Nintendo: Nintendo To Post A Massive ¥100 Billion Loss In Financial Results Tomorrow?

Japan’s Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo is set to reveal a gargantuan pre-tax loss of ¥100 billion when the company reports its half-yearly financial results tomorrow. The loss itself is nearly double ¥55 billion loss predicted by Nintendo. If the paper is indeed correct then Nintendo would have made a loss of ¥74.5 billion in the last three months alone.

    1. Jaded (Heath Miller V)

To make money, you have to make sales.
To make sales you to release software with your hardware.

3DS is limping along. Once a few more heavy hitter titles are released, N should hopefully begin to recoup. WiiU will be critical as well obviously.

Hell, I can’t give nintendo money because I have nothing to buy. Just look at each week’s eShop lineup. Very little reason to buy a 3DS.

With any luck, things will pick up.

  1. This is what happens when you have massive cash reserves denominated in US dollars as the Yen appreciates dramatically. (In other words: this really has very little to do w/ their game business and everything to do w/ their money management business, something for which they’ve been criticized for well over a decade, that is, for keeping such a huge pile of cash and not investing it in acquisitions and other, core, areas of their primary business.)

    1. This is exactly what happened. Add to that the earthquake/tsunami earlier this year that has negatively affected every Japanese business and you get a clearer picture as to why the losses are so massive. All this makes me wonder if the big N is banking on Wii U to help recover some of these losses. That might explain one of the reasons as to why they’re releasing it mid-next year instead of at the holiday season like you would expect.

  2. Maybe a non mario racing game where there are real cars in it for wii u I think nintnendo needs a ridge racer style game just not copied

      1. DUDE! I’m just expressing my thoughts about how nintendo should focus on people who like racing games I mean really I like mkw and I like the mariokart series but nintendo should make a game like grand turismo but not completely similar don’t fucking insult me for just saying my opiniun

        1. We get that, but Mario Kart sells waaaaay more than any of those games ever would, maybe even combined. Though it would surely sell something…

    1. they should make a driving simulator with a italian name (like forza and gran turismo). and as DLC they can bring some mario karts just for fun.

  3. 100 billion Yen converts to just over a billion dollars US. A sizeable loss, but not catastrophic by any means. If it is true, Nintendo will undoubtedly bounce back.

  4. They have more than 100 billion even though that is a reasonable amount. I hope they can bounce back. That just means they’ll work harder as to not loose anymore money.

    1. Hmm what have they recycled other than the ds line, and look how many they’ve sold. Your comment has no info to support it. If they wiiU is price right, next year will be a 180 from this year.

    2. Heh, like every game company out today hasn’t been recycling, come on now bro seriously, Madden, CoD, Just Dance, CAPCOM fighting games and the list goes on. Also Skyward Sword will be farm from that, Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land will be great because they’ll bring something new, I guess you could say that about some of the other games I listed too.

  5. According to the original article, it is all because of the ‘rising yen versus the Euro will cause a 40 billion yen foreign currency exchange loss’. It is just the crappy credit crunch which no-one can do anything about. I wouldn’t be suprised if more Japanese companies reported losses such as this (thanks a lot Greece, Portugual and Ireland…)

  6. “The reason for the increase, according to Nikkei, is that the rising yen versus the Euro will cause a 40 billion yen foreign currency exchange loss.” READ THE ARTICLE FIRST BEFORE COMMENTING

    1. Tbf you can’t blame the commenters, sickr should have made that clear, if they need to read the original article to get the details he’s not doing a very good job.

  7. i can only say, its due to the lack of games that motivate people to buy consoles. the wii was their biggest money maker outside of the DS, but once they announced the Wii U, they dropped it like a hot potato, especially in the states.

and these 3DS games take too goddamn long to make, if there were more nintendo published games on 3DS and Wii, there wouldn’t be much of an issue. i think nintendo needs to try what sony does, make other products. if this article were on a 1B yen loss for sony, we’d all laugh cuz thats chump change to them.

i’ve been saying this for a while, they needed to pull their heads out of their asses or its gonna catch up to them. and it did.

    1. Im a huge nintendo fan, but honestly, he is correct. Nintendo’s on top, and they wont stay there if they dont listen to their fans.

  8. THAT PROVEZZ THAT NINTENDO WILL STOP MAKING CONSULES BECUS THEY SUCK AND TEHY LOSE MONY, FUCK GAY NINTENDO BECUS WEN IT STOPS MAKING CONSULES WIL STOP MAKING MERIO AND ZELDA AND FINALY AL PEOPLE WILL SE THAT PS3 IS THE BESTTTT!!!!1111

    1. Lawl, 12 year olds are so close-minded these days. Remember the days when people didn’t say “Oh this console is better” and just played all games, regardless of platform, because it’s about having fun? Yeah, brats like this should gtfo~

      1. I miss those days :(

No one in my neighborhood ever screamed “my sega is better than your nintendo!” cause both were awesome. And People back then actually liked variety… now it’s just “go die everyone else’s system except for my favorite system!”

    2. Ninyendo is stryggling recently with consoles as they are catching up with current tech next year. The Wii U will work if all the 3rd party are joining. The graphics are better then PS3 as of Sega said. The cool game features are coming. unless you are a timetravel, you don’t know the future. Wait and see Nintendo blowing people away with Wii U

  9. Nothing to worry about….what did you expect. Think how much money they’re spending on Research & Development for the WiiU. Theyre advertising the new games coming up. They had to take a price cut on the 3DS. This is all in the last six months, thats alot of spending. In four months after the holidays, I bet we’ll see an article how Nintendo had a much bigger holiday than predicted and make that money back!

  10. I just gotta say, I absolutely LOVE this site. I visit it every day. I used to check in over at Gonintendo and IGN for my Nintendo news but no longer.

I only come here now becuase you post only important articles, not a bunch of worthless crap that isn’t worth reading.

  12. i own a ps3 and i like there first party games there awesome but nintendo been the king for far to long to lose the battle now everybody talk shit about them but i bet u everybody that talk shit about nintendo got to own a nes,snes,n64,gc, or a wii they talk shit bout nintendo but dont realize nintendo make classic games i could ask anybody about mario and zelda and everybody knows it but ask somebody about kratos or nathan drake and they look at u stupid… the point is they talk shit about nintendo but they know dat back in the day they use to be hook on nintendo dick i play all the systems so i could careless wat anybody thinks im buying a wii u when it first release just like ill buy a ps4 or the next xbox when they release cause im a gamer and i like to play games… so just stop talking shit and let ppl play wat they want im tired of people talking shit about consoles there just made to be played not to make war about wat system is better everybody buys wat ever system they feel comfortable playing

  13. Nintendo’s game philosophy bites right into their business philosophy. They’re a very proud company who contain themselves on the products of their OWN creation, rather than invest in third-party ideas. Business wise, instead of investing capital outside of their own market, they’ve just spun a pool of their own money at the mercy of global inflation.

  14. hmm, Nintendo been earning 4 times this quantity since 2006, thinking that this will take the company down is stupid.

Did you know that the company reported sales in the 2008 fiscal year of ¥1.67 trillion (about $16 billion). Yep, 16 times this miserable quantity, what is more epic is that Nintendo owned 32% of the whole gaming market O_o…. Nintendo never owned so much since the NES era in 2008, of course 2008 onward the Wii hype when done, but hopefully the Wii U will bring it back. So don’t fear this small lost, but be happy, since Nintendo work harder when they are at lost(well all companies do).

Also I agree with you ECM, Nintendo is a company that rarely invest his money, I believe the last studio Nintendo bough was Retro studio and the one that created Xenoblade that was back in 2000.. come on Nintendo!! I would love to see Rare back with you, they want to do Killer Instinct 3!!!

      1. Rare has gone downhill so much when there with Microsoft.

Rare nolonger makes good games, they only produce shovel ware like kinect sports because Microsoft said so.

  16. Thats the problem without third and first party support.
Its either get more third and first parties or make 3x as more ips then they are making now.
    Seriously.

  17. sooooo depressing!!! :'( i hate the recession!!! i blame corrupt bankers :'( i hope things dont get so bad that no one can afford wii u :'(

  18. best case scenario: nintendo would go through this like a boss.

mid-worst case scenario: nintendo stop’s making hardware and sticks to software as a third party company (like SEGA)

worst case scenario: nintendo leaves completely

my opinion: i doubt that the MAIN reason their losing is because of the 3DS. their was some thing in the news recently about the yen rising in value and that the euro will cause a 40 billion yen currency exchange loss. the earthquake that hit japan also hit nintendo hard too…. plus the Wii U is coming up so they have to get back on there feets.

    1. In my opinion, I think nintendo leaving completely is much better than them making games for the companies that got them in this place. But thats just my opinion obviously

      1. No no, I agree with you. If Nintendo were to die off, I think they should make one final game for each franchise they have. One last Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin, Metroid, Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Pokemon, Mother, Kirby, and Smash Bros to end such a beautiful era

  19. Does anyone remember how much money Nintendo used on the 64? I just remember it being a lot, so a lot of this may be from research + the rise in Yen VS Euro + Stock investors hate’n (I’m not downloading anymore games on my phone…well they sucked kind of anyways). I honestly think Nintendo will be fine, it’s not like the success of the Wii just disappeared and they’re suddenly just going to roll down hill.

I don’t know much about how the economies of other worlds don’t so I won’t act like I do, but you guys shouldn’t either, only if it’s like your freaking specialty or something.

  21. You know, it’s kind of hysterical how journalists and analysts are crapping their pants and saying that this is going to be inevitable doom for Nintendo. The truth is, it isn’t. They are just using scare tactics because Nintendo’s business practice is a lot different than others. They do not wish to end up like those who only care about short-term profits off of smartphone games. With something like this happening for the first time in 30 years, do you think it’ll happen again? If Nintendo manages to shatter our doubts by offering us more games that we want to play at a console or handheld’s launch, then no we won’t. However, if they squander on that promise, then that outcome will be shockingly so. Nintendo needs to take into account this information before they release the Wii U. They need to make sure there is a strong software lineup in order to sell their hardware at launch, then that is when they will be making money like hotcakes. Speaking of which, they need to make sure there is a 2.5D or 3D Mario game at launch because that is the only way the system will be able to become an instant seller because having a Mario game bundled with a system at launch is really great marketing. Plus, they need to stop putting us in the drought with Virtual Console games on their systems because it already seems that we are entering that phase with the 3DS, right now. It has been a heavy drought for the Wii since 2009, so why would they start on the 3DS, now?
