Nintendo DS: Nintendo DS Continues To Outsell Nintendo 3DS

The recent sales figures from NPD show quite clearly that the Nintendo DS is still continuing to outsell its successor, the Nintendo 3DS. The figures show that in June Nintendo sold 386,000 Nintendo DS systems compared to 143,000 Nintendo 3DS systems. However it should be noted that the Nintendo 3DS received a massive sales boost at the end of the month due to the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

  1. You know, it’s great to know that the Nintendo DS is still selling, but I think it’s time for that system to ride off in the sunset with the near 150 million units sold, and Nintendo needs focus all of their attention on the 3DS, right now.

  2. Poeple are buying the ds because it is cheaper and they dont want to wait for 3ds games; it makes sense, i dont want to get a 3ds untill theres more games for it out there- and especially not until filpnote memo is released!

    1. That makes sense in theory, but keep in mind that the Wii is under 5 years old and has seen a few price drops, as have the DSi and DSi XL. I know a couple of systems like the PS2 have managed this super-long lifespan that could warrant such “Why buy next gen?” thoughts, but for the most part it comes down to where the console/handheld development scene is cranking things out. 3DS hasn’t exactly gotten off on the best foot, sure, but we all know there are some quality titles here and more on the way. That’s why we’re even here (unless you’re trolling, in which case…I won’t even dignify that with a response).

Combine that with a relatively weak advertising campaign (aside from OoT and a couple other exceptions) where some people don’t even know the 3DS exists and people who waited until the end of the system’s lifespan, and you’re bound to have the older handheld selling.

Hopefully this holiday Nintendo turns things around and puts the numbers where they belong.

  3. Games to play on the 3DS: Street Fighter IV 3D version, Ocarina of Time 3D
Recent games to play on the DS: Pokemon Heart Gold, Pokemon White, Solatorobo, Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and soon to come, Kirby Mass Attack and Professor Layton.

The I haven’t even bought a 3DS yet. I’m waiting for Kid Icarus Uprising and Super Mario 3D to be released.

    1. Yes. The ds’s low price gave it another huge advantage over the psp. Now that ps vita costs the same, and admittingly has alot of better features and games, nintendo will drop the price to atleast $200.

  4. this isnt really a suprise…..the gb outsold the gba its first year as did the gba outsold the ds the first year the ps2 outsold the ps3 the first year this is how it works when a a new console or handheld comes out for the most part with few exceptions being the ps2 and the wii although the ps still sold over a million the first year of the ps2

  5. que vengan juegos para ds no tendrian por qué elevar las ventas de dicha consola. si la gente fuese un poco más inteligente, invertiría en una 3DS, donde podrá jugar sus queridos juegos de DS y lo nuevo que venga para 3DS

  6. Only a few companies are taking the 3DS serious and making GOOD QUALITY GAMES…. Ubisoft I’m looking at you

  8. Its because parents are like, “Their both DS’s but this one is cheaper so I’ll get this one.” I wish Nintendo would stop making DSi and focus on 3ds, its time to move on. But then again, its a corporation and they’ll keep making it if it makes money.

  9. I think the 3DS came too early & the Wii U will too. Believe me, the Wii U won’t sell at all, I still have a lot of Wii games to buy & try & I still want to try it even more.

I feel that the Wii had a short live with very few good games, most of them came last year & I haven’t been able to buy them, since they release Wii Sports with the console it was like a demo to show of the amazing motion controls, when I got it in 2007 I was shocked, but after that demo I wanted some hardcore AAA games that were serious, like a game who makes me feel I’m shooting a gun to zombies or I’m holding a sword or I’m running or really in a baseball game. Since Wii Sports success I think Nintendo stayed in that demo scene with Wii fit & Wii Sports Resort, & thought Nintendo was going to make a more mature & serious sport game after that or more serious games. Only a few have made me feel the true purpose of the Wii like Metroid & Mario Kart Wii. & I think this Zelda is the last one.

But my point is, when I got a Wii I thought of these increible idead & opportunities & I haven’t seen them, same as with the DS. Good games, but not enough, there could have been at leas 15 AAA in each console, more than we have now. Look just how we still need the Op Rainfall games. People are hungry for Wii games, for a console they promised us stuff since 2007 & some things haven’t arrived.

So I think the 3DS came too early & the Wii U will too.

Look how the DSi XL promised a new way of seeing things & a year after we got 3DS, so we never saw MAJOR games for the DSi or DSi XL ONLY that used the cameras & new features & stuff since producers were rushed to now to games for the 3DS. & thsoe rushed games were the ones for the opening of the 3DS & they were not good…

Only Smash Bros. & a VERY GOOD Metroid Prime & VERY GOOD Mario Kart game will save the 3DS & many new IPs, we need those.

Sorry for the long comment, been wanting to tell this for a long time. :p

  10. 3DS Money Leech=$250

overpriced underpowered, eye/brain damaging, small screen, backwards compatible only with DS games, battery killer, region locked, few features, NO Youtube videos, Only plays clips & trailers, very long wait for only one somewhat decent game, ultra long wait to get a complete game catalog list, jaggy/pixelated/ghosting, only one-sided 3D & was rushed for fast money = many design flaws, like permanently scratching screen, black screen of death and D-pad cracking easily. Nintendo is refusing to acknowledge this common problem amongst many consumers + refuse to give money back or even at the very least, fix the problem.

Add that with having to fork over $40-50 per every game just because it includes pixelated 3D; Games you can get way cheaper, minus eye/brain damage 3D effects on other systems.

Sims 3(D) $40: smaller screen with jaggy pixelated garbage graphics & less memory = less stuff/less to experience & enjoy
    vs.
Sims3 on any other system $14-19: better graphics on a bigger screen to fully appreciate & more memory = more to buy/more places/better

Iwata once admitted to overpricing the Wii because Gamecube failed to capture peoples’ attention, due to being cheap plastic garbage with virtually nothing good to offer. So when he released the Wii, he purposely overpriced it beyond its true worth to capture peoples’ attention and make them think Wii would be different.

    Rinse & Repeat: 3DS

Everyone thought Vita would have a price tag of at least $600 due to so many features it included, more than 3DS, but it’s also $250 further proving 3DS is overpriced garbage.

    PSP Vita $250 +(TRUE VALUE)+

More battery life, OLED, 3G, more multimedia/features/apps., NO region lock, can watch YouTube videos, Backwards compatibility with ALL PSP games, can port PS3 games, bigger screen, can download Books/movies/mangas + more, Gyroscope, Bluetooth®, Two analog sticks for better controlling for both Left and Right handed people, GPS, two multi-touch pads you can use to play games instead of just scrolling menu only, better graphics/picture/color/sound/resolution, can let you textchat or voicechat whilst playing any online game or browsing Internet, Motion sensing, more powerful processor, faster connection + much more.

Will also include a full video tutorial installed on how to use all PSV’s features whilst Satoru Iwata is calling public/ex buyers stupid because they don’t know how to use 3DS “IT’S HARDLY ROCKET SCIENCE” + he blames them for 3DS selling poorly as well, like a true professional of his class.

All that for same price. IT’S HARDLY ROCKET SCIENCE to not see where the true value lies.

    1. LOL! U mad? 3DS brain damage? The 3DS is amazing, the battery IS a flaw, but the design is cool & cool games are coming. So, most of what u said is dumb, & the price, well, it’s 3D, of course the price had to be higher.

  11. Honestly, if I had no DS right now, I would buy the 3DS. You get more for your money, even if you do not use the 3D features. There is still plenty to do on it.

  12. I agree 3ds is garbadge. It has nothing good to offer & is too overpriced. $250 + $40-50 per game = $1,500 and up. I’d rather get a Vita an iPhone or a damn home console at least those can support full videos and Youtube at cheaper price. have more to offer & don’t hurt ur eyes or brain.

I tried it out (did not buy) & it hurt my eyes & my head felt like it was going to implode. and its stupid because the 3d doesnt even work right. like when try to play a driving game i crashed all the time, but didnt when i turned off 3d. when was shooting enemies it shot the wrong way. I cant even relax & play it laying down becuz the stupid 3d effects are one sided.

I’m so glad i did not buy it. if i want to play zelda or starfox i will use vc, thank u very much.

all my friends at school said 3ds is gay and stupid & they wanted vita. i agree 3ds not worth it.

    1. U buy the 3DS to play Zelda, Mario, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Kart, first Smash Bros. in handheld, Star Fox, Metroid, Kirby, Kid Icarus & all in 3D. Not to watch YouTube, that’s why I have my laptop, to see the vids in a decent size, & that’s why I have my phone, to receive & do phone calls. :) The 3DS is for VIDEO GAMES in 3D. People these days now want a watch to DO EVERYTHING, even dinner…

  13. Nintendo is making a smart move by keeping the DS active while letting the 3DS library build. It will keep the money coming in and lay the footwork for the 3DS to become the dominant one.

  14. YEA I AGREE. WHY BUY A SINGLE CONSOLE THAT INCLUDES EVERYTHING & CHEAPER?

UR SO STUPIT. IF I WANT A GPS, I WILL BUY ONE SEPETATELY FOR $150. IF I WANT TO WATCH UTUBE VIDEOS, ILL JUST BUY A SEPERATE LAPTOP FOR $1,200. IF I WANT SOMETHING THAT CAN DOWNLOAD MUSIC, ILL BUY YET ANOTHER SEPERATELY FOR $180 MORE. IF I WANT 3G OR BLUETOOTH I CAN ALSO JUST BUY IT SEPERATELY FOR ANOTHER $300. IF I WANT A BOOK DOWNLODER I BUY FOR $300

    BECAUSE THAT IS TRUE VALUE!

I LIKE CARRYING ALL OF THAT STUFF WITH ME WHEN I TRAVEL, ITS CONVINEINT. I CAN HAVE LAPTOP IN MY HAND, GPS IN MY OTHER HAND, MUSIC PLAYER IN MY MOUTH, BOOK DOWNLOADING READER ON MY FOOT, LAPTOP IN MY OTHER FOOT, BLUETOOTH IN MY ASS.

U NEED TO LEARN WHAT TRUE VALUE IS, BOY!

  15. It’s only been a few months since its launch. It will pick up eventually when more quality game come out for it.

  16. i really hope wii u isn’t just another wii
[although the “Wii” part kinda gave that away]
becuz wii sucked IMHO it had a few games worth playing like SSBB, MG2 and new skyward sword
[which i’m willing to bet they’ll release it 1st on Wii U & make Wii users wait a whole month to get, just like they did with twilight princess, which they announced 1st for GC users & then released it for Wii 1st instead just to sell Wii. & made GC users wait a little over a month.]
Warioware was dumb, kirbys epic yarn was dumb, metriod other M was dumb, Mickeys epic paint was dumb.

I hope Wii U will be better & not another let-down disapointment. :(

    *crosses fingers* >_<
