you feel like the console has no good games p but its not even out there yet! besides nintendo’s depending too much on the same classic games, of course I love my 3DS and the ocarina of time remake but that doesn’t mean I’ll just try to talk trash about PSVita lets just wait and try it out for ourselves and if yov don’t have just shut up because you don’t even know what its like xD “posting via psp :) “

  12. I think it’s unfair to say that the 3DS is gonna fail. The 3DS has a great line-up of games comming soon. However, the PS Vita also has great line-up of games too (for the PS3 gamers). We have Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, LBP, Mod Nation Racers, Street Fighter X Tekken, and many more titles comming. And judging by the properties of the PS Vita, it’s gonna be around for quite some time. And the DS users are gonna be moving on to another handheld before Sony even feels the need to crank out another PSP. Nintendo likes to plan short term, Sony plans long term. And developers are goonna want to work on PS Vita more than 3DS because of all of it’s capabilities. So, aside from a huge list of exclusive title’s hitting PS Vita, I can also expect a lot of 3rd party titles from Capcom, EA, Activision, 2K, Konami, Namco Bandai, WB Studios and more. But if I buy a 3DS, i’ll get Nintendo’s exclusive games. And most of those games are just the all the characters playing every freakin sport in the world. They’ve been. Doing that routine for way too long. Except Zelda, that’s always gonna be awesome

    1. But all those companies you just named have contributed many great titles to Both Wii and DS. Nintendo isn’t void of 3rd party support. They have that and they’re exclusives just like Sony.

    2. Ah right how’d the long term turn out for Sony? Their PSP has slummed now, look at the PSP go it was discontinued after about 2 years but the ds still sells like hot cakes even after 6-7 years but yea short term :l

  13. pachter is a little bitch who hates nintendo and will say anything to bash nintendo.

while the vita will do better than the PSP, it will not do better than the 3DS. nintendo has too much of a base built up to fall that easily. plus with those stupid smartphone games. it will be a bloodbath.

  14. The psp looked like it was going to BLOW the DS out of the water. That turned out to be the farthest thing from reality

  15. I think that playstation vita will be the better handheld when comparing to the 3ds. I wish nintendo would create a whole new handheld design unstead of keeping the ds concept. I dont think that vita will cause a decrease in nintendo’s shares though

  16. Wait, wait, wait…when has Michael Pachter ever been right about anything? Just sayin’. :P
I do believe him this time though. The 3DS and the PS Vita are releasing at the same price point, and the value-to-dollar ratio is in the Vita’s advantage. It’s not a $100 difference like it was with the DS and the PSP, and that alone will capture many “comparative consumers.”

    1. Yea that’s great and all but WHAT ABOUT THE BATTERY LIFE? they have yet to answer that question, if it’s so superior to the 3DS and the 3DS has “bad battery life” then what about the Vita? Sony isn’t the most innovative either so I’m not sure how they managed/will manage the bl

      1. The battery life will be comparable to the original PSP. i.e. the same as the 3DS’ battery life (not so good). The 3DS is pushing two images simultaneously, even though you only see “one.” This is a major drain on its battery. The Vita has only one image to push, but it’s a higher quality image (more power), which also brings its battery life down. In either case, the battery life is comparative.

        1. The PS Vita is using an OLED screen, which has a low consumption rate since it doesn’t need a backlight.

          1. Oh, yes, this is true. I think it will be offset by the sheer amount of power the rest of the system will consume though. It’s got a quad-core processor for example.

In any case, I’m getting it, regardless. I’m a sucker for handheld devices of all kinds. I had a blast with the original PSP, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one as well (especially if it gets a Monster Hunter game! Logged in over 600 hours on that series alone. :-P)

I’m a fan of games. Pure and simple. I enjoy all kinds from all companies. 3DS and Vita (and even iPod Touch) can coexist, as far as I’m concerned. :-)

  17. Wait… Didn’t Sony say that the PSVita was on a whole new level, and did not even consider the 3DS an opponent? Than why are you bragging about how much this will damage the 3DS sales?

  18. I’m personally much more interested in the 3DS interacting with the Wii U than just playing PS3 games on the PSV. It may have a few extra tricks to add like the back touch panel, six-axis and so forth, but it still wouldn’t be something I haven’t played before.

The world is finally ready for what Nintendo tried in 2003 because of the convenient form it takes (no cords), and that interaction between the home space and portable space is going to be something that Sony, Microsoft and Apple will investigate for future products. Well, Microsoft especially since I wouldn’t imagine Windows Phone 7 being the portable to do this with. :P

  19. When will these flaimbate articles end? I own a 3DS and can’t wait for the Vita, but people on this site are only one sided and hate every company except Nintendo

    1. I don’t. I own all major consoles and all handhelds. Hell, I’ve owned every console and heldheld ever made in the history of video games at least once! Haha! I have a 3DS, and I will be getting a PS Vita as well. What can I say? I’m a game junkie, and I always gotta have my fix for the latest and greatest. :-P

  20. Robert says JUST SAYIN’ too much.

    http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lmolc7OU0P1qg6r8ao1_250.jpg

In any event, Nintendo has a legit competitior, but with the handheld market in their favor and good software on the way I don’t think Sony will make a come back in the states. DS installed base will eventually migrate.

Everyone has a DS, and will be more inclined to 3ds when compared to vita at the same price. Nintendo needs to get the games out so they’ll have a clear decision. If this pace continues, good night nintendo

    1. Well, what can I say? It’s my catch phrase. I gotta say it several times every day. Hey, if you don’t like it, you can always skip my replies. You won’t hurt my feelings at all, so no worries. Just sayin’, you can do whatever you want, broseph. It’s all you, man. It’s all you. 8]

  21. i’m not one bit interested in PS Vita, but i can’t speak for everyone. i find the vita to be just a PSP with new gimmicks, and that’s it. none of the games announced for it caught my interest; the 3DS games, on the other hand, i feel like buying quite a number of them.

    1. What in gods name do you think a 3DS is!?! A DS with new gimmicks. God you are so ignorant. While nintendo is rerunning n64 titles, Sony is porting ps3 titles and new ones as well with hardware that is way easier to develop games for. Keep your stupid resistive touch screens that are age old in technology. I’ll take my dual stick vita with many other ways to control a game

  22. Sure, the Vita may do better than 3DS at first, but the second a Pokemon game comes out for the 3DS, the Vita can kiss itself good-bye. Pokemon is a system seller.

    1. You are stupid, and a child if you think pokemon is a system seller. That died years ago. Grow a set of nuts and quit playing stupid childish games you mamas boy

      1. This is embarrassing to read… Lol its crazy I’ve been looking at old comments and it’s funny how long Nintendo has been doomed

  23. i’m a die hard nintendo fan but the psvita looks alot sexier than the 3ds….but the 3ds has the games that “I” like to play….but if sony delivers the games, something the failed at with the psp, it can be sexy all it wants but it won’t be too appealing…but if the do bring the games psvita will do well….but we all know nintendo is a familiar name in handheld gaming which gives them a bit of an edge…hopefully ninty sees a bit of competition…they need a little fire under their butts lol

  24. On christmas, when the Vita will be released, the 3DS will have a HUGE catalogue of great games, and lots of first party gems like Mario and Zelda, while the VITA will only have some games (in a catalogue which so far has only caught my attention with uncharted)…with this I’m not saying the VITA sales will be bad, cause you and me know that isn’t true, but the 3DS certainly won’t fall back…remember, the games makes the console, not the other way around.

  25. touch screen hmmm very original i’ve gotta hand it to sony for always having such original ideals NOT!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Come on now.. its nintendo when have they ever fail??? Plus the best game are made by nintendo :) and the psv will do ok, but its not gonna hurl nintedo at all.. and I take that back nintendo is failing rite now for not bringing them 3 rpg game to NOA >:/

  27. PS Vita will be better than the ds will ever be because ds sucks you need a pen to use the touch screen and the 3d is crappy and the psp has better graphics so screw all u and wii can kiss my ass its called move or kinect

    1. Another dumbass Lol this is great I hope other people appreciate this… I’ll be doing this with the wii u too, and for those that don’t think so please leave a comment, preferably one that will make you look like a complete ass later, make sure to also call me names and insult my intelligence… You know sweeten the pot ;)

  28. Well first off portables are a waste of time and money so I won’t bother with any of them. As for the PU i believe its gonna fail big time. Sorry nintendo but but since the N64 you been dead to me. I’ll think i will stick with the only two real gaming systems for the rest of this generation as for nxt generation I think i’ll do the same thing get whatever microsoft & sony comes and have the best of both worlds. why don’t you just quit making consoles nintendo and just make games and put them on both the Sony & Microsoft systems.

  29. Lest you forget, this guy is wrong 80 to 90% of the time. And by wrong I mean drastically, hilariously wrong. Embarrassingly (for him) wrong, even.

    1. Two years into the future people forgot Lol that’s what brought me here, I gonna start telling Nintendo haters to start looking back to these articles, you’ve been hating for a while now… And you’re still wrong.

  30. Casual gaming is and old excuse, I had a Gb Color, Advance and a DS…I’m a portable gamer, and if I have the chance to play a hardcore game on a portable system I’d certainly like the idea and you all would too, because your(our) beloved Zelda OOT and Majora’s Mask are not casual games at all, and metroid games neither. Also DS had a lot of RPGs (again..not casual games.)

The problem is, Nintendo only cares about Mario and Zelda, I like them too but I can’t take remakes anymore and paying for them again is not a big deal. Really.

  31. I’m planning to buy a Sony PS Vita but someone told me that there are two options in buying it.

I could buy the PS Vita with Wifi only or I could buy it with 3G and wifi.

What is 3G and will it be worth it if I buy it with 3G?

  32. Anybody who dares to talk down to Nintendo and imply they will fail may as well be sucking a big black dick in public. That is how we see you. Use your fuckin brain. Nintendo wins. Don’t need to be a fan for that to be a fact.
