The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has received many spectacular review scores from numerous publications. Is this really Link’s greatest adventure yet? Read on to find out.
How did you find the motion controls?
I must admit that initially it came as a bit of a shock to play a game that was pretty much entirely dependant on motion control as I had previously been playing games that relied solely upon a traditional analogue controller. I must confess though that after about an hour I was converted to Nintendo’s vision that motion control is the most enjoyable and entertaining way to play a Zelda title. Yes, it may take a short time to get used to the controls, but I have to say that if you are having trouble managing them then that’s not a problem with the game, but with you.
How impressive are the visuals?
When Skyward Sword was first revealed to the public at E3 I was admittedly slightly disappointed. I was one of those that would have liked to have seen a more gritty and darker side to the Zelda franchise, however, after actually playing the game on Wii I’m confident that Nintendo made the right decision with the art direction in the game. Sure, it’s all rather colourful and cartoony but it really compliments the aging hardware on which it’s been built. This is the best looking game on Wii and I don’t think anyone who has played it could refute that claim.
Is this the best Zelda yet?
The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is an ambitious game. It’s the first title to really build upon Wii MotionPlus and deliver exactly what Nintendo promised the Wii was all about. It’s taken a while but the wait was more than worth it as The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword is truly a spectacular title full of memorable characters, exciting locations and a unique control scheme that really does put your skills to the test. Could we have asked for a better Zelda game for Wii? I honestly don’t think we could. Is it the best Zelda game ever? Quite possibly.
9.5/10
This is a masterful game. I’m already at Lake Floria
“if you are having trouble managing them then that’s not a problem with the game, but with you.” that’s for Tom Mcshea at gamespot

Lol
I will buy this game after the hoildays, and any more news about the free 10 GBA games due for us ambassdors as the year is running out? (just 4 more weekends left, one of them is Christmas weekend)
In places, it looks beautiful; Eldin Volcano for example.
It’s not the best looking Wii game, though. Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 are.
Nope. false again. Okami looks better.
Agree with you SO much
Okami looks terrible on Wii. The art style is cool but the polygon count is low, textures are terrible, and the ghosting is atrocious. Maybe on a standard TV it looks better, but on an HDTV it’s really hard to look at.
No offense to the game though, don’t get me wrong, I love Okami. Rory might be right, though, Super Mario Galaxy was really on par with most 360 games as far as graphical appeal, if it weren’t for the Wii’s resolution. Skyward Sword is close, but there are a few areas that you just wouldn’t see so vaguely detailed in SMG.
Lol now thats a game/animator comment :L Sorry I just find it funny as I’m in my first year of 3D computer animation. I’m sorry but I haven’t played okami on the wii. The trailers make it look quite beautiful. It’s not low polygon count it’s the art style of the game. I’m sorry but with games graphics isn’t everything. They might have done it to help with the rendering I don’t know.
WTF
I think twilight princess is the best looking imo
Have you seen all the jaggies, or are you talking about the art-style.
Okami’s art style is admittedly glorious, but from a technical standpoint, it doesn’t get anywhere near either SMG or Zelda.
No. It’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption!
Metroid Prime 3 is really a marvel to behold! I will definitly agree with that, but I think SMG 2 was pretty much on par. The thing with Skyward Sword is that is has large levels with more scope and colours and objects etc, so the graphics take a hit, which they then tuned down a tad so that there is no lag :)
All in all, Zelda = AWESOME! Been playing it all weekend :P
Though not *really* a Wii game, I think Resident Evil 4 looks better. All four games are very close, though!
So may I ask why is it 9.5 instead of 10? What made it lose .5?
For me a game has to be absolutely perfect for it to score a 10. Whilst it was close to perfect I didn’t feel that it deserved a 10. 9.5 was the score I felt comfortable giving it.
sickr i trust your judgement and i can agree that it is more dignified to give it 9.5 but come onnnnnn
the IGNorant people on earth gave it a 10
and Edge magazine the most famous reviewers as well
so whats wrong wid you giving it a 10?
I feel giving it a 10 would mean there’s no room for improvement. I haven’t played Skyward Sword, but I’m sure there are things that could be improved, even slightly.
And I think this is true for any game.
You haven’t played it though……soooooooo kind of a moot point
He’s right though. In my eyes giving it a ten would mean that it’s perfect with absolutely no room for improvement. I didn’t personally feel that it was a flawless game. I would be lying to myself and you if I just gave it a ten because everyone else has. 9.5 is what I decided to gave the game and I’m happy with that score, you should be too.
alright i get your point
but then why would IGN Edge GameInformer blah blah give it a 10?
Because IGN and GameInformer have a different grading system.
Don’t look at scores out of context. It only really means something when you compare them to other scores the SAME magazine has given. IGN gives 10s much easier than other magazines, and so does Gameinformer.
The Edge usually rarely awards 10s, so reading their review made me feel like really, Skyward Sword is a near-perfect game. Having played it myself, but not finished, I think it might be much better than Oot, but I’ll have to finish first to judge completely.
Agreed.
i dont know, i am almost finished with the game and i really cant say i see any way to improve on this game, its that perfect to me. ive never been this addicted to a zelda game. may soon become my favorite game ever.
I agree with this review :)
Even if I’ll have to play it some more to decide whether it’s the best Zelda game ever…it’s not a problem of Skyward Sword, but just that there are so many great Zelda games it’s often hard to tell which one is best
I have to admit, I personally really don’t enjoy the motion controls. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a problem with me nor with the game. It’s not necessarily a problem at all. It’s simply a preference for some people to want to play games the classic way, and for me, the reason for that is because 1) I have always played games with analog controllers (being that I grew up a 90s kid) and 2)… well, it seriously hurts my arms and wrists because I have VERY weak arms and wrists. I just wish we could have the option to play with classic control or with wii motion control, because one is absolutely NOT better than the other. It just so happens that some people prefer one to the other, and there is nothing wrong with that.
^This.
Sounds like a skinny teen too lazy to get up to play
Sorry that being 24 and running 3 miles every other day tires my body out.
Do you run with your wrists or something?
^he does a hand stand when he runs…lol
running involves your arms. and so does playing skyward sword to a large degree… but still…. its not that bad….
So, you having “VERY weak arms and wrists” doesn’t fall in the “that’s not a problem with the game, but with you” category?
Who ever said that was a problem? Apparently you missed the point of what I read and jumped to the very first thing you could attack.
My preference is classical control. I don’t hate wii motion control, I just don’t prefer it over classical control. Neither is better than the other. Why would you want to say that one is? If other people like motion control, thats fine, but be considerate of those that don’t like it.
Yunno, you don’t have to swing that hard. It actually works better with slower, more graceful movements.
LOL! Ya i know xD
Well, let me ask you this. How would it have been possible to make completely accurate sword strikes and the like with a regular controller? I don’t see it as being possible without screwing it up.
Maybe some people don’t care about making super-accurate sword strikes? I was able to enjoy OoT without that.
but the entire game is built around that aspect. All opponents have some kind of Motion Control trick to them
Looks more like a Q&A
I beat the game, and honestly I have to agree with the 9.5. From all the reviews, I was expecting a lot more, but it’s still a fantastic game, however it seemed a little easy…
Bought it on Sunday and am still playing it. Beat the third dungeon (slow right?) and it is awesome! That fight with the Fire dungeon boss had me going!
Hey, I haven’t even started the 2nd dungeon yet and I got on Sunday, too. For some reason I didn’t have the bundle on reserve >:(
I like the motion controls, though i would have like it better if when you use the cursor (like the dousing) that you can use the pointer instead of just the motion controls, but other the that, the game is great.
I really enjoyed it. There were parts that really got the heart racing. Such as, and I’ll try to be vague in a way only those who’ve got that far will know, the bits with the tears.
I just got done with the second of such segments, and I have to say those are the most intense moments of the game. The stamina meter running out is SO nerve-wracking. xD
Not to say some bosses aren’t intense.
I play it normal and hero mode complete 100% and all I have to say is:
Skyward Sword for me is a game 10/10
“Best looking game on Wii” is easily debatable.
SMG1/2, MH3. Red Steel 2, Madworld, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, DKCR, Sonic Colors, TvC, Rayman Origins,Conduit 1/2, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Other M, and Skyward Sword all look great.
Skyward Sword’s Art style is unique, but it comes down to preference.
And I can’t say I agree with the 9.5; you didn’t list any negatives about the game. I’m pretty sure something has to be wrong with the game to justify taking off points. (No matter how small they may be.)
Agreed. He should’ve said at least a negative point.
I agree. The problem with pointing out ANYTHING negative that one feels about the game is that trollers and flamers will eat you up like candy. Apparently fanboys can’t tolerate anyone saying ONE negative thing about the game =_=
I’m quite certain he meant “best looking” to mean highest poly-count and texture res. Which is what is typically judged when comparing games graphically. Super Mario Galaxy is slightly better in my opinion, MH3 has many moments where the texture quality dips, I can’t speak for RS2 or Madworld, Kirby’s Epic Yarn does not have 3D polygonal models and therefore shouldn’t be in the same comparison, DKCR feels just average, Sonic Colors is actually up there, Don’t know about TvC or Rayman, The Conduit would be a good contender if it didn’t have random polygonal and color ghosting issues, Metroid Prime 3 is up there, Other M isn’t quite on par with high res textures, and skyward sword is right under SMG like I said.
Again, my opinion, but that’s what I’d say from my experience
True as this may be, he did say “best looking game,” which doesn’t limit itself to texture res or poly-count. It simply comes down what’s most visually appealing, which is entirely up to preference.
I understand it’s his opinion, but he went on to say, ” I don’t think anyone who has played it could refute that claim.”
I’m just simply stating that it’s a debatable statement and not a fact.
There doesn’t need to be anything negative for it to be not a 10. It might just not have overwhelmed him enough to be a complete 10
Everyone will be mad at me, but I don’t think it deserves a 10 =/
First of all, I would like to say that I’m a HUGE Zelda fan, I cleared every single game over and over again, and I’d like to say Skyward was a great game. In the first 5 hours of the game, I was thinking it was the best Zelda game ever made, full of action and puzzles even outside dungeons. The story was perfect and it had it all. But the more I played, more I realized that the game is too repetitive, and I really mean it. The game itself have only 4 different areas, and they force you to keep going on the same places and doing basically the same stuff over and over again, and that wasn’t that cool. Another thing I would like to say is that the game is really easy, but let’s not discuss about that, because this game was ment to be a familly game, that anyone could play. Another issue is that they shoudn’t put motion controlls on everything, like, we could use the sensor bar to point at the screen at least, not needing to center it all the time.
In overall, the game is good, but not perfect. We have to stop thinking that only because it is a Zelda game, it have to be perfect.
I think it deserves a 7,5/10 (sorry about that guys)
I agree, I cant stand re centering the remote especially when attempting the pumkin shooting challenge i have to recenter about 3-4 times each attempt.
Again I may be wrong but I think every review I’ve seen has been either a 9 or a 9.5 .
Apart from the crappy Gamespot and 1up reviews, I think it has gotten above 90% in all reviews.
Oh I messed up that comment. I meant reviews on this website not Skyward Sword reviews.
No talk about the excessive amount of padding and the bland overworld?
padding? where? I honestly don’t see it?
Also, by overworld you mean the Sky? It’s bland at first but the more of the blocks you unlock, the more stuff is in it, and it will feel much more alive
First!
VERY late…
yeah
I’ve played it and personally, I have to say that it is not the best looking game on the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were absolutely amazing and impressive, in all aspects and although most people were disappointed by SSBB, graphically, it is superb. But that’s just my opinion.
To be very slightly critial on the game, it annoying me how I cannot Z-target enemies with long-range weapons (sling shot, bow and arrows, hookshot, etc) and the game auto-follows them like in the previous 3D Zeldas. It makes killing flying enemies more annoying to kill. Apart from that, the game is amazing, and I’m on my way to the 6th temple with 34 hours in-tow :)
*and the game doesn’t auto-follow them*
Yes, you’re right, that’s a big problem, I noticed that too. When trying to kill a bat, when i actually ended up losing half my health -.-
lol JUST USE YOUR SWORD. if theyre that close to be able to take that much health just hit it with your sword lol.
Although there are a few things like auto lock-on that were passed over, Skyward Sword is still a fantastic game.
Great review! Can’t wait for my copy to arrive next week!
Sounds like everybody is enjoying the game. Good.
I’ve played it all the way through and am going through it again on Hero Mode. There were a couple of things here and there that I wish they had done more with, however, I would still give it a perfect score. Seeing as how every game has room for improvement, this one has very little to improve on. I can honestly say it’s the best game I’ve played all year. (And I never had a single issue with the controls, they were fantastic)
All year? How about your whole life, how would it rate? 1st, 2nd 3rd, etc.?
It’s definitely up there. I just used this year because a lot of fantastic games came out this year. Not sure if I could give it a set rating, however.
I haven’t got my copy yet, but it sounds great! I’m just glad the comments didn’t have any spoilers lol
Very, very good game! Intense moments and great gameplay! Yes, I wish we could Z-Target enemies and shoot em and you do visit the same places over and over but it feels fresh to me because of new enemies and places to explore. Very, very, very good game
^That
I meant to respond to Mischa.
The motion controls are slightly annoying when pointing at the screen, I think they should have left the menu type screens as sensor bar controlled…
Playing on hero mode now :):)
