Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo President Says Wii U Is 3D Capable

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told the Mercury News that it is possible for the Wii U to output 3D provided you have a 3D TV. He also stated that it’s not something Nintendo are really focusing on due primarily to the slow uptake of 3D TV sets. But if you’re fortunate enough to have a 3D TV then inevitably some of the games on Wii U will take advantage of this.

“If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that’s not the area we are focusing on.”

“… When it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we’d like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it.”

      1. Well they DID have a point back then. Graphics don’t mean everything for one and two, most HD games I see rely too much on gritty “realistic” visuals that paint everything in the color brown or gray. It’s really hard to sell me on HD being this big thing when the majority of the stuff using it doesn’t look all that great.

I’m not saying HD sucks, I’m just saying, does it really matter? I’m under the impression Nintendo only made the WiiU HD because of a case of “Sure why not?” rather than simply “doing what everyone else is.”

        1. While true, the main example of “They did have a point back then” was the fact that not everyone had an HD tv until two to three years down the road. Many PS3/360 owners were playing on normal tvs for quite some time (even including me). Once the price of HD tvs dropped, we all got on that board.

3D tvs are dropping in price by a large amount to the point where they’re extremely affordable: Yet still barely much actually own one due to the fact that not many are sure that they’d want to replace their current tvs over a strange gimmick that apparently only make sports shows more immersive.

So… yeah, it is smart to play it safe for another generation.
Once 3D tvs pick up, Nintendo will once again go “Sure why not?”.
Why force players to buy new tvs when you can please everyone?

  1. Nintendo has had 3D since the Gamecube; it would be a surprise (especially since the release of the 3DS) if the WiiU DIDN’T have 3D.

  2. Unlike HD, however, they’ve made 3D a possibility just in case 3D does pick up. Way to think ahead, N-dogs

    1. Just like with the 3DS they put in AR just in case it picks up…ya gotta love Nintendo sometimes, no fanboy-ness

  3. May as well make it capable. 3D TVs are coming down in price as like HD ones are cheaper. Got to look to the future.

  4. Well that’s cool, too bad I won’t be getting a 3D TV any time soon. It is sort of weird that this is happening though since Nintendo bashed the glasses so much at E3 2010 XD

    1. if ninty had their way i’m sure 3d would be glasses free lol but most 3dtvs come with glasses…so if there are 3d games compatible with the 3dtv you’d have to wear said glasses

  6. Honestly I thought 3d gaming was just a stupid gimmick until I bought a 3ds and since then I have been wanting to purchase a 3d tv IMO 3d adds alot to the experience

  8. I think that’s a smart move. To include it, but not focus on it.

I don’t think the 3D TVs with 3D glasses will ever catch on, but I will say it’s possible, for 3D TV to rise ever since I saw LG’s autostereoscopic 3D TV revealed at CES 2011 and they’ve said they’re working on widening the viewing angle range of the 3D and making it adjustable to 2D. That could easily change some minds about 3D TV.

I think some people would be interested in it “auto-3D TVs” just for the futuristic factor alone. And then Nintendo would look like a genius for deciding to support it on Wii U–just in case.
