Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Could Be Working On A ‘Massively Single-Player’ Animal Crossing Online

Nintendo has applied for a patent for a “massively single-player” game. Though no specific game is mentioned, the blurb for the patent indicates similarities to an online version of Animal Crossing. The game would be played in single player mode, but actions from other players playing the same game would filter through into your game via the Internet.

An example given had one player spotting a pile of building materials in a virtual world and making a house out of it. Since the world is the same, the next player to happen along finds not a heap of lumber and tools, but a finished house (with the builder nowhere to be seen). Additionally, Nintendo’s filing suggested that one player could gossip to a non-player character in the world, who would then pass it along to other players.

“Those who want to play games that are more dynamic, not-based on Al and not-pre-scripted like multiplayer games, however, don’t want to ‘deal’ with other people, appreciate the privacy it provides.”

    1. I would LOVE a Pokemon MMO. Always felt there should’ve been an official one years ago…2004 or prior actually. The series as a whole has so many lands and gyms/potential gyms. They could use the ones from R/B/Y to Black/White and it would be massive. They wouldn’t even need to include the lands from the Ranger games.

      1. Isn’t the Dream World sort of like an MMO? Only without the player interaction and stuff? If they pull off something amazing with the Dream World, it would be fantastic.

    1. It appeals to a different audience – for one, parents with kids who would otherwise be vulnerable to abuse online. Animal crossing has a good reputation for being kid friendly – not many games can say that.

    2. Local multiplayer sounds limited in comparison too. :P Single player games sound limited too.

      But honestly, restriction breeds creativity.
MMOs are overhyped to be the greatest genre games in the world on the internet, the funniest thing is: I’ve seen people playing local multiplayer games and single player games have MORE FUN than any guild I’ve seen online.

That’s not to say I don’t like MMOs… I do have some MMOs I absolutely love, but I will admit I’ve had more fun with non-MMO games.

But anyways: It’s great to have an MSO Animal Crossing… to have an MMO would mean to have everyone stealing your town’s fruit, taking all the good furniture in the morning, and depreciating the value of the entire town experience with a bunch of net trollers who ruin the entire game. :P And even your “online friends” can ruin it for ya’.

  1. That’s a step in the right direction Nintendo, but how about applying this idea to a massively multiplayer Pokemon game.

    1. The game described is nothing like Minecraft.

Though Minecraft on WiiU would be amazing, since the tablet controller would be perfect for the inventory!

Also, I want Minecraft on the 3DS

      1. Yea, i just saw the words “building materials”materials” “lumber” and tools and minecraft directly popped up in my head :p

  2. This is essentially Spore.
Spore was where you made your own buildings and creatures and stuff, and your friends did too. But if you were friends with another person, their creations appear in your game.

  3. I thought it was mmo but that would be Kool. It would also be better to have the option to interact with other players.

    1. It should be. The Pokemon franchise (hands down without a doubt) and the Mario series of RPGs (Super Star Saga, SMRPG, the first two Paper Marios), and Zelda (which has always had a world that could’ve been expanded on) have worlds that would be great for MMORPGs–something where you can explore and whatnot.

I would take Zelda as a western RPG-style game where the map is made much bigger than and the world much more livelier. Link’s adventures could be so much more grand than traveling across largely empty fields to sparse village and mucking about dungeons.

If Nintendo is feeling on the lazy side they could take KFC’s Famous Bowls idea and just lump everything together in a Super Smash MMO. XD
If Nintendo is feeling a bit on the lazy side they could go with

    1. Oh but it is, just not to you. Animal crossing has huge following for a reason. Difrent strokes. If I told you Pokemon was a load of cods, what would you say? It is in my opinion but that’s the point, opinions differ ;)

    2. Animal Crossing is a fun game, for the year or so. But then it gets boring and stale. You can only work towards paying off your house inch-by-inch for little reward so long before you realize that you can do that in the real world.

Also, each new addition is barely different from the last; making it not a very good investment.

However, a MMO animal crossing would be awesome and is what I hoped the series would turn into.

  4. wait, isn’t that, somewhat what occurs now? i mean, with the exception of building your own house(literally building it), you can tell different AI characters info or give them catch phrases, then once you visit someone else’s town, THAT character’s info is stored onto their game & possibly will move INTO that residence in the future. Then, they essentially will ask the new person if they heard of you, might start off repeating your given catchphrase & so forth. i mean, i am assuming it’ll be more detailed & specific but, as an AC player, i am slightly confused why, with the exception of being a single player game, this is “big news”. though, don’t get me wrong, any AC news is semi-important to me.
AND ON THAT NOTE…GIMME AC:3D… *to quote the song* i wanna “run this town tonight!! ayyyy ayyy ay ay ayyyyy!”

  5. That’s kinda cool, it’s like you’re playing a typical single player game, but instead of the game already been made by the developers, the game is being made by other people. So you might not ever be playing the same game every time you turn it on.

  6. I don’t have friends that really play video games so I’ve never had a chance to go to other towns or vice versa. And I’ve never gotten friend codes online (cuz you never know who you’ll find.) This sounds pretty interesting though.

  7. “had one player spotting a pile of building materials in a virtual world and making a house out of it” Minecraft-ish?

  8. Sad nintendo, you still don’t get that video games are more social than ever before, yet you refuse to admit it and would rather make games like this.

Also way to keep out the full article.
Gamespot didnt. Was a good read to see why they don’t want to make any good online games.

    1. Dude this is just one game, calm your nerves. You makes it seem as if Nintendo is gonna make all online games like this. If that’s the case they wouldn’t be working so hard to improve online.

      1. The problem is nintendo treats their gamers like a cautious Parent treats their child. That’s all well and good but now that nintendo is pushing for more adult gamers (with games like darksiders 2, and ghost recon) they have to loosen up.

They need to stop doing what they feel is best and start doing what people want.

        1. They should make more adult oriented games. What I think is goin on is that Nintendo is putting out the casual while letting the third parties handle the hard core. It would be nice to have a hard core title exclusively made by Nintendo themselves so I see where your coming from.

          1. I think Metroid for Wii U will be very hardcore, and Zelda for Wii U COULD be incredibly hardcore. But yeah they should make new characters and games to add a Mature only series to their collection

  10. Why is Tom Nook’s head cut off?

On the subject, I don’t know why they wouldn’t want multiplayer? You know, interact, trade in real time, play mini games.

    1. Exactly what I’m saying. That’s the point of an MMO. To play online with a massive amount of people.

      1. But it’s not an MMO; it’s an MSO. The point is to play online with a single player 0_o

I really don’t understand their logic behind this.

  11. i hope they expand on Animal crossings online,i want to be able to make my town open to strangers, freinds or no one at all,and haveing preset rules and limitations would be nice, say you had strangers comeing to your town you can make trees not shakeable etc.i would also like a free market where many people can go to sell their stuff, also have an even bigger catalouge then previous animal crossing games would be awsome, also 25 people in town or more would be awsome,i also think there should be cars and mini games in it,last of all you should be able to upgrade your house into a mansion or have multiple houses,i have way to many ideas, really want to see this game

  12. I don’t think this this patent is referring to ‘animal crossing.’ It could be used, but I was imagining something for the Wii U online environment. They already said that they didn’t want to be like their competitor in regards to the online infrastructure. (i.e PSN XBL). I’m sort of imagining a sort of online Mii game built in to the Wii U where everything is open world sandbox.

  15. So it’s like being social but not really? So who experiences the changes to your land/world? Must just be friends because other people can’t interact with you, right?
