Nintendo: Harvest Moon Won’t Be Coming To HD Consoles Such As Wii U Anytime Soon

Marvelous director of digital content Toshinori Aoki has told online gaming publication Siliconera that the company has no plans to move the Harvest Moon franchise over to HD consoles such as Wii U, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Aoki believes that it’s not the right thing to do as they don’t want the fans of the franchise to have to purchase new consoles.

“The game has a large fanbase of both male and female gamers. I’m not sure if one is larger than the other, but we know it is a title female gamers cherish. And we really appreciate that. In the future we will release Harvest Moon on platforms we believe it will sell well, but right now we think female gamers don’t favor a HD version as much as they do with having fun wiht the series.”

“Right now we’re making The Tale of Two Towns for 3DS with Natsume. It’s not that we’re against bringing Harvest Moon to Wii U, PS3, or Xbox 360. It’s just that this is a series where we are thankful for fans and we don’t want to force them to buy a new system.”

“We want to bring it to where the fans are. Up until now, we felt the fans were on the DS and we think that a lot of those fans have gotten a 3DS. So, we want to bring it on those platforms first before we start planning bringing the series to another console. It’s not that we’re not thinking about it, but right now we are focused on working on The Tale of Two Towns for the 3DS.”

  1. what a massive load of guff ‘female gamers don’t favor a HD’??? random comment of the year award. Harvest Moon on 360 would be sweet i’d love unlocking Harvest Moon achievements. roll on 3DS release i guess.

    1. You want it on the 360 just for achievements?

It’s truly a sad sign of the times; achievements have turned gamers into mindless drones. Spoiler alert: Achievements don’t actually do anything other than show your lack of self-confidence and need for affirmation.

      1. He never said that was the only reason he wanted it on the 360. And your little rant on achievements is just a silly statement.

        1. I would also love to unlock achievements for Harvest Moon! Sure they don’t do anything but it’s the challenge and being able to set a new goal for yourself while playing the game. I’d get the full 1000 score just to show I was a true fan of the series.

    2. Not force use to buy a new system? I own the Wii and a PS3. I don’t own any handheld game systems. I will buy a Wii U when a Harvest Moon or a Rune Factory come out on it and it will be worth every penny just to play those games on it! Please, please, please reconsider because you will never get me to buy a handheld device just to play your games. If you want my money then make more game for the bigger console systems like the Wii.

  2. Not coming to HD, anytime soon? If you ask me, looks like Natsume doesn’t want to try and expand on the Harvest Moon franchise by trying to innovate the newer games and make it look a bit prettier than it already is. I can see the Wii U’s controller can be used for a variety of things in the game if Natsume agrees to bring the newer games to the Wii U. To be honest, it seems that they are best on handhelds if they don’t intend to bring anymore console games in the future.

  3. That is a smart thing. Harvest Moon doesn’t need HD graphics right now. I love the old style graphics like Back To Nature and N64. Harvest Moon is more about characters with personality and growing crops. The Nintendo DS and 3DS would be the best bet right now since most of the Harvest Moon games are on the portable systems.

  4. i feel like if harvest moon was on xbox 360, it would have some seriously easy achievements.

buy a cow, get the horse, harvest a watermelon, grow a fruit tree, milk a cow, get married, get (person) to max friendship, buy a toy for your child.

good god if “a wonderful life” was on xbox 360, i would’ve 1000G’d that in no time!

    1. ya im hopin for a lot of things. yoshi, fire emblem, ace attorney, contra, castlevania, majoras mask, i hope its all true. i also hope the second anolog add on gets big and brings more fps games to the 3ds, and that games like conduit and (hopefully) metroid prime utilize it. i would definatley buy a 3ds lite with two joysticks as long as their more games that use it. ive also never played professor layton, but i really hope the ace attorney mash up comes out in america along with mask of miracle. if everything goes right the 3ds will have a lot of killer games in the not so distant future. now all we need is a new pokemon game and to get metroid and kirby onto the 3ds and this may become my favorite nintendo console. oh ya and a 3ds original zelda game and a 2d mario. i know i want alot but all these game would RULE!

    1. I think so too. I just don’t think many PS3 and 360 owners would buy Harvest Moon. HM is a laidback game and doesn’t need great graphics or anything like that. I love Harvest Moon and would love to see a title on Wii U, since I will be buying it, but it won’t sell as many copies as it would if it was on DS.

  5. This comment is unrelated, but does anyone else think it’s a good idea for Nintendo to sign an exclusivity deal with Namco to bring their Tales series to Wii U and 3DS. Imo that could be an effective counter to the Final Fantasy series on the Playstation console (of course if Nintendo could convince Square Enix to bring the next installment of the FF series to the Wii U, I’d be on board for that too.)

    So, what do you think?

  6. What? Female gamers are bothered about HD gaming apparently. In my reaction HD will make Pikmin graphics way better and sharper. Similar thing happened with Super smash bros, they announce it then say it’s coming in several years or not soon. Why!?

BTW: Sorry for the person who made the article or quote but I spotted a minor Typo in first paragraph quote towards the end, they said wiht. Never mind :/

    1. I believe Girls and boys want HD. Why are they saying Girls are not excited for HD? HD would make harvest moon way better. Imagine Pikmin in HD.

Harvest moon creators remember Girls want HD as much as boys :l

    2. IKR?????!! i REALLY REALLY REALLY want it to be on PS3 cause i don’t have a WII :I plus i loved playing it on the PS2 till our PS2 dissappaered -.-huh…

  7. That’s ridiculous, if a fan can afford to buy a new system to play your game, what’s wrong with that? Also, by introducing it to more systems you’ll get new fans that don’t have a DS to play your current games on…

    1. I’m pretty sure plenty would have a DS, there’s like 145 million sold, making it the second-best selling system in history. Besides, I can see why they’re not bringing it to the HD systems as there games are usually on portables anyways and that’s where most of their demograph is so they don’t feel like forcing that demograph to buy a system they most likely wouldn’t have.

  8. How about making ports for HD consoles and for current systems suchs as the DS, Wii, and 3DS? If I’m not mistaken, Tale of Two Towns is for the DS and 3DS. That way, they can help people make a much smoother transition. Sooner or later, people will buy the HD/new consoles.

  9. They should try broadening their audience, instead of confining it. I know a lot of people would probably appreciate an HD game on PS3/XBox 360. Those are lacking HM games, spare the PSOne classic and Rune Factory, which is quite different from traditional HM games.

They really need to hurry up with that HM 3DS game though, we’re all sick of waiting!

  10. There are all kinds of things wrong with the statement quoted in the article, but two things worry me most about this line of thought:

    1. but right now we think female gamers don’t favor a HD version

Extremely… well, possibly sexist argument here, and seems to basically be stereotyping female gamers. It also holds two completely seperate points in contrast to each other, you don’t choose ‘HD’ OR ‘fun’, you ideally have both.

    2. It’s just that this is a series where we are thankful for fans and we don’t want to force them to buy a new system.

This is a good argument from a third party view, awfully annoying one from Nintendo’s view or the view of promoting a games console. It’s pretty much saying ‘we won’t publish our game on your system until people who like our series have bought one’, when ideally you need the games as a hook to make people buy the system. So while it makes some sort of sense, it seems like they’re assuming that people will buy systems without games, and that somewhere along the line, people will magically transition to owning the newer consoles.

Not sure how relevant this is in this case (because of Harvest Moon’s popularity as a series), but if other third parties think the same way, it might conveniantly explain why so many consoles fall down flat and tend to not to take off too quickly.

  11. his comment, yeah, sounds pretty sexist. But he is right about Harvest Moon, not “needing HD”. It doesn’t, simply put. Although it’d probably be a nice game, a Harvest Moon on 360 or PS3 would not be appreciated by it’s general audiences (“hardcore” gamers, god damn do I hate that word.) With Harvest Moon being focused on the DS family, it can probably mean that the Devs can focus on an easy sells to their demographic which is already established, and focus on features and gameplay on the software itself. And anyways, from what I recall, the last console that received a Harvest Moon game was the gamecube.

  12. I think most of the Japan games companies are based on their own country to make the conclusion. A lot of them still believe female gamers are not serious gamers/just casual gamers and females only buy console that looks ‘simple’, even the games – puzzle/mini games etc (no offense here).

Whether this is a stereotype/pigeonholing of thinking is up to the gamers to decide. As for me I don’t play Harvest Moon that much so it didn’t really bother me but still a bit of annoying that they always see female gamers lightly when come to gaming (plus a lot of things -_-|||).

But I rather think this as one of their own way of strategy to popular up their games. Until now, I still have high hope(s) for Wii U to be successfully released by big N. Poor N for all the bad rumors.

P/S Actually me enjoy playing GOW too and Zelda is my favorite (Wrong post :P).

  14. Are you for real, Marvelous? Girls don’t prefer an HD version? Maybe instead of thinking and assuming you’re right about what your fans want, you should actually ask us what we prefer. It might actually please us, and might even convince me to buy your games again. :/

  15. ME AND MY FRIEND WANT A NEW HHM GAME ON WII U!!!! Or wii. PLZZZZ! PLZ PLZ!!! And let us see the girl pregnant for once. Me and my friend want that. It makes it more real but cute. Also, Make the kids grow up like in the gamecube HHMS. I miss that. We want to see them grow and get familys. We have alot of ideas, we want to see them made!!!

  16. What a load of crap. I’m a female gamer who loves the harvest moon series and I prefer them on consoles instead of handhelds. I want better graphics and more plot and character development to it. All these recent ones feel so lacking and recycled it just takes the magic out of it.

  17. This should be out for the ps3, xbox 360…there could be so much more done with the game instead of constant grinding.. and most people have more than one console these days…

  18. oh and one more thing, by bringing it out on the nintendo 3ds your already making people buy new consoles ( just hand held ones),DUHHHHHH

  19. I feel like a lot of the fans have the newer consoles now too!!! And if they don’t, they could only get more fans! Blehhhhhhh >_______<

  20. As a girl gamer who cannot stand playing games like Harvest Moon on her DS, I understand avoiding the PS3 and 360 but all Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games put out on the wii have done VERY well, and while I own a couple for DS, I NEVER play them. I would rather run through the ones I have for the Wii over and over again than to bother with my DS. I also do not own a 3 DS nor do I ever plan on putting out that much money just so I can play a new harvest moon game, so to me this entire article was…BS I guess haha

  21. who cares put it on xbox/ps3 n leave the graphics the same cause its still a great game eaither way. i kno plenty of ppl who have it on ds n 3ds n they alll agree that it should hit platform plus most gamers have multi platforms. i have xbox ds 3ds a wii a ps1(with HM back to nature the best) n older systems. they r just gonna be loseing out on a bigger fan base n money of course

  22. I think this might have less to do with who is on what platform, as much as it is production costs, especially for HD. Let’s face it, HM is a niche market, and the cost for HD vs SD is quite a bit. They might not want to risk burning a lot of money on a game for Wii U and it not selling well, which could hurt HM overall. I think that’s pretty much what they said, but in a nicer, vague tone.

  23. NOOOOOO! Ive been playing harvest moon since I was little. I cant get enough but the recent wii games are a bit outdated. Honestly I the DS games are nothing compared to the the mainstream consoles. I moved on to Xbox 360 and was anticipating a harvest moon game. #disapointed

  24. As a female gamer, I can assure you that Harvest Moon on the Wii U would be outstanding. I have a DS and love the games, but I don’t have a 3DS. Got a Wii U for xmas and would love to play Harvest Moon in HD! I know there are Harvest Moon for Wii, so the interest isn’t that bad. If its cost, I can understand. Just come out and say it, though. Don’t be vague about it.

  25. This is absolutly the dumbest thing I have ever heard….making them switch to a new consol… I had to buy different systems just to play them already, super nintento-harvest moon, GBC-harvestmoon 2- GBA harvestmoon friends of mineral town, nintendo 64- harvestmoon 64, nintendo 3ds- harvest moon tale of new towns….. and I. Play my xbox more than any system I have ever played. I want a harvest moon for xbox because it would be bad ass, and I’m sick of buying your hand held consols, I want one for xbox…..

    1. See you just have to make it more realistic, keep everything in the game don’t change it but make it more mrpg. Enable online play with a lot of people make harvestmoon epic world or something…. make more dialog because it gets old, make more things to do etc, buff up the graphics, make more events, make add in more suprises, you can even make a difficulty level, just keep the main idea and expand off of it. The possibilities are limitless if you find someone with the right ideas………maaaake one now and don’t just make it for 12 year olds. Make flirting with girls fun, make your cows try and ram you if you slash em with you tools, add in different endings, add in cool stuff like the original where an event happens and a tree breaks and you find a secret place of gnomes but its more exciting (they don’t just say a few lame words and you leave feeling like really…that’s it..) I’ve been playing these games since forever. They are calming, they can be fun,….they can get repetitive… but if your having such a hard time team up with behtheesda who made skyrim make an online virtual world where you work hard and play hard… just make it already
