Nintendo 3DS: Mario Kart 3DS Was Completed As An “Act Of Emergency”, Retro Studios Were Roped In

Nintendo has admitted that Mario Kart 7 was completed as “an act of emergency” in an effort to get it out in time for the holiday season. Nintendo were so determined to get the game out this year that they enlisted the help of Metroid developer Retro Studios to make sure Mario Kart 7 was finished this year. Retro concentrated on redoing the classic courses while Nintendo concentrated on creating the new courses.

      1. MK7 needs Birdo, Bower Jr./Koopalings, Diddy Kong, Waluigi, Baby Mario & Luigi, Boo, R.O.B., Dry Bones, and even Funky Kong.

        1. theres always DLC. hopefully they will release a pack including at least 4 of those characters.
and why is that brown gravatar profile so common on the site?

          1. I don’t think Nintendo will go with DLC for characters. From one of the previous articles in this site, Reggie mentioned that they won’t use DLC that way, they believe in giving their customers what they want which is a “complete” game . So whatever characters the game have, that’s probably what we’re going to get. DLC tracks however, that’s something different.

            1. And from a previous article they also mentioned how they could had released Skyward Last year but decided not to to make it better.

Which is the exact opposite of what is happening with this Mario Kart.
              So anything is possible.

              1. I think DLC for tracks is way more unlikely. Every Mario Kart game has 8 cups so having another one is uncommon. Plus the whole menu where you choose the cup would be weird if there were 9. The addition of 4 characters is WAY more easier. Reggie wanted the game to complete but they didn’t have enough time, so completing the game with a new pack of characters will probably happen.

    1. They just pumped millions into R&D and I think they have enough 1st and 2nd party developmentteams as it is, you have to take into account that they are juggeling 4 systems right now with one in launch preperation…

      1. To make my point, these are Nintendo’s current developmentteams:

        First-party studios
EAD Comprehensive Group –Super Mario 64 DS, Star Fox 64 3D,

Nintendo NSD – Personal Trainer: Walking,

Nintendo Software Technology – Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Crosswords DS, Metroid Prime Hunters[41]
Monolith Soft – Disaster: Day of Crisis, Xenoblade[42]
Retro Studios – Metroid Prime series, Donkey Kong Country Returns[43]

Project Sora – Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kid Icarus Uprising
        Nd Cube – Wii Party
HAL Laboratory – Kirby series, Mother series, Super Smash Bros series,
        [edit]Second-party studios
Since the 1980s, Nintendo has built up a large group of second-party partners, through publishing agreements or collaboration.
AlphaDream – Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
Ambrella – Pokémon Dash, Pokémon Rumble, Pokémon Channel, My Pokémon Ranch,[45]

seems like enough for one company to me….

          1. RareWare? If you refer to Rare as in the developer of GoldenEye, BanjoKazooie etc, Rare Ltd is since 2002 a subsidiary of Microsoft Game Studios.

    1. I really hope they try their hand at a new IP, if they can handle bringing metroid into 3D and Donkey kong back on the wii, now is the time to give them some creative freedom!

  2. Uh oh….why does that make me worried?

Oh yeah, because several companies have done this with games in the past and it’s come back to bite them.

  3. So we have Retro helping out which is good. Nintendo recognise how good they are. Not only to work on a couple of their IPs but also to work with on a game like Mario Kart.

Also, even though it’s being rushed, I personally am not worried since they also supposedly rushed Mario Sunshine and I liked that.

  5. Well, Ocarina of Time was basically a complete mess during development. Kakariko Village wasn’t even an idea when they decided to have that town, and look how it turned out; two of the temples had to be accessed through that village. This can only mean the game will be awesome.

  6. I hope this doesn’t mean that nintendo cut corners. It would be a real shame if this game isn’t as great as it could be.

  7. Since when has Retro ever let Nintendo down? They made the Prime games amazing, DKCR was again another success, so I have no doubt that they’ve made the classic tracks awesome.

  8. They need (let me supersize the NEED) to make a 3D donkey kong country game!!!
Fun Fact: Donkey Kong Country 1 on the GBA was my first game ever. I loved it. Completed the other 3 too. King of swing, 64. All that. Make a 3DS game!!!

  10. Wow, that’s a lot more involvement in Mario Kart 7 than I thought Retro ever had. But I don’t see the reason to panic, Retro are a great company and it seems like they’ve done a better job (especially with the retro tracks) than Nintendo themselves ever would have.

  11. i’d make a comment asking from Xenoblade, but i have decided against it.

still, it would give them a bit of cash (although from what i’m hearing here, not remotely enough) they need to pump out a bunch of good Wii, DS, and 3DS games pronto, games that aren’t targeted at casuals or at least not completely.
