Nintendo 3DS: Super Mario 3D Land Will Have A Direct Influence On The Next Mario Game

During the latest Iwata Asks segment Nintendo President Satoru Iwata teamed up with Yoshiaki Koizumi and Takashi Tezuka to discuss Super Mario 3D Land. During the discussion the team revealed that Super Mario 3D Land will be the key in shaping the next Super Mario game for whatever platform it becomes available on.

Iwata: It is satisfying both as a showcase of all that’s good about 2D and 3D and as the grand sum of what you’ve done so far in 3D.
Koizumi: Yes. The fun contained in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine is scattered throughout, so it’s fun to look for those places. I think this game will be key in leading to the next Super Mario game—a new point of origin, or a crossroads.
Iwata: I see. Tezuka-san?
Tezuka: This game feels like a collaborative project with 2D Super Mario, so it introduces various devices and enemies from 2D Super Mario, as if to say, “This is how they look in 3D!” I feel like we are introducing something new to players of 2D Super Mario. I want to reflect what we gained from Super Mario 3D Land in the next 2D Super Mario game.

        1. My comment did not appear for 5 minuites so i had to comment seperately! Yesh i forgot to put my name in. I’m Airbuz.

                1. I’m not 6 years old!!!!!!!!!!

                  Think about it i’m mature, im not a kid.

                  Can people stop saying people are kids before everyone says that everyones 1 year old?

    1. A 2D title would be great!! I just imagine the same graphics but new worlds and powers ups, it would fit so well on DS *—*

    1. what do you mean with noooo?

      I actually prefer mario 64 and sunshine styles than galaxy and 3ds because 3ds looks like a failed try to make a half-galaxy game… I didn’t like the result, I prefer the delfino plaza style of phase… galaxy 2 fits very well with it’s style but the 3ds is not calling my attention… too bad =( I really hope that the wii u mario game to be like sunshine or 64, or even a galaxy 3 but not that galaxy that is not a galaxy style… let’s wait and see

      1. That’s what I meant. I personally think this is the worst Mario game of this generation. It looks like a sad attempt at mixing 2-D and 3-D.
        The galaxy games were the best Mario games ever made. Their atmosphere allowed for almost any play style, including ones like Sunshine or 64. So in my personal oppinion, they need to do Super Mario Galaxy 3 for Wii U and make it a triology. Then they should focus more on veteran players and not kids, which seems to be the problem with this game.

        1. This game isn’t even in the same category as galaxy sunshine or 64 it’s more in the category of super Mario bros nsmb etc.

        2. No! That is milking the galaxy series. it was great while it lasted, but now it is time to move on to something else. and why are some of you guys comparing a handheld game to a console game. You get two totally different experiences!

          1. It really isn’t the same experience… but I think we were talking about the next home console mario game… as I said: I hope they just come back with the 64 and sunshine style, but a galaxy 3 with perfect graphics would be the best thing ever too…

    1. I like Sunshine, but it had a very narrow atmosphere that only allowed a little bit of creativity and level variation. The galaxy games allow for practically anything they want to do, including Sunshine-type levels. I’d love the water spraying guy(what’s it called?) to be an item in a galaxy game. Imagine how it could work with gravity defying worlds!

    1. Soooo people complain when there’s not enough 3DS news/games, and now that we’re actually getting some, people still complain. Okay. Well. I’m going to bed

  1. THE KEYS TO SUCCESS FOR A MARIO GAME……..
    1- MAKE 3 MARIO GAMES FOR EACH SYSTEM
    * A MARIO GAME THAT IS 2D LIKE MARIO BROS WII ( 4 PLAYER )
    * A MARIO GAME THAT IS SIMILAR TO GALAXY/ 64 / 3D LAND
    * A NEW MARIO GAME THAT IS FAR FROM THE BASIC 2D/3D PLAT-FORMER ( LUGUI’S MANSION/ SUNSHINE

    PLEASE TAKE THIS UNDER CONSIDERATION

  3. My idea for Mario success on the 3DS is:
    2.5D game (SM3DL)
    Full-fledged 3D game a la Galaxy/64
    Amazing 2D game a la SMB/SMW/NSMBWii

    The same goes for other platforms, except that instead of a 2.5D game which is probably only good for handhelds like 3D should be replaced with another 3D game a la Galaxy 2.

  5. I think when Tezuka is referring to the next 2D Mario game, he’s referring to games such as NSMB Wii, not games like Galaxy.
